Jail for Hospital Employee who Stole from Dead/Dying

Target:
Fulton County, GA Superior Criminal Court
One of my dearest friends was killed in a horrific auto accident on April 30th. A Loomis (armored) truck stalled out of gas in the center lane of a busy Atlanta interstate and my friend hit it. The driver of the truck has been charged with vehicular homicide and my friend has been cleared of any fault in the accident. She leaves behind a husband and two young children, ages 1.5 and 4 (at the time of the accident).

To make matters worse, her one of a kind wedding and engagement rings were stolen from her body at the hospital where she was airlifted following the accident. It was determined that the man assigned to log victim's personal items and to tend to the victim's family is the person who stole (and pawned) her rings.

Fortunately, her rings were recovered from an Atlanta-area pawn shop and the hospital employee was charged with felony theft by taking. It has since been discovered that he stole from another victim and he has been charged with a second count of theft.

The DA and the judge in this case are pretty jail-averse...very unfortunate as this man is so worthy of being locked up for a long time.  The DA offered this man 4-6 months (yes, MONTHS) in jail, but fortunately Alan (Katherine's husband) and another victim of Jawara, named Ron Goyette were able to compel the judge to throw the plea deal out and set a court date.

The man who stole her rings goes on trial October 20, 2008 (Katherine and her husband's sixth wedding anniversary) and I have started a petition to request that he be punished to the fullest extent of the law (ten years each count) should he be found guilty.

Anyway, my request is for people to sign this petition. I am asking people to send their first and last names and city/state no later than October 10, 2008. The trial begins 10/20 and Katherine's husband, Alan will hand-deliver the petition to the prosecutor and presiding judge in the case.

I encourage you to forward Katherine's story to everyone in your address book. Please encourage those friends to forward it to their friends as well. Add it to your blog if you have one!  I have collected over 500 signatures through an email address I set up (jailforjawara@gmail.com), but discovered this website after the fact.  If you sign the petition here, it is not necessary to sign the petition via email.

The following link is a good recap of Katherine's case: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/crime/2008/05/17/seg.stolen.wedding.rings.mxf.cnn).
I am honestly hoping Katherine's story can become viral (passed on and on and on to strangers around the world) in order to demonstrate to the court the importance of this man serving the maximum time.

Sincerely,
Sheila Trimble

If you are a member of MySpace, I have created a site for Katherine here: http://www.myspace.com/jailforjawara.  Please join as a friend.  I will update the site whenever I learn something new.  Please encourage your friends to join and sign the petition as well.  Thanks.

9/2/08: Mr. Jawara has been arrested for a third count of theft by taking. His latest victim is the late Jane Pounds, a retired janitor who had $1,100 in money orders stolen from her purse as she was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA.  Jawara used $800 of the money orders for spa treatments and cashed the other $300 for himself.

9/9/08 Update: I have received 602 signatures from an email account I set up (in addition to the signatures from this site).  Our goal of 1,000 is within reach.  Please spread the word.

9/30/08: When this site hits 381 signatures, we will have 1000 total.  Thank you.

Mugshot of Tacuma Jawara:
Tacuma Jawara, charged with felony theft by taking from the late Katherine Armstrong

We the undersigned request that former Grady Memorial Hospital social worker Tacuma Jawara be sentenced to the maximum for felony theft by taking.

Tacuma Jawara is not responsible for Katherine Armstrong's death, but he is responsible for stealing her treasured wedding and engagement rings at her most vulnerable state. Further, he is responsible for causing additional pain to her beloved family at a time when they were dealing with the shock and grief over her sudden, tragic death. Mr. Jawara did not just steal from a body. Katherine was a beloved daughter and sister, a proud wife, an even prouder mother and a tremendous friend. Katherine was real.

Fortunately Katherine's rings have been rightfully returned to her beloved family, but justice needs to be served and we cannot think of a more deserving candidate to receive the maximum penalty for this heinous crime than Tacuma Jawara. We sincerely hope that you agree and utilize the maximum penalty allowed in sentencing this man.

You are receiving this message because you signed the petition supporting the maximum sentence for Tacuma Jawara, the former Atlanta, GA hospital social worker who stole from the dead and dying patients in the hospital's trauma unit.

At the hearing today, Mr. Jawara pled guilty and was sentenced to seven years for each of three counts against him. These sentences will be served concurrently (meaning all at once, so the sentence is really seven years total when it comes down to it).

Thank you for offering your support. We submitted 1,031 signatures in support of this petition to the court and I sincerely appreciate that you took the time to support this most important cause.

I will update the MySpace page I created if/when there is news. Please consider joining as a "friend." Link:

Again, thank you for your support. I miss Katherine tremendously, but it's nice to know that one chapter in this horrific story has been closed.

I am Katherine McClure's mother. I cannot express to you in words what this has done to our family. I cannot believe Fulton County courts will let Jawara get a slap on the wrist and not serve the years that he needs to. I to worked in the health care setting. Never once did I even think of stealing from anyone. And I made my life caring for the sick and dying. What kind of a person would sink so low. Most people I know are having money problems. They also donnot lower themselves to steal. Sounds like Jawara needed lot's of money to provide the life style of the rich. How dare you to steal from my dying daughter. If she was alive she would have helped you, if you needed help!!!!!! You should pay for your wrong actions. For the many!!!! people you stole from.So Fulton County do your job. Virginia prison's would welcome Mr.Jawara. Yvonne McClure

I am Katherine's nephew and was absolutely devastated when I heard she was killed on April 30th of this year. For my spring break my grandparents, myself and Katherine all went to Florida and it was just absolutely amazing. Going to her grave with my grandparents just eats me up on the inside because i just can't believe that she is gone and not hear with us. I know it must be really hard on my cousins Adam and Jackson having to deal with losing their mother. Though Adam is still a little too young to understand completely, Jackson on the other hand does and the times that we have traveled down to visit them and help Alan with things I hear Jackson in his room every night crying for his mommy. So I strongly support this petition and hope and pray that that excuse of a man Tacuma Jawara gets the maximum sentence for his hasteous crimes.

This is a heinous crime and to make it worse, the perpetrator works in the care field. It is disrespectful of the living and the deceased. It makes me want to cry to think of this family in such a horrific time of loss to have to deal with this. He should receive at least 10 years. 4 months is just a smack on the hand and sends no message at all.

This is a most disgusting crime against a deceased person and their family. The fact that this individual has done this before shows that he has no respect for the dead or those in his care.

Stealing memoirs of his Mother from a little child is unforgivable. Four months is only "I'm sorry." He deserves a stronger consequence....years, not months!

At a time like that ER personnel should be more iterested in saving a life than stealing the person's possessions. These types of people should not be working in a hospital but behind bars.

This hedious offender should be locked up for the maximum term. Stealing from a dead woman is unthinkable, as if this family has not had enough to deal with.

I think is the worst thing I have ever heard of and that someone would be that low as to steal a dead persons belongings. I agree this man needs the the book thrown at him. Tens years per case.

Kat was such a wonderful woman, loving wife, and doting mother. It was awful enough that her family lost her but for them to then have to deal with all of the legal battles because of Jawara making the wrong choices and taking things that did not belong to him...well that is just absolutely wrong and he needs to pay for what he did.

Despicable! As a cousin, nurse and fellow pharmaceutical representative, I am appalled. Each act, showed a lack of conscience and remorse and should be treated as such. Pleae seek the maximum penalty to keep this predator off the streets. Our most vulnerable citizens need to be protected and cared for with dignity and repect. This man needs to learn that there is accountability and that there are no "spas" in jail!
