Holding nursing homes acct. for neglect issues

Target:
Nursing Homes throughout Indiana
Sponsored by:
Hello my name is Sandy Slaven and I am here to hopefully shed light on nursing homes and neglect issues. At the age of 40 I am without both parents. They both passed away in nursing homes. They both despite my most fervent efforts suffered from neglect. I will share their stories briefly my mother was a victim of alzheimer's disease and eventually had a stroke which left her completely dependent on others for her care. I kept her home with me for as long as I could and then I had no choice but to place her in a nursing home. I visited her every single day and was very vocal in stressing how important her care was because the stroke had left her unable to speak. Again despite my efforts she eventually developed a bedsore which one could have placed their fist into. The staff at the nursing home stressed that she had developed a raging infection when I insisted she be transported to the hospital one of the physicians explained her bedsore was as the staff stated due to an infection an infection that had further been aggravated by the fact that she had indeed not been repositioned every 2 hrs. which she desperately needed and should have been. At the age of 80 in 2006 my mother underwent 2 surgeries to repair this wound.  She lasted another 6 months and then I had to bury her. My father also had alzheimer's and unfortunately also needed nursing home care but because he wandered and was considered a liability he was placed in a somewhat substandard nursing home. I fought to get him out but was unsuccessful and I eventually lost dad just 8 months after mom. My story is not unique there are families worldwide who are enduring the same nightmare, their cases different but many times sadly their outcomes are the same. Please do your part to send a message to our lawmakers stating that we will not tolerate nursing home neglect any longer, the life you save may be your mom, dad, your grandparents, sibling, children or even yourself. Please help us make a difference by signing our petition today! Thank you for your time!
