Milk pricing is based on a contrived, antiquated pricing system and our farmers are needlessly going bankrupt.
Cheap imported milk powder and milk protein concentrates (MPCs) are contributing to our country's dairy crisis. Big business dairy producers are buying "cheap" milk concentrates, driving down the domestic price paid to our farmers, and pocketing record profits. Our dairy farmers are being choked out and we're losing our farms.
Some milk protein concentrates are from China. Remember melamine tainted baby formula? Cheap does not necessarily equal safe.
Please sign our petition demanding:
- Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for dairy products;
- A floor for the price of milk to ensure a fresh local supply for consumers and appropriate compensation for our farmers;
- Immediate financial reparations for our NY family dairy farmers who have been and still are been paid 1970s prices at 2010 cost of living and who will simply go bankrupt if reparations are not made.
We, the undersigned, urge you to enact Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for dairy products; create a floor for the price of milk (Class 1, no less than $18.50) to ensure a fresh local supply for consumers and appropriate compensation for our farmers; and provide immediate financial reparations for our NY family dairy farmers who have been paid 1970s prices at 2010 cost of living.
We are losing our farms. We are consuming milk protein concentrates from China. We must not outsource our ability to feed ourselves. Please help us keep our milk 'local' and to keep our very viable family farms in business.
