TO ALL NURSES Many years ago in California, an LVN/LPN could challenge the Board of Registered Nurses for examination. That has been outlawed. Nurses from overseas are now being sponsored by corporations thus limiting our prospects. With the Nursing shortage, lets petition our States to allow for LVN/LPN's to "CHALLENGE" the RN Board of Nursing. Experience matters, I believe LN/LPN's with 10 plus years experience should be granted this opportunity. It will help stop the Nursing shortage and open up the local colleges and Universities all over. Please sign the petition if you agree, I will then forward to our State representatives!!! Thank You and keep up the "GREAT" work!!!!A fellow Nurse

I've been an Emergency room nurse and Cardiac nurse for 11 years and agree with the above statement that nurses from overseas for the most part speak very limited English, with limited skills are taking the positions of some very capable intelligent LVN's/LPN's. I wish for a chance to better the State of California's nursing shortage with competent nurses in this nursing crisis. Thank You

I agree with this idea fully. I believe that nursing is not about the challenge of the classes but the challenge of the skills. If you have over 10 years experience as a LVN you are should be qualified to take the RN boards.

I would love to get into a program for LVN to RN, but the programs have a long waiting list. Please consider this. A lot of LVN know more than RN because of experience, if thay could pass the board why not make them a RN?

Have been LVN since 1981, am IV certified, BLS,ACLS,and PALS. After 20 years on Med/Surg, I went to Telemetry, ICU, and the past 7 yrs in ER. The State of California allows foreign nurses to take the exam here, though there has been controversy for years regarding the validity of those who are licensed in another country. In one country whose nurses come to the US regularly, the exam was provided prior to the exam, leaving those who were substandard, to cheat on the exam and pass, even though they were incompetent.
I see no problem with qualified LVNs challenging the RN boards if they have ten years experience.
Have seen alot of incompetent RNs through the years, making me wonder who they paid off to get their license?????
Let's get serious and put this out there in more public places, such as twitter, facebook, etc......

I have been an LVN in california since challenging the board upon discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1970. Little did I know that I would be limited to practicing only in California, as that was not told to us. I have 37 years of nursing experience in E.R., Surgery, Occupational Health, with the last 25 years as a school nurse in a private high school. I have been looking for a new position in order to recover from lost income in the financial disaster we are now living through. I was very disillusioned to find that 95 percent of advertised jobs are in Home Health or SNF. It is about time that RN politics and control issues stop controlling what LVN's have proven over many years that they are very qualified to perform. Even in the nursing shortage, the jobs are numerous, but the work provides low pay and little use of your training and experience. Please grant the right of challenge to the RN board once and for all.

I HAVE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL LOCALLY WORKING AS AN LVN FOR MAXIM HEALTHCARE REGISTRY, WHEREIN I HAVE GAINED ALOT OF EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AND I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PUT IT TO WORK AND BE COMPENSATED ACCORDINGLY BY BEING ALLOWED TO CHALLENGE THE RN BOARDS. Let's use the resources that we have in the LVN's.
U.S LVN's should be first choice. Let's put our own people to work

I am a big believer that LVN's should be able to challenge the boards afterall what is it that your worried about? they'd pass. The RN exam is challenging in it's self. If with experance and years of first hand knowledge an LVN is able to pass, why not allow it. I can tell you that I work in an emergency room and I am an LVN. There are many times that I have had the chief of my ER along with other Doctors say that the two LVN's are stronger nurses then some of the RNs and he feels safer having one of us along his and the patient's side. That speaks volumes!!!!! After all isn't this what it's about, patients safety! Let's say you or your loved one was the patient in the bed with a life threatening situation wouldn't you want the strongers nurse at your bedside? To not give that chance to some equally amazing and strong LVN's seem's misguided and unfortunate.

I feel LVN's should be able to challenge the RN boards...lots of us have as much if not more experience as the RN's...in many cases the RN's have turned to me for advice and training. I feel this would be a benefit for California with the nursing shortage.

LVNs have extensive experience and have been held accountable for a high level of patient care directed by RNs. If they can challenge and pass the exam, why are we holding them back? Give them the opportunity.

Yes, instead of hiring more foreign workers, why not use nurses that already have enough experience as an RN or more, to BECOME an RN. Leaves more jobs for Americans

I have been an LPN for 22 years, with the current state of the Nursing profession I think that ALL states should consider allowing LPN's with 10+ years experience boards. I like many others have a very diverse background, including certifications in IV Therapy and Wound Care Certified. There are many of us that have more than it takes to be an RN, especially a new grad. Lets make this happen, not just for us but the patients as well.

i support this petition. i am an lvn working in a snf and i have to say that lvn's should be given the chance to sit and challege the rn exam. together with their academic/ nursing training plus their skills that are already sharpened by time and years of experience in the field, they too should be given the right and opportunity. now that nurses are in-demand, private schools are taking advantage of those who wish to obtain their degrees. for you to become an rn, you would first start living and breathing in debt as the tuition is exaggerated. with students and lvn's pursuing the rn degree, instead of advancing, they are actually held back because of this so-called waiting list.
lvn's should earn the right to challenge the rn boards. this would help eradicate nursing shortage. america should use its own manpower instead of importing. california should help its own nurses!

If the Baord for LVN allows for a CNA to challenge the
boards then the lvn with 10+ years should be allowed to
challenge the RN boards.

Many LVN programs are as intense, have as many prerequistits and have just as many clinical hours as RN programs. Let's finially make this fair....If the LVN has the experiance and skills, let them sit for the RN boards!

I have found myself in the position of having to train many new (and old) RNs on how to do this proceedure or why that order is wrong. I resent that my knowledge is wasted while those with less practical knowledge are my supervisor. I dont mind helping my fellow nurses to improve but I do mind having to show "a higher grade nurse" how to be one.

I have been a LPN for over 15 years, and have worked in a hospital with my own patient load. I have worked on med surg, peds surg, tele, chemo patients i have done it all.
By allowing the lpn with enough experience to challenge the board would help solve the nursings shortage. we work side by side with the rn and we have learned our job well.long years ago there was only on the job training.

I am an LVN for 17 years. I have execellent knowledge in the nursing field. I am confident if given the opportunity to challenge the RN board exam, I will pass. I have tried returning back to school to finish my Rn but, the wait lists for the classes to take are outrageous and very discouraging. I have confident that, someday the LVN will be given the opportunity to challenge the Rn exam, the same opportunity the CNA are given to challenge the the LVN exam.

UNBELIEVABLE THE WAY THAT AN LVN WITH 10+ YEARS CANNOT CHALLENGE THE BOARDS AND PROVE THEMSELVES TO BE COMPETENT AND CAPABLE RNS WITH YEARS OF NURSING EXPERIENCE UNDER THEIR BELT ?? I THOUGHT PATIENT CARE WAS WHAT NURSES STRIVED FOR MOST?? WHY DO THESE DINOSAURS WHO SAY THEY CARE MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR LVN'S TO ADVANCE IN THIS STATE?? LET'S PROPOSE A NEW BILL AND SEE WHO OPPOSES IT SO WE CAN SEE HOW MANY DINOSAURS WE GOT LEFT!
