We are petitioning Stafford County, VA to modify current livestock and health regulations so residents with less than 3 acres can keep up to 4 hens on their property. Cities around the nation allow for this, and if specific guidelines are put in place, we feel this green initiative will benefit our families and community. Chickens reduce nuisance insects such as mosquitos and ticks, they eat compost material, and they provide organic fertilizer while being productive and easy pets to care for. Suggested guidelines for "city chickens" are as follows: up to 4 hens can be kept, no roosters, no backyard butchering, and chickens must be housed at least 25 feet from neighboring residential homes. If you support our cause, please join us by signing.

We the undersigned are petitioning Stafford County, VA to amend current statutes which prohibit homeowners with less than 3 acres from raising hens. Hens not only provide families with healthy eggs, they are wonderful pets that are environmentally beneficial. Keeping nuisance insects such as moquitos, ticks, and grubs at bay without harmful insecticides is one desirable trait, plus they provide natural fertilizer for the yard, which is more environmentally friendly than commercial fertilizers. Hens consume compost material reducing landfill waste, and they can often go unnoticed by neighbors because they can be confined easily and are relatively quiet. Cities all over the nation are allowing "backyard chickens", and we are asking Stafford County to be among them.
Thank you for thoughtfully considering this request. We appreciate your time.
We signed the "Keeping Chickens in Stafford County, VA" petition!

Please consider changing the ruling to allow chickens in suburban backyards of Stafford County. This benefits families and our community in multiple ways and allows families to become a little bit more self-sufficient. Thank you!

In consideration of the residents and the viable regulations imposed, I believe this would be a positive move for Stafford County. The benefits are great with pest control and families tending to their specific needs.

This would help cut down on battery caged hens. People could have their own eggs much healthier for all ! Less hens would have to suffer the unbearable cruelty of caged or wharehouse life!

With the state of the economy, I believe everyone should be striving for a life where they are less dependent on grocery stores for their food. If kept properly, chickens are quieter and less obtrusive than most dogs.

This is a great initiative given the current economy and push to encourage victory gardens and less dependence on others for produce. Please allow Stafford residents to participate in current efforts to be more self-dependent.
Thank you.

Yes, I argree! you should be allowed to keep the chickens as pets! it's good for you and it means the chickens aren't cooped up in a tiny cage!
