Make comprehensive sex education mandatory in Arkansas' public schools

Make comprehensive sex education mandatory in Arkansas' public schools

Target:
Arkansas' legislators and congressmen
Sponsored by:
Teen pregnancy is a nationwide problem that is on the rise.  In 2006, for every 1000 pregnancies in Arkansas, 62.3 were to girls aged 15-19.  In 2004, "teen childbearing (teens 19 and younger) in Arkansas cost taxpayers (federal, state, and local) at least $112 million" (www.thenationalcampaign.org).  Studies have shown that "curriculum-based education that usually encourages both abstinence and contraceptive use" works.  "These programs are generally offered as part of regular school classes or as part of after-school programs either on school grounds or in community centers." (www.thenationalcampaign.org)  So why aren't public schools in Arkansas providing Arkansas teens with the education they need in order to make better decisions?  Sign this petition to let our lawmakers know that something needs to be done about teen pregnancy in Arkansas -- make comprehensive sex education mandatory in Arkansas' public schools.

We the undersigned want comprehensive sex education to be made mandatory in Arkansas' public schools.  Teen pregnancy costs tax payers money, and abstinence-only programs are NOT working.  Please help decrease the number of babies born to teenage mothers, and help prevent the spread of STD's -- make comprehensive sex education mandatory in Arkansas' public schools.

Thank you for your attention regarding this important and pressing matter.

It's obvious that teaching "abstinence only" doesn't work. Isn't it time to try something new?

The more we educate teens about real, effective choices, the more impact we will make against teen pregnancy and the spread of STDs.
