I am located in Las Vegas, NV. and it is no secret that our cities economy has shown a substantial loss of meetings and conferences. We are trying to engage corporations to host their meeting in our city. I own my company and I have suffered a huge financial loss due to the withdraw of meetings from our city. I am financially strapped and in jeopardy of losing my home. I feel President Obama's comments towards Las Vegas are yet another slap in the face of our economy.

I am in the marketing field. I hope to apply that to the hospitality/meeting/event industry. From these perspectives, I see tremendous value in face-to-face interaction in pleasant surroundings, with a positive, even excellent service experience as a platform for that interaction… for businesses internally (retreats), industries (trade events), businesses externally (workshops, customer appreciation events, seminars, etc.) These events and meetings not only preserve/create jobs for those in the hospitality/event marketing industry, but both solidify existing relationships and create new business for those holding and/or attending these meetings. Our governments need to hold meetings as well, but I believe they need to find ways to show restraint in expenditures and the level of grandeur and consumption in order to save taxpayer dollars, while still enabling the assembly of lawmakers and other officials, accomplishing and their goals and benefitting businesses with government funds. Savvy hospitality groups should be able to put together packages that can satisfy the needs of these groups, while not leaving the public with the impression that taxpayer dollars have been mishandled

I'm a production management consultant specializing in AV and video production, conference archiving and media production. Like so many others, our business revolves around the meetings industry. Top it off with the fact that we're in Phoenix, a major meetings destination. The financial impact of the downturn in this and related industries on our local and state economy has become infamous. It's time to move on and start meeting again!

Hospitality is my life, it is my passion. I enjoy every aspect of it and meetings are a big slice of the industry. For someone to be able to meet with thier peers, learn about new trends is key for developing new ideas, your own person, develop new products, and plethora of etcs. Not supporting this sector is not only distroying the Hospitality business but keeping our employment high. Other countries depend on meetings and tourism and we're killing these destinations slowly. We need to keep America meeting within our borders and outside in order to come out of what seems like a bottomless pit.

The Society for Financial Education and Professional Development, Inc. (SFEPD) and Harvard Business Publishing’s Leadership blog “Leadership Matters,” by John Baldoni, noted “Tough times are a great time to renew trust. When customers and employees see the leadership team standing front and center and delivering the message, it demonstrates that management cares about them and considers them essential to weathering the storm. Canceling such meetings, except when there are no other alternatives, sends the message that employees and even vendors and customers are expendable.” Unfortunately if you don’t meet in person, it is easy to be forgotten or worse—replaced by those who do see eachother on a regular basis—potentially your competitors. Large meetings and conferences are more cost effective than individual customer visits for two reasons: 1) Travel expenses to see 100's of people at one location, vs 100 trips via plane or car to a customers location, 2) Mindset of the customer is open to hearing what you have to say, simply because they elected to come to the conference, vs you intruding on their day-to-day business where they could be interupted by business at hand. We are still human beings and as such we need and crave human contact. Internet meetings, social networking and teleconferences serve their purpose; however, the success of teambuilding events are proof there is no replacement for human contact via a handshake, a glance, a hug, or a hand on your shoulder that says, "it's okay." Imagine this world without live sports ... could we replace the Super Bowl with a Virtual Bowl? I think NOT. Why then replace Live Events?

No matter how many different ways there are to communicate your message, the one with the most energy is to meet face to face. Meetings generate energy and excitement around a product, company or idea and turn that into success for all those connected with it.

With the continued state of the national economy, now, more than ever, it is important to recognize true performers in companies across the country. Employees at all levels are asked to do more with less, and efforts that produce successful results should be recognized and rewarded. Trips, meetings, and other incentives are a vital part of overall compensation packages. This helps attract top talent, and builds stability for the company and the economy in general. As more companies operate nationally and globally, meetings and corporate events are vital in building and maintaining strong relationships, internally and externally.

I am an independent meeting planner, so meetings are my career / paycheck. I also plan international incentives, so besides generating important revenue for countries dependent on tourism, I also am introducing different cultures / countries to my attendees which fosters respect and understanding of global communities.
