KEEP HUGH MILLER'S COTTAGE IN CROMARTY OPEN FOR THE PUBLIC

We, the undersigned, urge the National Trust of Scotland (NTS)to remove Hugh Miller's cottage in Cromarty, Ross-Shire from their list of proposed closures. Hugh Miller opened the eyes of the world to how the natural world evolved at a time when fossil study was rare and amassed a collection of over 6000 specimens through tireless and solitary labour. As one the world's foremost thinkers, writers and geologists of the 19th century he pushed forward the boundaries of scientific knowledge in his field almost single-handedly.

His story is one of a hugely influential, but tragically neglected, geniuses of natural history and to close his cottage to the public and the children who can learn from his life and work would only further compound this great injustice.

His birthplace and home should be kept open to the public as a source of information and inspiration for generations to come.
