Make JAI a Town Sponsored Community Center

We, the undersigned residents of HUFSD, oppose the plan to create a districtwide 6th Grade Center at Jack Abrams Intermediate School.  This plan was voted on without sufficient community notice or input.  This plan still puts children in the immediate vicinity of an area plagued by ongoing violence and shootings.  We implore our school district trustees, who have been entrusted by the New York State Board of Regents, to uphold their responsibility and obligation to ensure a safe education for all children in HUFSD by relocating the remaining 6th grade children by September of 2010. We demand and deserve resolutions that accomplish both safety and educational excellence for all children in HUFSD.  We respectfully request that you adopt one of the following solutions for September 2010.
Solution 1:
Have our four primary schools follow a K-4 configuration.  Add four portable classrooms to Flower Hill Primary and four portable classrooms to Washington Primary to house electives and address capacity.  Southdown and Jefferson will remain unchanged.  Release leftover unused capital reserve funds to pay for the above eight portables.  Have Woodhull Intermediate house all 5th and 6th grade students in the district with the cost of the three portables already in place in the budget.  This solution is extremely cost effective, addresses capacity, education and above all safety for September of 2010. Exact costs can be referenced separately (additional cost savings of approximately $600,000 in transportation)  Plan for permanent building using the above configuration.
Solution 2
Make Touro the 6h Grade Center.  Use minimal leftover capital reserve funds for any updates and improvements needed to make the space ready for September of 2010 and beyond.

These solutions include a community center to be located at the current JAI facility which will have a positive impact on the entire community.  Mr. Frank Petrone, Town Supervisor, has publicly stated there is a vital need for a community center which will serve the HUFSD community and the greater community. He has expressed his interest in working with the HUFSD to utilize the JAI facility to develop a community center should the building become available.  The community center will play a significant role in the town's continued revitalization efforts of Huntington Station.  The JAI location is perfectly suited to meet the needs of all residents of Huntington and represents a true collaboration beteen the Town and School Board. The newly proposed location for the JAI 6th Grade Center, combined with a 21st century community center, create a true and much needed "Anchor" in Huntington Station.  The community center will provide a rich breath of activities which complement school programs and athletic interests for all families.  All HUFSD offices will remain at Jack Abrams Intermediate.

We, the residents of HUFSD, demand that the Board of Education immediately adopt and implement one of the two solutions listed for September of 2010.  This implemention not only focuses on the safety and education of all children in the district, but addresses the needs of our entire community.
