A day at Hoopland

Save Brooklyn Hoops/ Hoopland

Target:
Brooklyn City Council Members

For the past decade, Brooklyn Hoops, which is also known as Hoopland, has been a beacon of hope to the residents of Brooklyn, NY.Unfortunately, January 1st, 2009 marks the day that this beacon's doors will be closed forever. This facility is home to thousands of Brooklynites seeking an alternative to crime filled streets and non-constructive options that plague our children's day to day reality. Through the doors of Brooklyn Hoops, you will see multiple activities that are provided not only to athletes, but also to general youth with other interest i.e. karate, music, dance, Lacrosse and scheduled academic tutoring. These support systems are the building blocks for youth that want to bring change into their lives; hence, assisting athletes seeking scholarships, molding minds to accept the importance of school, church and family. In sum, there is no available facility within our immediate community large enough to accommodate the multiple interest of our local churches, schools, specialized youth programs and families. Consequently, The most disturbing question remains: "Where are all these people going to go?"

We, the undersigned, are appalled at the thought of losing this treasure in our community, demanding that our elected officials hear our cry and help us "Save Hoopland!"

Hoopland should come back because all my brother does is sell drugs and smoke weed. He is very talented but does not have any where else to go besides the drug filled parks. Hoopland would give a good state of mind and constructive criticism towards a better life.

Hooplan is where i go to do my work outs and is a great karate center for my child.

I am a brown belt with a black tip, i do karate there. Hopplan in the back is a great area for me and my child to work out in our different ways, and also for my friends and i to play basket ball.

I encourage any enterprise that caters to the youth especially the under privileged in society. This gym is needed especially now that we are seeing a world recession looming. We need to maintain an outlet for the youth in these times to prevent them from being sucked into the dregs of society.

My son and his friends play at Hoopland facility for recreation and to keep away from the trouble streets. I would appreciate it if this facility will be re-opened and not just sold to some big conglomerate.

please keep this place open...it gives young children a productive alternative, rather than run the streets and do nonsense, closing this place is going to hurt a lot of people and i know there are a lot of people that love hoopland and want it to stay open, but i fear that it will be closed anyway because people will not sign this petition and take it seriously...

i remember going to hoopland on Wed and Fri to practice with coach Dre ...to work on my game...he taught me a lot, and it kept me out the park where i would have been playing with some not so good people...

Hoopland has been a home to many young kids and basketball players in Brooklyn. To shut hoopland down would be like shutting some of these kids dreams down, and without dreams their is no life.

Growing up in Brooklyn, I know the importance of having an outlet for the youth. There is just too much opportunity for trouble to get in to. I've moved out to NJ and have been there for several years but continue to come back to Brooklyn's Hoopland to play ball with friends that I've grown up with as well as establish new friendships with other "Hooplanders". I see the various teams practicing and the various age groups and think about the impact it is having on them as I didn’t have or at least know about things of this nature when I was there. I feel like it is necessary to have this gym or a similar sized facility to accommodate the community that is more importantly AFFORDABLE. The impact it's made in the area and surrounding areas is just too obvious. Definite negative results if it is completely removed and not replaced in the immediate area.

Hoopland is a place that I have been fortunate to have known about since I was ten and I've always been in there any time I could. It is a place that signifies unity and brotherhood between people.

My most intense basketball battles have occured here and it also provided a place for me to practice. Those warm days of summer when everyone is outside, this is where I was, alone but still getting better.

As a resident of the neighborhood, I have attended programs at Brooklyn Hoops. It was an important part of my teenage life and it would be a travesty to see this pillar of hope taken away from our youth.

I have been going to Hoopland for years when I was in college. My brothers have been attending right after me when they started H.S. Hoopland has been a safe place to go and have something recreational to do in the neighborhood. There aren't too many places for teenagers to young adults to do in the area these days and Hoopland has provided that outlet for all of us in the past until now.

please share your unique stories about hoopland

Hoopland, or BAC has been my home since i was 6. I am now 17. The closing of this facility poses a problem for a non for profit program that has been here for years on end. I am optmistic that we will find another place but my feelings toward this situation remain negative... I really do wish it weren't so.

I'm not sure which stories to share because most are "inside" stories about the karate program, but I've been here since the 90's when hoopland was non existent and in place stood the racquetball courts. I watched this place change and fill to capacity with people on the weekends and special occasions. I'll miss it alot.

hoopland is important because it gives young men and women something to do other than hang out in the streets. It also gives kids a place to work out and stay in good physical shape

My name is chad brown and i have been attending hoopland for the past 10 years hoopland is one of the only gyms in brooklyn that kids have to come and compete and work out with each other for a low costing price and a safe enviroment. By closing hoopland alot of kids in the neighborhood will have no where to go and i strongly believe it will increase violence in the area hoop land gives people a place to go to bond with each other and make new friendships. closing hoopland will be a dramatic lost to the community, better yet brooklyn nyc because hoopland is the most popular gym around it is like a basketball monument in Brooklyn we can not afford to lose one of brooklyns treasure. So plz can u deeply consider ya thought to take this haven away from kids and adults all alike.....???????????

HOOPLAND IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE FOR ALL YOUNG MEN TO SHARE THEIR TALENTS. IT WOULD A BE A GREAT LOST TO THE COMMUNITY AND WELL AS THE BOROUGH OF BROOKLYN. HOOPLAND KEEPS THE YOUNG & OLD MEN OCCUPIED, AND OUT OF TROUBLE. PLEASE SAVE THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

There is no other place like this in the entire city. Pick-up basketball is of cultural significance to the city of New York and Brooklyn in particular. More and more gyms have decided to close its doors to basketball, one of the greatest sports ever invented. Why? Where is the youth supposed to go? Who is taking care of the community?

My entire family has been going to Hoopland for a few years now. We love playing ball together, meeting people, and share our love for the game of basketball. While our son has been working out with various trainers, we have had a chance to improve our skills and have a great time. THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE THIS

I've been coming to hoopland for years and it would be a tremendous loss if you closed it down. I've encouraged so many ppl to come down there as well and they love it. So, it would be greatly appreciated if you didn't shut hoopland down!

I am currently a member of the United States Navy. I have been coming to hoopland for over 7 years. Hoopland provides a safe haven for young people. It takes them off the streets. Its a positive alternative to dealing drugs and a life of crime. This is a disaster that hoopland doors will shut. Hoopland has given me some structure in my life and I believe that it has done the same for others. The felowship in the place is unbelievable. I fear to think where all these people will go now. Keep her doors open, for the kids sake.
