Let's be proactive and put a stop to Bullying!

Let's be proactive and put a stop to Bullying!

Target:
The Honorable Darin King (Minister of Education)

The below mentioned speaks for itself and needs no explanation as to why this petition has commenced, to why there needs to be a preventative bully action plan implemented and to why we NEED YOUR SIGNATURE!

What is bullying?

Bullying is a dynamic of unhealthy interaction. It is a form of repeated aggression used from a position of power. It can be physical, verbal, or social.

Bullying may be a relationship problem. Students who bully are learning to use power and aggression to control and distress others. Students who are repeatedly bullied are trapped in an abusive relationship. As a relationship problem, bullying requires relationship solutions. To exert power, bullies may use an advantage in size, strength, age, or intelligence; an advantage in social status or peer group solidarity; or knowledge of another%u2019s vulnerability.

Bullying can be direct or indirect. Physical bullying includes hitting, shoving, stealing, or damaging property. Verbal bullying involves name-calling, mocking, sexual harassment, or racist or homophobic comments. Social bullying can be carried out by excluding others from a group, or spreading gossip or rumours about them. These rumours are often spread quickly through e-mail, cell phones, or text messages to threaten, harass, or exclude.

Victims of bullying often deal with social anxiety and loneliness, withdrawal, physical ailments such as headaches or stomach aches, low self esteem, school absenteeism, diminished academic performance, phobias, depression, aggressive behaviour. In the most extreme cases, the result is suicide. Students who drop out to escape bullying suffer the long-term personal and socio-economic consequences of an interrupted education.

Bullies who learn to use aggression as a form of power may develop other significant problems including moral disengagement, delinquency, substance abuse, adult criminality, and suicide. They may perpetuate bullying behaviour in their relationships by using sexual harassment, dating aggression and other forms of victimization to support unhealthy power structures.

Think of this..In an Adult world it is called harassment but in a child world it is labelled as bullying. I do not see the difference in the meaning as both are still unwarranted behaviour with the same outcome. Do you see a difference?

Dear Minister

RE: A petition has commenced on February 1, 2010 towards you and for action.

We the undersigned have become aware that Newfoundland & Labrador has not yet implemented a Bully Prevention Action Plan. Ontario and Alberta are the only two provinces so far that have this plan in effect. Do you not think it is time you came aboard to be the 3rd province in Canada to implement this plan? At this time we ask that you review and take this petition into consideration, as we do have a bully preventive action plan in our possession, and available to you for your ease of reference. We cannot change what has incurred in the past, but we certainly can make a difference moving forward in the future. All it takes is educating people about Bullying. You are the one person in such a position to do so, and with the power to put this forth.

We introverts are often misunderstood. We live in a very extraverted society. Help put an end to the negative stereotypes that are often put upon introverted and/or shy people. Please sign this petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/15/stop-discrimination-against-introverted-people Thank you!

Honorable Darin King I am at loss for words realy about the stories I am hearing regarding the bullying going on in the schools in Newfoundland.Stephenville is terrible, makes one shake their head.I am even hearing stories about teachers & principles bullying the students. Is there any investigation done on the teachers/principles?For students to be afraid of the people who are out there to teach them is a bit much, that in itself should say alot.I think cameras should be set up in the schools & as well as the school property as well as chaperones on the school buses.Does giving the bullys a few days off(suspension)realy help?I think not,the bullys are at home hanging out having fun, they go back to school bully again just to "get time off" again!!What does it have to take for this to end?A murder? a suicide? Please help those kids who are there to get an education, but all they are getting is bullied by the students/teachers.This has to end!!!Thank-you!

Bullying can only be stopped, if the teachers and students BOTH are aware that it's a problem, if the teachers are honestly looking out for it, and if the teachers ENCOURAGE the students to STOP BULLYING. That does not just mean .. the Bullies need to stop. That also means the by-standers need to TAKE A STAND, and the teachers and by-standers need to stick up for the student being bullied! I have 2 girls, one is 14 and the other is 12. Both have been 'agitated' when it comes to attending school this year (school year) because the teachers DO NOT acknowledge bullying to be what it really is. It does NOT have to be physical. Often ... Emotional and Verbal bullying has more extreme outcomes than physical. We don't know what the effects of emotional bullying is, sometimes, because we cannot read the minds of our children. If a child is PHYSICALLY bullied, it is more likely to be dealt with, more severely because we see it. It is the verbal, emotional and mental bullying that is harder to detect and which causes longer, more detrimental negative effects, than the physical, yet do not dismiss the physical. I'm just saying ... Students and Teachers and Parent Helpers and everybody in the schools and communities NEED TO BE AWARE OF THE BULLYING, of ALL sorts, and everybody NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING POSITIVE ABOUT IT TO PUT AN END TO IT!~!~~!!!

Kids should be taught at home and in school not to be a bully and treat others like they would like others to treat them.

i really think the schools falculty / counselors need to be more passionate about stoping this atrocity, but the sad fact is that you cannot learn or be taught concern, or emotion with a degree....you are born with it. In my opinion, that is allowing this to continue on a higher level. Teachers, conselors...you are our children's keepers when we are not present. Grab some compassion,,,,again, i cannot teach you that...you either have it or you don't. Sad reality is that this abuse becomes complacant in unconcerned minds.....you have RESPOSIBILTY outside of other people...STEP UP !!! The scars run deep, & long in children, & contunues to haunt throughout there whole life. Teachers / counselors...you drop the ball on a continued basis.....it is mostly your fault...& the truth may or may not hurt....cause you may think you are above that. Parents of bullies need to take the other RESPONSIBILTY....it is your fault as vwell...KARMA SUCKS.....sometimes....open your eyes...it is not fair. MEAN PEOPLE SUCK !!! I was bullied when I was in school over 25 years ago. One student even shot & killed a teacher at my high school. This behavior has got to stop, the bullies don't realize the impact they leave on the person they are bullying.

When bullying is not stopped in schools it progresses to the workplace. I have experienced it in many of the places I've worked including the federal government.

Contact the local news papers and tell them your story. the more of you doing this in a community, the better the word gets out. this is what i had to do to get a school to listen to me and my son.

my child is bullied every day he is bi-polar and gets bullied for this he cries every day does not want to go to school and repeats he wishes he was dead cause the kids make fun of him name calling he is labeled for his condition he is only 9 years old and hates school because of this, the school does not seem to look at this for how seriously if affects him and now he is acting out at school towards others with aggression and he repeats it is because every one is mean to him it is hard enough for any child with a disorder but to add being bullied to it will affect him for the rest of his life the schools need to listen to the parents and the child and stop making excuses because of lack of time and resources. We are moving away now in hope that another province and another school will be different and will not allow this to happen
