Lucy the 33 year old elephant has been working at the Edmonton Valley zoo for almost 30 years.
Her zoo-mate Samantha was retired into a sanctuary for African elephants in California almost three years ago. Lucy can join Samantha in California.
Lucy can also retire into a sanctuary in Tennessee that has the perfect social setting and environment for Asian elephants just like her. Its time to say thank you for all the joy you brought to Edmonton and help her retire to this sanctuary.

To the Mayor and Members of Council City of Edmonton 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square Edmonton, Alberta CANADA T5J 2R7
Please make a grand gesture and give the old elephant lady her ticket to retirement at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennesee USA or the elephant sanctuary in California.
She has worked for the Edmonton Valley Zoo long enough, nearly 30 years.
She deserves it and there she will find her place among the other elephants and feel at home in a better setting.
She is still healthy enough to travel and many other elephants have had this chance and have been given this chance for a better life.
Let her go to Hohenwald or the elephant sanctuary in California, with a big thank you parade and help her settle in at the sanctuary with her own kind.
Edmonton is too cold for her as an elephant and as she gets older it will be worse for her to endure such cold.
Lucy is not in a habitat and she has worked long enough under such conditions.
We, as caring and concerned individuals wish to see that she is safely transported to her new home as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
Let Lucy go now and be thankful that she lasted this long.

Elephant Tears
by Taras Kazna
When the air cools off
And snow comes down,
The tears like gems
Fall on the ground.
She is the main attraction
in the Edmonton zoo
like a circus clown
that blows in a kazoo.
She has been alone
for many years.
No sounds of others
come to her ears.
Humans decide
Lucy's Fate.
She has no sisters.
She has no mate.
Humans say they care
about her health,
but the loneliness comes
like they haven't felt.
If she could speak,
what would she say
of being alone
day after day?
Do humans know
how she feels?
Can they read her dreams
about the hills
where the grass is growing
all year round?
Instead of cement
she walks on the ground
and to cool off
she would flap her ears.
Instead of humans
she plays with her peers.
Dusting with sand
is her daily task,
watching bulls on the prowl
with their smell of musk,
the shade of the trees
in the midday sun,
the youngsters that feel
wind on the run,
and a call of the leader
To follow the trail
smell of the grass,
hay from a bale.
The herd would understand
the sounds she makes.
Fresh water that runs
from the emerald lakes
and the safety she'd feel
among her peers,
but instead she is crying elephant tears
And she listens to traffic
surrounding the zoo,
horns of the cars
like some broken kazoo
that cuts like a knife
on her elephant ears.
if only humans
could see her tears.

What a shame that petitions and protests are needed in order to persuade the people entrusted with the care of zoo animal to do the humane and decent thing.
