Extreme poverty forces over 300,000 children in Haiti into child slavery as domestic servants. Access to schools and long-term economic options are keys to freedom.

I Want to End Child Slavery in Haiti

Target:
The Governments of Haiti and the U.S.
Sponsored by:

More than 200 years ago, in 1804 Haiti became the first nation in the world founded on the abolishment of slavery. Unfortunately extreme poverty and inequality forces over 300,000 children to live today enslaved as domestic servants.

Just an hour and a half from Disney World, tens of thousands of children lose their labor, their childhoods and their sense of humanity, toiling day and night as domestic slaves, as restavčks.

Democracy and development cannot advance alongside subjugation and servitude.  In keeping with the greatness of its victorious beginnings, Haiti must recommit to the abolishment of slavery.  It is time for Haiti and its supporters to take all measures necessary to ensure that every child in Haiti attends primary school and is exempt from domestic bondage.  It can be done.  Now is the time to do it.

      • Yes! I want all children in Haiti to live and grow in freedom and dignity!
      • I stand in solidarity with efforts to eliminate the root causes of child slavery in Haiti.
      • Haitian parents must have the means available to them to care for their children, including food, clean water, shelter, and health care.
      • I call on Haiti's leaders to fulfill its obligations to provide free primary education for all children in Haiti.
      • I urge Haiti's allies, in particular the United States, to support community efforts to end child slavery in Haiti.

      Dear friend,

Sometime in December 2008, we collected 1088 signatures in support of our campaign to end child slavery in Haiti. Thanks to your endorsement, we will take on the nest step, which is to deliver the petition to the American and Haitian governments. While President Barack Obama has quite a lot on his plate as he begins to take the first halting steps towards economic recovery in the US and improved relations with the rest of the world, we must insist that the US do its part to promote a better future for the most vulnerable of Haitian children and in so doing recalibrate US aid so that it addresses the root causes rather than the symptoms of socio-economic failure in Haiti.

To keep abreast of developments with the campaign, please keep in touch with Jocelyn McCalla through jmccalla@jmcstrategies.com.

Thank you again for your contribution to the campaign to eliminate child slavery in Haiti.

Children are truly the future. They should be protected and loved. When children are placed in loving homes and environments, they thrive and quickly develop better self-esteem and happiness. Children should not be subjected to cruelty, humiliation, and abuse. Once subjected to such mistreatment, they grow up to become abusers as well.

The end of child slavery in Haiti is a complete end of ignorance, illiteracy, coup d'etat, and corruption. This is a long fight, which needs brave men and women who can reshape the destiny of Haiti. Merryl Simon: simsim39@hotmail.com, Phone: 786-318-8731

It is unfortunate after all this years, we can keep this in our community we need to fight for our children now. There is no more time to waste, because the children are the future.

I think that it's about time that we end child slavery in Haiti. Every child deserves a chance to grow in a healthy environment. Please do the right thing.

I have signed this petition to support this positive action. But unless the legislator gets involved making child abuse a felony of the first degree in Haiti, this movement will remain pure fantaisy. Thank You.

it's ashame how they are treating these kids and I'm very upset and can't imagine my kids being treated like that and if they don't want the kids I don't have a lot but I will damn sure take them in with no questions asked and love care and nuture them into being strong individuals that will stand tall and be dignified...and you wonder why Haiti is in the condition that it's in keep treating these kids the way that you are a God is really gonna lay his raft down on them keep it up you'll see.

The abolition of restivek is one step toward fulfilling the promise of Haiti as an independent, humane country, where the human rights of its citizens, particularly the vulnerable--the children, elderly, and poor--will be protected and supported.
