Justice's Law

Background:

Justice Christopher Calvin Myers-Cannon is the son of A1C Christopher Cannon, USAF and Ashley Myers.  Justice was the pride and joy of the whole family and was loved dearly by all.  He was the only child for both Chris and Ashley and the only grandchild for the grandparents.  Justice could light up a room with the glee in his crystal blue eyes.  If you ask anyone in the family, he was just a special little person to all.  There was something about Justice that made him the life of the family.  On January 4, 2007 our family endured a tragic event that would change our lives forever.  Justice was severely beaten about the head and shaken by Floyd Bingaman III (age 20) and left in his crib to die.  The paramedics worked on Justice for approx. 20 minutes at the house to bring life back to him before deciding to transport him to the local hospital which is a trauma center only to find out that the hospital could not provide Justice with the care he required.  Justice was then air transported via helicopter to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland so that he could be afforded the care he required. The Doctor, an expert in Shaken Baby Syndrome at Johns Hopkins, said Justices head injuries were the worst he has seen in 30 years of his career.  The extent of his injuries were revealed in court; Justice had multiple skull fractures, bleeding around the brain, bleeding between the two halves of the brain, a detached retina and hemorrhaging behind the eyes.  Justice spent 2 ½ days on life support before it was determined there was nothing more the specialists could do for him and we were faced with the reality that there was no life for Justice to be had.  Justice was pronounced dead on January 6, 2007.  Chris and Ashley decided to have Justice be an organ donor and he donated organs to three people on the east coast.  As for the killer, well he has seen his day in court.  Week of November 29, 2007 we went to trial and Floyd Bingaman III was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, child abuse-resulting in death, and assault-second degree.  On January 3, 2008 Floyd Bingaman III received a 40 year sentence with 10 years suspended, 4 years probation upon his release (if he makes it that long in prison), and upon his release he is prohibited from having contact with any minor 12 years old and under.  During sentencing, not once did Floyd Bingaman address our family.  All we heard were his pleas to the judge for mercy in sentencing.  We the family, believe that he should have received the First Degree Murder w/o parole but unfortunately the jury did not see fit.  What Floyd Bingaman took from us will NEVER be replaced or erased from our memory.  Justice will forever be remembered and never forgotten.  Floyd has his life, Justice does not and that is why we are here to fight for a change in the law for the State of Maryland.  Please join and support us in our fight for baby Justice by signing our petition and please leave comments of your support because the comments have a great impact on lawmakers.  Children are our future and we need to protect them. These innocent, defenseless children rely upon us to do just that.  We must band together and put a STOP to this violence. We must band together to ensure the criminals stay behind bars for a VERY long time and away from our babies.

Our Petition:

On January 6, 2007, Justice Christopher Calvin Myers-Cannon died as a result of child abuse.  Justice was 4 ½ months old at the time of his death.  Under current Maryland Law, the death of a child as the result of child abuse is not an automatic charge of First Degree Murder.  Under current Maryland Law, First Degree Murder is automatically charged if the murder is committed during an arson or attempted arson; a burglary in the first, second, or third degree; a robbery; a carjacking; an escape from a state or local correctional facility; poisoning; kidnapping; mayhem; rape; sexual offense in the first or second degree; and sodomy.  Although these crimes are all very serious crimes, the family of Justice Christopher Calvin Myers-Cannon believes that the murder of a defenseless child is the most heinous crime that an individual can commit.  Therefore, the family of Justice Christopher Calvin Myers-Cannon is petitioning for an initiative to enact into law that the death of a child during the course of child abuse be automatically considered as First Degree Murder.

Thank you for your support and God Bless you.
