No Fish Farms In Broad Bay

No Fish Farms In Broad Bay

Target:
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar & Scottish Government
Sponsored by:

The campaign to stop Lighthouse Caledonia Ltd's proposed fish farm in Broad Bay (Loch a'Tuath), is underway. (http://nofishfarmsinbroadbay.wordpress.com/)
At the end of October 2009, Lighthouse Caledonia Ltd (reg. office: Cairndow, ARGYLL PA26 8BH) lodged a planning application (ref: 09/00557/FFSCSC ) with CNES to develop a 'previously unused' marine site at Sron Alla Tolan, approx 1 mile off of the north shores of Gress beach. The application is now pending an environmental impact assessment, and the time is fast approaching when Lighthouse Caledonia and the planning authorities hear our opposition to this plan.
Anyone concerned about the marine, estuary and coastal environment of Broad Bay and the Isle of Lewis, and the local economy, should oppose this plan.
Why? Because the proposed fish farm will destroy the marine, coastal and estuary environments of this beautiful area; threaten the re-establishing salmon fisheries of the local river systems and have a huge negative impact on tourism and the local economy.
This is a shore to shelf campaign.
If you agree that this proposed fish farm should be stopped, join the campaign.

We, the undersigned, recognise the long-term environmental and economic damage the proposed fish farm development in Broad Bay, Isle of Lewis, would do the island's environment and its economy, and hereby register our opposition to the proposed development .
We hereby call on Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar (CNES) and the Scottish Government, as principle planning authorities, to refuse Lighthouse Caledonia Ltd permission to build a fish farm in Broad Bay.

After investigating the proposed fish farm I have come to the conclusion that it will not be of significant economic benefit to the islands to justify the negative effects on the local environment, and potential detrimental impact on fishing related tourism.

I currently have a wonderful view out of my kitchen window of Broad Bay, and the area in quetion. It was why we bought the house. And now Lighthouse Caledonia want to ruin my view and, more importantly, the marine ecosystem around it, in order to boost their profits. No thanks!

This is such a beautiful area and the impact would be immense for visitors and residents alike - please please do not spoil it with a fish farm.

I regularly walk along Gress beach and I am very concerned about the impact on the enviroment.

Born and brought up in the area, still a regular visitor and very interested in salmon fishing hence my objection to the possible damage to wild salmon stocks from the proposed farm. I have seen the harm caused by disease to salmon fishing and their tourist industry in New Zealand.

The reasons that I vote against the fish farms are because of the chemicals realised into the sea, dead fish will be swept up onto our beaches and may infect other animals, such as dogs, there could be serious consiquences. The risks are too high for the rest of us when these cages will only generate four jobs. I have lived here most of my life without fish farms and would like it to continue that way. So I say 'no' to the fish farms in Broadbay! Please support this campaign by signing/joining this petition.

As a keen local angler I wouldn't like to see the fishing that has been nurtured and developed by the various angling associations damaged by the location of fish farms in the Gress area.

The impact these fish farms is catastrophic on the runs of migratory fish into their native rivers. This must be stopped and if one is desperately needed build it on land. I have visited the islands fishing the wonderful lochs and rivers and am stunned at the catastrophic decline in fish stocks. I work for a River Board on the mainland and would counsel you to stop before its too late. Angling tourism to the islands is worth much more to the local economy and will sustain far more employment and revenue for the local economy.

A fish farm could destroy the wild salmon and sea trout populations in the island's rivers

This proposal would result in the total destruction of the existing fish stock and breeding ground in Broad Bay as well as causing extensive contamination of pristine beaches. It is time that common sense prevailed over the lust for profit that the promoters are espousing.

No fish farm is needed in this area of outstanding beauty and terrific sea fishing. No need for this blot on the seacape and risk to local natural resources.

Laxdale means 'valley of the salmon' NOT 'valley of the sea lice. And that means wild salmon, not mutant rubbish from a syringe! The surrounding rivers are just coming back to life with real wild salmon after years of care and hard work. Do not let them spoil it with their chemically enhanced tastless farm fish which they only want to farm here so they can call it scottish salmon then sell it in europe to people who think its posh! Its not posh, its tastless rubber!!

Don't let it happen! This area is an area of outstanding natural beauty and an escape for many people who visit the islands. Similar large scale fish farm was planned for Isle of Arran and you can read their reasons for not having it at http://arrancoast.com/Archives/Ffwebart.html

My wife and I live near Gress Beach, one of the few pristine beaches in the Western Isles, and which supports a huge variety of wildlife. My wife swims off the beach, and we have established a kinship with the wildlife, all of which is threatened by the proposed development, which seems to bear little relationship to environmental concerns.
