Ask Your U.S. Representative to Become a Co-Sponsor of H.R. 1417, the BEST Practices Act

Please take a minute to let your member of Congress know that you support the BEST Practices Act and ask him or her to become a co-sponsor of the bill. We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging. Here are some talking points:

  • Please sign on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 1417, a bill that will improve military medical training by replacing the outdated use of animals.
  • The Department of Defense kills more than 6,000 goats and pigs every year in combat trauma training courses.
  • This practice continues despite the availability of superior human-based methods.
  • A transition to only human-based methods will provide a better educational experience for military medical trainees, as well as a cost-savings for U.S. taxpayers.
  • Contact Congressman Bob Filner%u2019s office to sign on.

Dear [Decision Maker],

* Please personalize your message I am writing to ask that you sign on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 1417, the BEST Practices Act, a bill that will improve military medical training by phasing out the use of live pigs and goats in combat trauma training courses. In these courses, trainees practice live-saving procedures on anesthetized pigs and goats, and at the end of each course, the animals are euthanized. This practice, suboptimal due to the vast anatomical differences between these animals and humans, continues despite the availability of superior, nonanimal methods, such as high-fidelity medical simulation. The BEST Practices Act contains a three-year timeline for the development and validation of the human-based technology, most of which is currently available, and a two-year timeline for its implementation. This timeline is based on the findings outlined in a 2009 DoD report that states that methods of replacing live tissue training for all "high volume/high value" procedures should be available by 2014. Veterans organizations are endorsing the efforts outlined in this bill. The Uniformed Services Disabled Retirees, the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA), and the African-American Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Association have all signed letters of support. Please contact Congressman Bob Filner's office to add your name as a co-sponsor of H.R. 1417, the BEST Practices Act today in order to provide a better educational experience for our troops, a cost-savings for American taxpayers, and an end to the suffering of thousands of animals.

If you believe, as I do that other methods can be utilized for teaching practices, please sign this petition.  Alleviate animal suffering with a BEST PRACTICES ACT. Please urge your U.S Representative to co-sponsor this bill.
