The Society for Financial Education and Professional Development, Inc. (SFEPD) and Harvard Business Publishing’s Leadership blog “Leadership Matters,” by John Baldoni, noted “Tough times are a great time to renew trust. When customers and employees see the leadership team standing front and center and delivering the message, it demonstrates that management cares about them and considers them essential to weathering the storm. Canceling such meetings, except when there are no other alternatives, sends the message that employees and even vendors and customers are expendable.” Unfortunately if you don’t meet in person, it is easy to be forgotten or worse—replaced by those who do see eachother on a regular basis—potentially your competitors. Large meetings and conferences are more cost effective than individual customer visits for two reasons: 1) Travel expenses to see 100's of people at one location, vs 100 trips via plane or car to a customers location, 2) Mindset of the customer is open to hearing what you have to say, simply because they elected to come to the conference, vs you intruding on their day-to-day business where they could be interupted by business at hand. We are still human beings and as such we need and crave human contact. Internet meetings, social networking and teleconferences serve their purpose; however, the success of teambuilding events are proof there is no replacement for human contact via a handshake, a glance, a hug, or a hand on your shoulder that says, "it's okay." Imagine this world without live sports ... could we replace the Super Bowl with a Virtual Bowl? I think NOT. Why then replace Live Events? |
