Hudbay Minerals is a Canadian mining company operating in Guatemala.This company hired a security group to evict Mayan families from their homes in Lote Ocho and La Union, Guatemala. This group is well known for their brutality and violent tactics and they lived up to their reputation when they brutally raped eleven women, killed the leader of the community and left a man paralyzed. They left their mark by burning these abused people's homes and community to the ground.
Such actions are atrocious and this group and the company who hired them have completely crossed the line in every way. Companies like Hudbay Minerals get away with such acts because they are not held responsible and this must change.
Tell the Canadian government that they must not allow Canadian companies to get away with murder. Tell the Guatemalan government that they must hold those responsible for such atrocities as they must tell the world and their companies that such actions will not be tolerated.
Urge them to do whatever they can to make sure that this brutal atrocity never happens again!
We the undersigned sincerely urge the Canadian and Guatemalan governments to hold Hudbay Minerals responsible for the atrocities and crimes committed by their security forces in Lote Ocho and La Union, Guatemala. This includes the rape of eleven women, the murder of the community leader and the paralysis of a young man. They should also be held accountable for burning these poor people’s homes to the ground. Such actions are despicable and are a complete embarrassment for both governments. Hudbay Minerals represents Canada when they conduct business internationally and the Canadian government should be completely embarrassed and ashamed of what this company has authorized and done. The Guatemalan government must not allow this type of conduct to happen and must hold these multi-national corporations responsible for their crimes.
We urge you to fight for justice and accountability by making sure that this never happens again and those responsible for these atrocities are given consequences for their crimes.
