It's time to move Maryland out of the stone age. I should be able to purchase beer/wine over the internet, the phone, and in my local grocery or convienience store. Stop protecting the distributors and liquor stores, they will be fine and adapt accordingly. FREE THE MARKET

I visited a Maryland winery last weekend and requested that they ship a case of wine to a friend of mine in New York. I was told that it was not legal due to Maryland's law not allowing other states' wines to be shipped here. I am sure that the $200 sale to the winery would have been welcomed. It is past time to change this 50 year+ law. Let's join the majority of the other states and allow limited wine volumes to be shipped into Maryland,

This is simple. Please allow Marylanders the freedom of choice, the freedom of unrestricted commerce, and the freedom to better support local business.

We import milk from other states, why not wine? Beer from other states, why not wine? Bourbon from other states, why not wine?

We moved to Maryland from a state that did allow direct wine shipping, and we used to order several cases per year. It was a secure and efficient service, which we wish we could still enjoy here in Maryland.

This must be an old law; really, how can you NOT allow wine shipments to particular states??? Are Maryland-ers somehow not responsible enough to have wine shipped to their homes while the people of other states are?

Banning shipments of alcohol in Maryland suggests that lawmakers think this state's residents are children, irresponsible and incapable of adult functioning. As an avid wine consumer and a fan of local wineries, I stand ready to add significant income to the state's wineries with regular purchases.

As an occasional wine drinker, it is rediculous that residents of maryland cannot have wine shipped to their homes. Many other states allow for this practice. Please change this outdated and archaic law, so tax-paying, law abiding citizens may enjoy wine purchases just as residents of other states.

I find it ridiculous that I can't ship my daughter the bottle of wine bought for her when she was here visiting. She had no room in her suitcase, and so now the bottle just sits here.......

As an occasional wine drinker, I find this law absurd and archaic. As a consumer I regularly purchase some very fine Maryland wines, and I find it hard to believe that people in other states cannot have this wine shipped to them! I also believe that the amount of wine that would be shipped here from other states would be minimal at best. I regularly suppport my local wine/beer store, but how nice it would be to order something you can't get at your local store.

Virtually everybody, businesses and individuals, benefit from freedom of commerce. Please change Maryland's laws to bring us into the 21st Century. There is no risk to underage purchasers because shippers require signature and proof of age. Wine is an agricultural product, intended to be enjoyed with food, hence the choices should be a free as our food is.

This is an important cause and I feel one that Maryland should repeal. I should freely be able to buy my wine where I choose. It would only help the state deficit.

When I visit wineries in California, I would like to be able to ship some wine to my home in Maryland. Trying to take it on the airplane is not an option since I usually travel with only a carry-on suitcase.

If anything, allowing the personal import and export of wine would increase sales and encourage economic growth.

Not only can I not have wine from other states sent to my home, friends can't have local Maryland wine sent to them in other states! The state could have increased revenue by allowing this to happen.

I like to try different wines and wineries when I travel. Surely having a few bottles a year shipped to my home is not an economic threat to local distributors and liquor stores.

Allowing shipping of alcoholic beverages into Maryland is a win-win for the state and the consumer. The shipping of alcoholic beverages into Maryland in no way adversely impacts the health and safety of Maryland citizens with the proper controls in place.

As an amateur winemaker for over 30 years and a wine enthusiast for longer, I find the laws of Maryland on securing interstate wines abominable, to say the least. It is high time that we allow the consumer to have their rightfull place as the ultimate purchaser and decision maker in this process.

Dear Representative: I am an avid wine consumer and think that it is archaic how wine distribution is controlled in Maryland. These laws serve the oligopoly of wine distributors and their profits. It smacks of old fashioned Maryland "cronyism". Why should the consuming public not be afforded the choices of all of the wines that the United States produces? The argument that the opposition has put forth about protecting against underage drinking is specious. There are proven ways in the delivery system to require signature and identification at time of delivery. I find it laughable that they are using this argument...when the shipping cost alone for this method of delivery is approximately $5-6 per bottle. What person believes that a teen who wants a party is going to A) anticipate the need 7-10 days ahead, and B) be willing to spring for the extra shipping that this delivery method entails? It is a smoke screen to protect the special interests of this small group of distributors at the expense of both consumers and local wine retailers. The majority of the state's residents would benefit from such a change in the law. I also know that the huge donations to campaign funds of our elected officials has previously protected this small group of distributors. I believe that my elected official should vote based on the best choices for the citizens of Maryland and should not be "bullied" by this small but powerful oligopoly. I strongly urge you to vote with the Maryland electorate in mind and not these special interests. Lindsay Flower

The only opponents to supporting legalization of Maryland direct wine shipping legistlation are those groups and inviduals who fear competition that would naturally flow from consumer choice. There is no rational reason to oppose the legalization of direct shipping to or from Maryland.

Let's give everyone a fair chance to enjoy their favorite Maryland beverages, and give a boost to the hard working small businesses who make great beer and wine in Maryland. There is no good excuse to prohibit direct wine and beer shipments.

As a wine buyer for a restaurant in DC I think that it would serve economy of the state of Maryland well to be able to ship wine directly to Maryland, Virginina and DC address. I support the passge of consumer direct wine ship legislation.
