Justice for these dogs

We, the undersigned, request the immediate removal of Prof. Jayanthe Rajapakse from the position held at Peradeniya Veterinarian Faculty, and Dr. Wasantha Kumara as Head Surgeon of the Government Veterinary Hospital, Gatambe., Sri Lanka.

We also request their veterinarian licenses  are revoked and a ban imposed to approach any living animal for the rest of their natural lives and that an open inquiry be held and the public told what they did with the organs they removed.

Those two individuals represent a shame for the entire international veterinarian and scientific community and a potential risk for animals and/or people as well.

Our request is based on the account of facts stated below.

On 22 and 23 May 2007, Professor R.P.V.J. Rajapakse, Head,
Department of Veterinary Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of Peradeniya, adopted 3 dogs from KACPAW shelter for destitute dogs, saying the dogs were being taken to loving homes.  One dog was adopted on the 22nd and the other two on the 23rd.

The dogs, named Perry, Wussie and Polly, had been spayed and vaccinated against rabies, parvo-virus and distemper at KACPAW.

On 28th May 2007 KACPAW's members discovered to their horror that Professor Rajapakshe had not taken any of the dogs he adopted to the homes as he made them believe at the time of adoption, but instead taken them straight away to the Government Veterinary Hospital at Gatambe, where extensive invasive surgery had been carried out on all three dogs on 22 May 2007 and 23 May 2007  by Dr. Wasantha Kumara, the Veterinary Surgeon who heads the Hospital.

The surgeries did not have any scientific purpose; even school teenagers know that any living creature cannot live without vital organs such as the kidneys, so these two professionals of doubtful reputation were just performing a large scale butchery at the government veterinarian hospital for the sake of sadism.

Polly died for she had her kidneys removed, Wussie will remain in hospital for a long time for having had her pancreas removed and will face a life long treatment and Perry has currently got 30 sutures on her abdomen.
