I recently finished reading a book called Energy Victory by Robert Zubrin. The book goes into depth about how the US can achieve energy independence by utilizing ethanol and methanol as liquid fuels while capturing energy using other alternative methods like wind, solar and nuclear. The cornerstone of his idea is to make Congress pass a bill mandating all vehicles be flex fuel (able to run on ethanol and methanol along with gasoline) and not a just a mixture like E85 or E15 (Ethanol 85% Gasoline 15%, Ethanol 15% Gasoline 85%).
Robert Zubrin is a aerospace engineer and author who holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester (1974), and a masters degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics, a masters degree in Nuclear Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering %u2014 all from the University of Washington. He recently has become more involved in the topic of energy security after publishing a number of articles on the subject in the pass couple of years.
Robert Zubrin is not the first or only person to support or think of this idea. Joe Biden also has touted a Energy Security platform that vowed to "Increase the percentage of Flex Fuel cars produced each year so that, by 2016, all cars marketed in the U.S. will be able to run on alternative fuels AND gasoline".
This petition has been created to spread awareness of the issue that oil bought in the Middle East primarily funds fanatical Islam and terrorism. By relying more on domestic resources and less on foreign oil, the US can better handle regional issues in the Middle East that impact global society while helping to prevent the effects of burning fossil fuels on the environment.
Goals: Congress passes a bill mandating all Car companies to manufacture cars with systems that can consume methanol and ethanol along with gasoline.

This is one solution to our energy crisis that relies on available technology.

Increasing the availability of alternative fuels not only reduces dependence on oil, but it creates market competition to reduce the price of oil and gas. This is VITAL for economic and national security.

If a Congressman or representative does not support this I'd like to know exactly why.
Why not support Ethanol at $1.50 a gallon for example? And it's something that can run cars. And it can be made HERE in the U.S.A. by mid-level entrepreneurs and in small towns instead of overseas.
Why support something that enables others more control? Why give in to OPEC and oil dependency. Turn the tables. Get off oil. Get onto something else.
Drive cars as always. It's a simple shift.
This bill is the key.

The only way to bring oil prices down is through competition. Flex Fuel Vehicles now.

I think this bill would be an important first step in achieving energy independence for the US.

If we continue on the path we are on we will not only use up the nateral, non-renewable resources, but be completely out of luck, so to speak, when it comes to changing all of our transportation methods over to a renewable fuel. Not to mention the fact that we are paying the countries who have done things to devastate our own.

Making all cars have the ability to "Flex Fuel" only makes sense. To not do it is to cut off your nose to spite your face. No matter what happens, this is a hedge against a fuel crisis. And one is coming, so we better get ready!
