LA QUINTA DESIGNATED OFF LEASH AREA FOR DOGS

Target:
La Quinta City Council Members
Sponsored by:
We the undersigned petition La Quinta City Council Members for a designated area for our dogs to be off leash.

La Quinta Residents and Part-time residents only....please sign the petition and pass it along to your friends, families, and neighbors.      Public officials like to see names and comments.  Comments make the issue personal.

"A good dog is a tired dog."  The cardiovascular benefit provided by healthy dog to dog play is great for dogs.  Dogs need to run, chase balls and play frisbee.  Healthy dogs are calmer and better behaved.

We believe the area south of the La Quinta Cove Oasis is the perfect spot for off-leash.  It is wide open space.  We moved to La Quinta so we could enjoy the open space with our dogs.

We believe owners should be responsible.  Their dogs should be licensed and feces picked up.  Dogs should be well-behaved.

The current dog parks are to small.  Even if you combined all the dog parks in La Quinta into one park it would be to small for large dogs to run and play.

The city states that California Leash Law requires dogs to be on-leash.  Many cities allow un-fenced off-leash areas like Palm Desert, Coronado and Huntington Beach.

Attached is a petition signed by residents and snowbirds to La Quinta.  We all want an area where our dogs can run and play without a lease.  We have suggested the area on the south of La Quinta....at the top of the La Quinta cove.  Please read their comments

The dog parks in La Quinta are way to small.  We need a 5 acre dog park.  Thank you for listening to your city residents.

Sincerely,

Dog owners

We need an off-leash area for our dogs to play and enjoy being with other friendly dogs. And la quinta cove area would be a great place for it.

Open space trails are available to us throughout Boulder County (Colorado). The time we've spent here has been unfairly prohibitive to a dog used to daily, off-leash exercise. Where a dog park provides socialization, open-space trails allow us all to get good walks in. Boulder requires an agreement with specific regulations (non-aggressive, well-mannered, cleanup, etc) and purchase of a tag affirming as much. I'd suggest you explore the models that exist elsewhere around the country.

I support this petition to have an off leash area for dogs. Having had much experience with dogs, an area in the wide open spaces south of the La Quinta Cove Oasis is perfect will contribute greatly to happy, people-friendly dogs. Why not give the dogs a little free range in this area away from residences. Mindful dog owners, and most dog owners are, will keep the area safe and clean of feces promoting loving dogs and well behaved dogs as well. Just think if you were a dog, especially a large dog, and had no place to run and play! Helen Albert

We own a large dog and she needs her space to run!! The dog park is just not large enough for her to get a good work out. With all the space we are blessed to have, I think some of it could be designated for the many of us who have dogs in the cove! Thank you!!

I'm all for this but think there should be a limit of 2 dogs per person. I've been up hiking and walking in the cove for over 15 years and have run into a person on several occasions who has 5 unleashed big dogs come around the corner and it was pretty scary for my one medium sized dog. There should definitely be more poop baskets and signs as many of the current dog walkers are too lazy to walk 100 feet to the current baskets. Maybe the city ( isn't this CVWD property)would agree to this if we organized a massive poop cleanup to clean up the area like the volunteers that pick up the junk that people leave up there.

Responsible and loving dog owners should be allowed to enjoy the wide open spaces with their dogs. The joy that comes from this is both beneficial to the person and their dog. Harmony for all.

My husband and I strongly support a large leash free area. We believe that as a community we should provide for the safety and health of our pets, especially as they take on more and more importance in our daily lives.

I've been running my lab up in the cove's desert for 4 years and she love's the freedom to hunt lizards, chase roadrunners and get out her energy! The only restriction should be Mean dogs must be leashed

There is nothing my son and Tibbie enjoy more then playing ball together. My 3 year old son kicks the ball and our dog loves to chase the ball. After play time both are happy and relaxed. It would mean so much..........for our dogs to be able to have that off lease time to really run and enjoy themselves. They are much happier and better behaved. Thank you for your consideration.

