Horizons Community High School: Preserve the Program

1.        Wyoming Public Schools will not renew the charter of Horizons Community High School.

2.        Wyoming Public Schools plans on creating a new alternative high school program.

3.        Wyoming Public Schools does not have the knowledge, administrative staff with successful alternative high school experience or expertise required to create a successful program.

4.        The staff of Horizons Public High School has been a recognized, national leader in alternative education.

5.        The State of Michigan spent c. $200,000 in school improvement funds on Horizons Community High School during the 2007-2008 school year.

6.        Alternative education students in Wyoming deserve a proven program, a program that has been successful for more than 1,000 young people over 30 years.

We demand that the new alternative program being created by Wyoming Public Schools be patterned after the Horizons Community High School program, be headed by Horizons; current director, Teriena Schwartz, be staffed by Horizons Community High School%u2019s current staff and remain accessible by all of Horizons Community High School%u2019s current students and be named New Horizons Alternative High School.
