Let deviants under 18 view "Mature" art!

Target:
Deviantart administrators

The art website, http://www.deviantart.com/ has recently blocked all users under the age of eighteen from viewing any artwork marked as "mature".  "Mature" art, for the most part, means nude art.  Some people may think this is a good rule--which would be true if by "mature art" they meant pornography, but they do not.  They are simply referring to art where the naked human body is shown (and some of the blocked deviations aren't even images.  some are stories and poems that have been deemed graphic or gory and should be read with caution.)

In the past, deviantart gave its members the choice whether or not to view an image marked as "mature".  When the user clicked a link to the image a grey box would be in place of the image that stated "this image may contain mature content.  Do you wish to view it anyway?" and the deviant could gauge their own maturity and view the image if they wanted to, and not view if they didn't.  This was a wonderful system, where the deviant could decide if the image was appropriate for them, and if they didn't think it was, they didn't have to look.

I feel it is important to reiterate that this is not pornography that they are blocking members from seeing (pornography is not allowed on the site, and if they are confident in their abilities to enforce their own rules, this shouldn't be a problem).  This is art.  In essence, they are blocking pieces like Michelangelo's David from younger artists, because it features the naked body.

The human body is a beautiful thing, and should not be hidden from anyone!  Let us have a choice to view it!

If you agree, whether you're over or under the age of eighteen, please sign this pettition to allow ALL members to view ALL art.  Every signature will help!

We the undersigned would like members of deviantart of ALL ages to be allowed to view art marked as "mature".  We believe that the member should have the right to gauge what is appropriate them, and make their own choice on whether they wish to view the art or not.

It is easy to see where you were coming from by not allowing members under the age of eighteen to view mature art.  Some parents might not approve of what their children are viewing on this website--but there is a better way to ease parent's minds than blocking all young artists from viewing mature art.  You could add a feature that allows parents to change their child's settings, and block them from art content they don't wish to see.  This way, concerned parents would be content, and so would the young deviants who's parents do allow them to view mature art.

It is unfair to block all young users from mature art, and we hope that you can will change your mind and allow deviants under the age of eighteen to view it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

While I am not under the age of 18, I have several friends who are and I was once that age myself. DeviantArt must realise that in this day and age many minors will have come across nude, graphic, even explicit materials in their travels, and that the "mature content" filters can easily be bypassed on dA by anyone with a little net-savvy. The human body is nothing to be ashamed of, and this sort of Comstockery in relation to it is simply absurd. Deviants, this isn't Victorian England. Children's TV presenters regularly get naked for centrefold spreads in magazines available to people over 15 (and under 15 if they can look mature enough, no ID required), so called "softcore porn"... Is it just me, or does DeviantART seem incredibly behind the times in light of this?

Dear dA admin. 1) Censorship=not receiving rights. Underaged not exempt (Read the UN's "Rights Of The Child"). 2)Mature:...characteristic of full development (dictionary.com). Seeing that development is "improvement" which is relative to values. For an example, legalising gay marriage. Some may think this as an "improvement' whereas others as a "deterioration". Therefore treating those with characteristics of "maturity", or "mature" individuals is relative to values and attitudes of people. Purely stating that being over 18 is an "improvment" to being underaged means nothing.

As a dA user under 18 I find it irratable when looking at anatomy pictures of the human body, but I can't veiw one simply because there is slight nudity in the deviation. In all honesty, most under 18's have seen nudity before, in school we are made to veiw Sex ED videos which have nudity in them. Afterall, it's only the human body, and we've all seen them.

being mature does not mean you are of a certain age. I know that most people under the age of 18 might not be very mature, because I friends that are not,but I also have very mature friends. someone could be 30 and be less mature than a 14 year old. would you block great masterpieces from any under the age of 18 just because it has nudity in it. There is nothing wrong with young people seeing the body,in fact most people already know what it looks. Unless they do not take showers or ever change your clothes, everyone at some point in time is going to see a nude body, you can not stop them from that. The most we can do is try to prevent porn, but that is intirelly diferant than a just a nude body.

My god, adults freak out over the littlest things. You're caught looking at a naked body and you get called a pervert. You get caught reading bloody manga and you get called a violence addict that needs to see anger management. Are we supposed to be hippies?! Are we supposed to see nothing but sunshine and bunny rabbits and happiness until we become eighteen, the day the REAL meaning of the world is thrust at us and it's telling us, straight up, "HAHA MOTHER ****ER, THE WORLD ISN'T HAPPY!" WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW! WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO VIEW THESE DEVIATIONS!

It should be up to the person, if there is such a concern about viewing "Naughty Bits" the own PARENTS should be responsible, it shouldn't be up to the site, since if you don't want your child exposed to such a thing its the parents duty to watch what their kid is doing, not DeviantART's. Parents want to be blissfully unaware to what their child is doing on the net which is not how it should be and I bet you ten bucks thats how this whole thing started, is some kid saw a boob, giggled, mum found out and wrote a nasty letter, but where was the parent while all this was going oh Hmm?

let upcoming artists have the right to CHOOSE to see what they want- supposed someone needs a nude model pic to reference a pose or gesture? are you really gonna limit them from learning? if you are are so concerned that they'll look for porn, then do your damned job as dA Mods and Admins and REMOVE pornographic pictures! and what about the artists who are under 18 and submit their works as 'mature' for completely DIFFERENT reasons?! you can't blanket them too from seeing their OWN work!!

People will be stupid, but you should enable a method of parental management over simply blocking the artwork. I know numerous students who are legally permitted to view nude photography for research, and in addition many who post "mature" content but cannot view their own art. Leave the parents the tool to do it, but do not play the role of the parents yourself. At least read this and consider the fact the way you did it was carried about improperly and revise it. I post most of my art as mature, and when I tried to reaccess my OWN ART I can't even do that, even though the art is only mature because of strong emotions and profanity.

So, suddenly when we hit 18, we are mature enough to see things we weren't before? No, not unless we see some mature things before then. We become mature by experiance, not by age. The two are not one or the same. It won't matter if you are 13 or 30, but you will never be able to handle these things unless you are exposed to them in the right ways. DA shows the human nude, mostly, in a way that is artistic and honest. I would much rather young people see nudes there, in the context of art, than on the many porn sites where one merely has to lie about their age and click a button to gain entry to far, far more obscene material.

I don't think it's fair to users who are under 18, but are mature, besides, what is being shown is art, everyone have the right to see it.

Many of the things I looked at on deviantART were Mature rated. I was pissed the day I logged on and saw I had no option to view it. DeviantART is all about taking art seriously. How can they do this if they dont even take their younger artists seriously?
