Petition to the Italian Railway society Ferrovie dello Stato Trenitalia

From October 1st a new rule will become valid in the Italian Railway company: dogs over 6kgs will be forbidden access on trains.
According to this new rule, permitted dogs will be travelling exclusively inside a crate and with a certificate issued by a vet, stating the absence of "infestations or transmittable pathologies".

Keeping into account that a medium size dog's average weight is around 10 kgs, this rule would forbid the access on trains to the vast majority of dogs, causing serious issues to all those who use trains as a main mean of transport.

Animal rights associations, as well as insitutions, each year take part in campaigns against the abandon of animals.Yet Trenitalia, the only Italian railway society, instead of incouraging the possibility of travelling on trains with animal companions, forbids the access to trains to middle size and large size dogs, believing that doing so will solve the hygene problem on trains.

In the vast majority of European countries dogs travel without problems on clean and tidy trains, without the need of such draconian measures which do not solve the problem of hygene: such issue in fact should be dealt with professionally and in a competent and serious manner.

The under-secretary of Welfare Francesca Martini has asked for an urgent meeting with the administrator of Trenitalia, Mr. Vincenzo Soprano, for she sees the limit of 6 kgs as "unacceptable". According to Martini such a limit would be "in contrast with the right to mobility of milions of Italian dog owners."

Please sign this petition, to help put pressure on the Italian Railway company, so that this useless and discriminatory ban can be lifted.

Distinti saluti.

Dear Trenitalia,

From October 1st a new rule will become valid in the Italian Railway company: dogs over 6kgs will be forbidden access on trains.
According to this new rule, permitted dogs will be travelling exclusively inside a crate and with a certificate issued by a vet.  I find this rule useless and discriminatory towards all those people who own a dog weighing more than 6 kgs, and who will not be able to travel by train.

In the vast majority of European countries dogs travel without problems on clean and tidy trains, without the need of such draconian measures which do not solve the problem of hygene: such issue in fact should be dealt with professionally and in a competent and serious manner.
I hereby ask for the immediate withdrawing of this useless and discriminatory limitation wich forbids the access of dogs on trains.

Kind regards,