I have two different ideas within this statement, so please read the whole thing. I live in La Quinta Cove and I am a responsible dog guardian of three large dogs who are all licensed with the city of LQ. I always pick up my dog's poop when we are up in the mountains and bike path areas of La Quinta Cove. Just because there are a few irresponsible owners I think it is a shame that off-leash priveleges are ruined for the rest of us. Being off-leash, running, exploring and meeting other dogs fullfills our dog's needs that cannont be fulfilled on the end of a 6 foot leash. Actually, more dog to dog problems occur when dogs meet on a leash (it is called leash aggression) Dogs should meet without leashes. If someone has a highly aggressive dog then they shouldn't be around other dogs up there or at dog parks or anywhere. People who have problem dogs, know they have problem dogs and they don't frequent off leash areas. I have never met anyone up on the trails with their dogs that don't have social, well mannered dogs. Idea # 1 If we could have a fenced or unfenced area that people could bring their dogs too while up in the canyon then you would have a lot less people walking in other parts of the canyons with their dogs off leash anyhow! There are paths in the canyons that runner, walkers and hikers use, but there are many other paths that no one is on and would be perfect for dogs to hike off leash with their owners. If it is cleary posted at the parking lot and other areas, with a map of where you can let your dog FREE and where you can't then I believe it would be followed. Up over that back bluff area is perfect (south) or areas to the East and on the West side of Montezuma where there are trails on the other side of the wash. If you allow off leash and give rules, the city will have more control over things than if you just outlaw it and people do it anyhow. More poop bags and especially garbage cans would be helpful. I would be happy to give my opinion, if needed of where to place a few more cans that would be accessible for a city vehicle to come empty. Sometimes the cans up there are overflowing to the ground because the city workers dont' come empty them and because there are too few and far. IDEA # 2 I met a man up in the canyon the other day from Colorado and he couldn't believe that there are leash laws up there, he said where he lives all his dogs need is a green tag on their collar and they are allowed to hike ANYWHERE with him. Perhaps there could be some sort of registration that the dogs could go through with the city (pay a fee of course) to get a special tag that shows they are allowed to be off leash up in the designated canyon areas because they paid a fee, are up to date on vaccinations, licensing and the owner signs an agreement of being a responsible owner with a well-balanced dog that is well socialized to people and other dogs. Then the people who want to do this and go through the process and PAY A FEE, could do it and not be ticketed. I am sure people would be so happy they were allowed to let their dog's off leash that they would be very responsible, the dogs would be happier and thus better behaved in all areas of their life AND the city would make extra money! There are so many places all over the country that allow dogs off leash in hiking/trail areas and they have no problems. There are books written exclusively about camping, hiking, dogparks with your dog. I am not sure why the laws here are so behind the times. I really think some sort of agreement can be worked out that would benefit both sides.

The city should allow an area for residents to be able to take their dogs to an area for them to run around and play with other dogs. They need to be let free to run instead of being leashed and cooped up in a house all day.

In four years of walking my dog in the cove, I have yet to see any two dogs not get along. Owners who have aggressive dogs should keep them leashed, but don't punish those who love to interact with other dogs. I miss seeing dogs chasing tennis balls, running free to play with others.

Our dogs are large. They were raised on a ranch, and they need the exercise from running off-leash. We do not want our dogs, who are well-behaved, to cause people to be uncomfortable who want to walk where there are no dogs off-leash. We understand that discomfort, but our dogs need the exercise from running off-leash. Big dogs need a large off-leash area such as south La Quinta Cove Oasis area in which to run.

My large dogs need to run and the current fenced dog parks are too small for them to get any real exercise. Even if it was fenced, 5 acres up here would be great. No grass or benches needed, just a place where they can run without people yelling and complaining. Why limit the petition to La Quinta residents only? The hiking trails are for everyone in the valley to enjoy, why shouldn't the support for the dog park be regional too?

I relocated to La Quinta because of the beauty of it's landscape and the people that appreciate an active lifestyle. But why was there no consideration given to our best friends? The number of households with dog in La Quinta justifies the creation of a substantial off leash area!

One of these days our precious pets will have nowhere they can run and jump and breathe fresh air because everywhere you turn there are more and more "No Dogs Allowed!" Couldn't the city be generous enough to save a small area of land for the animals in our lives? My dog doesn't golf... so what is he to do?

Our dogs need a place to play. Our back yard is very small. A designated area is a great compromise. Dogs deserve a place to run.

This is a greatly needed service! As our homes and yards are getting smaller our dogs have less and less chance to exercise enough. In addtion, our 'dog park' is way too small compared to other communities. Thank you for approving this!

When we first moved here, the rule was if we were out of public eye we could let our dog off leash. That is the way it should remain,it's silly one can not let the dog off leash out in the desert. It's wrong one out of control dog should set the rules for everyone!

Just as people should not be confined, neither should dogs. It would be a great benefit to the animals to run freely in a safe and remote area. We are lucky to have a city council who would never violate our beautiful surroundings. So we emplore you, let us enjoy them with our animals. I think I speak for a lot of dog owners when I say that I can't wear my dog out before myself. Leashes are a necessity in almost any other setting, but please, let us have an area of refuge.

I find that my dog in particular, an extremely well balanced dog, and would benifit from this change. The dog park is great, we go there about 4 times a week, but yes....it is too small. I have found that most people who know they do not have the best behaved dog...will not take their dogs to these types of places. I don't think there will be any problems with this addition to designate areas. I think it will be great and the city will appreciate it in the end as well.

La Quinta really needs an off leash area. We also live in Seattle and have great off leash parks. The ones in L.Q. are useless if you have a large dog.

Dogs are a very important part of many families. A safe area for all to play is vital. Far too much land is designated to golf and more golf and more walls. Please keep space for all, wild or tame to roam.

I am for a designated area, but I have a concern for those who "do" have their dogs on a leash for a reason. Their dog may not get along with other dogs and a friendly dog running up to a leashed dog can be a problem. I am a dog lover and believe they do need to run and excercise. It would need to be some type of controlled space. The flat space at the top of the cove would work. It is large and owners with leashed dogs could see them easily and avoid the area. Dogs could be released off leash once they have arrived to that area, not on street, sidewalks, parking areas,or trails.

If your going to have a big dog in a residential area, then you should have a place for them to run and play. To keep them on a leash all times, or have them couped up in a small back yard is cruel to the dog. Give owners an alternative. Let them take their dogs to a designated area to truly run free and unencumbered.

Please do this. The dogs need a bigger place than the "lot sized" doggie park existing. This will bring more good people (who love their dogs) to La Quinta and complete the wonderful community feeling we have!! Thanks. (it is true...a good dog is a tired and exercised dog!!) JF
