McCoy Harriet Pedestrian Crossing

Target:
Implement a safer crosswalk

Dear Campbell City Council,

As some of you may have heard the crash on Tuesday, 10/27/09 at 1:55pm on the crosswalk on the corner of McCoy and Harriet involved a Forest Hill second grader (Campbell Union School District).
We, the undersigned, realize that pedestrian crossing on the McCoy and Harriet Avenue is a serious issue in our community and believe that no one else should get hurt for walking to school.

We call on the Campbell city council and community leaders to help act on this issue and help us solve it, either by placing a crossing guard or installing flashing pedestrian or other possible means.

Thanks for your help,
Forest Hill Elementary Community(Raha Zandifar)

At a minimum, a flashing light crosswalk could be installed, similar to the crosswalk on Pollard Rd near Jack Fisher Park.

Is their a crosswalk criteria with the City of Campbell that is mandatory for all Campbell Union School District Schools' Safety? If not, implementation of safer crosswalks district-wide should be mandatory for the safety of all our children. Ange E. Michalski Campbell Resident

Hello, My family lived on Weston Drive since 1961 around the corner from the intersection that this happened. It has always been a tough intersection to cross and people driving fast on Harriet. Even when I was young it was scarry to cross here even with a cross walk. Please consider a street light here....

The danger at this intersection appears to have increased with the schools that the families commute between all beginning and ending within minutes of each other.

I have been a personal witness to the crazy driving when I take my child to school. I have seen so many times when people are trying to cross and cars will not stop. I also have seen many very close accidents including 3 actual accidents in the past year alone. What I would like to know is... why are there two crossing guards on one street, one on the other side and NONE at the big dangerous street.

This incident, being so close to our home, has really placed an impact of fear on us. Drivers from both directions go way too fast and I don't think they take the crossing seriously. Flashing lights and a sign stating it is the law to stop for pedestrians would surely help.

I live in the back of this intersection and can hear car speeding by. Every morning, it would take me a long time just to be able to make a left turn from McCoy as well as Keith as cars are speeding by from both direction. I have a baby in the car and recently have been forced to use alternative route because I'm worried that I may get hit one of these day. Please help make this intersection safe for pedestrian as well as drivers trying to make a left turn. San Thomas Park is close by and there are lots of family with kids who would like to feel safe to take their kids to the park.

That intersection is particularly dangerous because cars tend to speed down that street on their way to Westmont or Campbell Ave. It is also hard to see pedestrians when cars are waiting to turn right. I would like to see some safety improvements at that intersection.

As a Forest Hill parent and a physician in the Campbell community, I am deeply concerned about this risky intersection, especially in light of the recent accident that occurred there. I have also witnessed a couple of "near-misses" at that intersection. Just about 2 hours ago, I saw a car narrowly miss a teenager crossing at that intersection who was wearing headphones and not paying attention. Both the driver of the car and the pedestrian seemed startled when they realized that they hadn't seen each other until it was almost too late. I urge you to please consider some safer alternatives for this intersection. The health and safety of our community's children are at risk.

The street is too fast and under patroled to not have some form of control in all directions either light or stop sign

I would like to see a crosswalk that lights up at McCoy and Harriet, like the ones at Westmont Ave. Thank you.

We have been very concerned about this intersection for several years as it is an extremely busy intersection with pedestrians, cyclists, automobiles, a turn, and streets very close allowing additional automobiles, pedestrians, and cyclists to pull out impairing others vision and jeopardizing everyone's safety. Just recently a young boy and his grandfather were hit there and we are so worried there could easily be an accidental fatality soon.
