The efficacy of the flu vaccine(s) have been questioned for years. Cochrane reviews from 2006-2010 have all found moderate to almost no effectiveness in all age groups. Recently, researchers at the University of Minnesota found a 59% pooled effectiveness of the influenza vaccine in over two dozen studies. This study was featured on ABC as being a large shock to the belief that the flu vaccine guarantees prevention against the flu.
There is plenty of scientific research however pointing to the fact that vitamin D prevents against flu (PMID: 20219962), green tea is helpful against the flu (PMID: 21832305), and psychological stress is not helpful agains the flu (PMID: 10204970). Herbal medicine has approaches that are also based on evidence; Elderberries, a common folklore medicine against the flu, has been shown to inhibit many strains of the influenza virus (PMID: 9395631).
