Allow Burning Man Participants To Vote For Theme

Allow Burning Man Participants To Vote For Theme

Target:
The Burning Man Project (BMOrg)
Sponsored by:
If Burning Man is truly a participant sponsored, participant created event then why not allow its participants to vote for and choose the event art theme each year? The Burning Man Project can suggest a few theme choices and then burners can vote for their favorite. Give people who attend Burning Man the freedom to create the theme so they are participating and creating the event experience in the most absolute sense.

We the undersigned would like the Burning Man Project to allow Burning Man particpants to vote for the event art theme every year.

Burning Man is a beautiful event and we would like to see it continue to thrive. If burners are given the freedom to choose the event art theme then you will achieve a deeper level of enthusiasm, commitment, and participation from burners. Thanks so much for your time and interest.

Nighlife, The Mechanacle Age, Twisted, The Truth... those are a few ideas for a theme....

How about: Burning Person: The Global Dream, just to be on te safe side? Hmmm, but I do believe that the argument for the community selecting the theme is valid. If you want an American reference that is truly global in scope, maybe call it Burning Bush...but hey, that also maybe construed as too Judeo-Christian... let's just go with participant selection.

Burning Man's participants show incredible creativity every year and could certainly develop wonderful themes!

This years theme really sucks, it completely isolates us from the global community. Don't we already have that problem with the current president!

Being from Australia and attending BM for the 1st time in 2008 (and my first time to the US), I am a little disappointed that the legendary global community of Burning Man is now becoming just that - legend. I have nothing against patriotism, but keeping an Americo-centric theme is a negative step IMO.

Choosing jingoism for the 2008 theme shows BMORG has completely lost it. I know people refusing to go if that's really the theme. PLEASE let us correct that blunder and then pick for 09, 10, et cetera. Thank you.

I am really disappointed with this year's theme- people come from all over the world to attend this event: the theme should be universal to reflect this. How can something like the 'American Dream' really be interpreted by someone who has never been here before? Why should they be thinking about and expressing the dreams WE, the american attendees, have for the future-- rather than the dreams that THEY and their society have themselves (which would be infinitely more interesting and diverse for the rest of us as well)! It draws lines rather than blurring them, which is one of the great things burning man can potentially do. Go back to arty themes which encourage actual ART rather than crass STATEMENT. we all know art is a higher form of expression, that's why we are here. -Julia

I think it's great that this is being brought up, we should have a choice in the theme since it is our city. Anybody up for burning the man on Friday night :o)

I feel that burning man is an event that caters to independent thought and expression. With this in mind, I say that the artists that reside within the sphere of Burning Man culture deserve to create the final form of Burning Man itself that they already do in some extent with their creativity and artistry: The theme.

Please change the theme, this is the most offensive and stupid theme I have ever heard. I am an Australian, living in this insane country, offended, saddened and embarrassed what this country has become, is causing and creating. There is no need to make this event related to any country. Why not just use DREAM

I think a theme is a good idea, it allows people who are not in communication with each other to work toward a common goal or artistic direction. I also think the people that are creating the art should have an influence on what the theme is.

I feel we should be able to choose and vote on our own themes. I was shocked to see a theme chosen when I walked in the door from this years burn.. I don't care for it, really, because of me almost being ashamed to be american w/ the "president" we have and the views of 'our gov't', but I will go and participate as always..it will be yr 8 for me and I think somewhere awhile ago there was a time when we put in our own theme choices and it was voted on??

Why shouldn't we be allowed to pick the theme? How about we try a year where the theme is No Theme?

I agree, allowing the community of B.M. to help choose the theme would give us somewhat more of a voice as far as the art is concerned.

While I am stupendously grateful to all at BM for 6 wonderful burns (and often for the themes that helped in making those events great-"7 Ages", "Floating World" "Psyche" "Hope or Fear")--I'd be a hypocrit if I didn't add my name here. I realize that the theme is Larry's baby-and I mean no disrespect, but it leaves me cold. And to some extent-so what?-"then do something else." Still, how cool would it be if BMORG actually listened to these requests and made an adjustment. In any event, looking forward to next year.

I agree with the petition except for the part about letting the Borg suggest choices. Why can't people see and vote on all the potential themes? People could do great proposals around themes. Artists could do a proposal to do the Man's Base and a theme combined.

Many things about BRC can't or shouldn't be democratic, but the artistic theme isn't one of them. Open it up.
