Dear Oprah,
I admire and applaud all you have done for society to recognize and speak out against about so many causes including child abuse, domestic violence, and women’s rights. However, when are you going to do more to speak out about the rights of animals? I see so few articles in your magazine and shows about animal abuse, animal lab experimentation, and the atrocities that man inflicts on animals all around the world. I saw your small article by Cathleen Medwick on the book A Shadow Falls by Nick Brandt and I wept when I saw the photo of the male and female lions. Their habitat will be gone one day and their faces seem to depict their desperation for their lives and their offspring. They know they are being encroached on and their way of life is disappearing. Animals are intelligent and have all the range of feeling and awareness that humans do. All animals are now at risk, from the little frog to the mighty elephant, they will be all be gone one day, it seems inevitable now. With all your power and money, you could make a difference. Why is there not a heading in your magazine on animals? You have one for the environment, that is good, but animals deserve their own special heading in your magazine. Now it is time to spread the messages of stopping the abuses of nonhuman animals. Please, I implore you to do more. When will you speak out for animal rights as strongly as you do on other subjects and help protect these defenseless creatures?
