Tell Japan: Don't Use Tsunami Reconstruction Funding For Whale Slaughter

Commercial whaling has essentially been banned in Japan since an international treaty was formed in 1987. However, Japan has continued to kill whales under the guise of scientific research. Now, they're using funds set aside for tsunami reconstruction to continue the slaughter.

After the tsunami and subsequent earthquake that was experienced throughout the country in March 2011, Japan set aside a budget for the helpless victims of the disaster. Authorities are now saying that $29 million will be earmarked for whaling ship security.

Tell the Japan Fisheries Agency that this act is absolutely inexcusable. There is no reason that both disaster victims and endangered whales should suffer at the hands of greed. Tell Japan that using this money to enhance the endangered whale catch this year is both illogical and inhumane.
We the undersigned are writing to ask you to reconsider the allocation of the tsunami reconstruction funds that are now being directed towards whaling. This is money that should be going to directly aid the victims of the disaster and not assisting with an archaic hunt of one of our world's most endangered species.

Last year,  whaling was interrupted by anti-whaling group, The Sea Shepard Society, and the determination, shown by this gesture, not to let this happen again has gone way too far.. Such single-mindedness means siphoning money away from the people that need this money the most in order to rebuild their lives. Is planting extra security on whaling ships really more valuable than the livelihoods of your people?

This act is absolutely inexcusable. The budget initially set aside for rebuilding after the tsunami should in fact be directed towards the people affected most by the disaster. Using this money to enhance the endangered whale catch this year is a far cry from spending this money effectively, logically or humanely. Please urgently redirect these funds to the people that truly need it.
