Do we really want to live in a world without our closest relative?!

Compulsory labeling of palm oil

Target:
The Australian and New Zealand government
Sponsored by:
Palm oil plantations kill around 50 orangutans per week, and their reproduction rate is only 1 baby every 7 years! At the moment, palm oil can be labeled as 'vegetable oil' in products, but us, as the public would like to be able to make informative choices. And as well as killing orangutans, palm oil is also terrible for our health!

we would just like to be able to have the right to make informative choices when purchasing goods, as 'vegetable oil' could be one of many types of oils, most non-deadly.
It isn't a very big ask, but it could make a very big impact on the survival of these beautiful orangutan's survival.

People deserve the choice to know if they are purchasing a product that is a food source for thousands of orangutans

I am 14 years old and I can't believe orangutans could die out in only 10 years. We need more people to get on board to help these endangered animals and make sure palm oil is labeled so people know what palm oil is doing to orangutans.

People have the right to know what they are buying and using

The consumer has a right to know what ingrediants they are buying and therefore make our own choices. Palm oil is killing the orangutan and their habitat.

We, the public, have a right to know the specific ingredients in our food and cosmetic products. Products containing palm oil and its derivatives are used to feed and groom our bodies, yet we may only see the vague description of "vegetable oil." I in no way condone the deforestation process currently employed to build palm plantations. I want labels to be specific so that I have the choice to stand by my convictions. Because of the palm oil industry the beautiful orangutan is projected to become extinct in as little as 10 years. Deforestation is not necessary to produce palm oil. Palm oil in itself, is a useful product for cooking and cosmetics. However, until its derivation process is modified I have the right to boycott this product. Forest destruction aside, as a consumer, I believe I should be able to fully understand the products being sold to me, and thus, more specific labeling is necessary.

I like to be able to make informed decisions about what I am buying; I don't want to be involved in the deaths of innocent animals.

We want to KNOW what is in the products we buy, what the companies we support through our buying habits are using in their products. It seems like a perfectly reasonable concept. Apparently product labels are supposed to provide us with the details so we can make informed and healthy choices. I'd say products that are NOT decimating our rain forests, greatly contributing to carbon emissions and killing our precious endangered species are the healthier choice for all. We need the facts to be able to do so, thanks.
