Flight 191 seconds before it crashed, killing 273 people.

Memorial Dedicated to The Victims of AA Flight 191

Target:
American Airlines,  Mayor Richard Daley
Sponsored by:
May 25, 2009 is the 30th  anniversary of the Crash of American Airlines Flight # 191.  Flight 191 plummeted to the ground shortly after takeoff from O'Hare when one of the engines flew off, severing the hydraulic system, rendering the plane unable to stop its plunge to the ground.  On that tragic day, 271 passengers and crew on the plane, and two people on the ground were killed in the ensuing explosion.  This crash  remains the single worst aviation crash in US history.  Yet to this day, there is no memorial site commemorating the lives of the 273 people who perished that Memorial Day weekend.
We respectfully ask the State of Illinois, the cities of Chicago and Des Plaines, and American Airlines to embrace our efforts to erect a memorial honoring those who died on that horrific day.

I was in high school when this terrible accident occurred. I lived in Evanston with my parents and we could see the plume of dark smoke from our window. I am disappointed to learn there is no memorial after all this time. I feel it is important to dedicate some type of memorial to remember those lost and those touched by this.

My only Uncle was on flight AA191 and he never got to know the son he left behind and his son grew up without his father. My cousin was only a couple years old at the time. My Grandmother died recently and everyday of her life since the crash she would cry because her only son died on that plane. The people on this flight and their family’s deserve the recognition of what happened that day and in my opinion it is long over do.

My husband's father was killed in this crash and it is an unconscionable tragedy that American Airlines has yet to erect a memorial to provide some sense of closure and remembrance to him and the hundreds of others that lost loved ones that day.

I was 2 years old when my father was killed on this flight coming back to L.A. from a business trip he had to go to in Chicago. It has haunted me, my mother and our entire family for over 30 years now. Creating a memorial so that the surviving family members of this horrendous event can finally get some closure is the least that American Airlines can do after their negligence and greed that caused this crash to occur in the first place!

My father was aboard. I was 5 and my sister was 3. Been to Chicago a few time to visit family in past. Never went here as it didn't seem there was anything to see. Might be different if there was a memorial or something to view and try to help with the closure. 30 years past, and you get on with your life, but never really get over growing up without a dad. Have wife and kids now. One son of my own. Never take them for granted. I love them everyday knowing from this tragedy we might not be here tommorrow. I was lucky to have some memories with him, but my sister has to rely on stories from family. Think this memorial would be good. I saw the special on history channel last year. Even that helped knowing I was not alone in still searching for answers and being upset, seeing other families interviewed on it. Everyone had their own unique story of their family member. I was just waiting for my dad to come home from a buisness trip with my toy airplane he promised to bring if I was good and behaved while he was gone. Of all things to ask for, an airplane. Good luck on your endevor to get the memorial. I will keep all you families in my prayers.

Please give them a memorial. What a tragic day. I know someone who had family on that plane. It would mean more than you could possibly imagine to them. Thank you.

I am acquaintances with someone who had his grandparents on this aircraft. I flew for 9 years with Continental Airlines as a flight attendant, and anytime this kind of thing happens it's a national tragedy. My heart goes out to the surviving family members. Not only my friend, for to those who also suffered the same loss. Why can't a memorial out of respect for these families be put into place? A memorial is most appropriate to honor the who 271 passengers and crew who perished in this accident.

It is unbelievable that the worst aviation accident in US history, that took the lives of 100's, who were near and dear to 1000's still hasn't been giving the respect and regard it deserves.

Growing up in Bensenville planes went over my house every day. we were downtown in chicago that afternoon visiting museums and shedd aquarium. we were in union station waiting for our train when we heard the plane crashed.the station was frantic and people were cramming all the phone booths tring to find out who was on the plane. what happened how bad was it.were houses destroyed??? no one knew.people cried in the station and the ride home on the milwaukee road was deadly silent.when ew got off the train at bensenville station a haze could still be seen and a strange scent could be smelled.my father ,a vietnam vet, had already refused to fly and i had never been on an airplane.my mother read the paper the next day along with a neighbor and cried. i would look at every plane in the sky flying over my house in bensenville and every now and then i would see a plane make a hard turn and ask myself...is he crashing?? that day never left me 30 years later.it to me is my own 9/11 or kennedy assasination.ovr 250 people died that day in one single spot. a memorial should be erected to those poor people. you can only imagine the shear terror they must have endured in thier last few moments. not to mention all the people on the ground in rescue crews witnessess and people living near by who were effected by that crash and still remember it and pray for the poor victims 30 years later. may God bless them all

Today is August 31, 2009 and back on this day in 1986 in the city of Cerritos, Ca there was a mid air collision between an AeroMexico DC9 and a Piper airplane. The AeroMexico jet crashed into a neighborhood killing 64 on the plane and 15 on the ground. The Piper crashed at a nearby school killing 3 on the plane. There is a beautiful monument at the Cerritos Library in an area called the Cerritos Sculpture Garden. You can Google it to see what it looks like. It lists everyone on the planes and everyone on the ground that were killed on August 31, 1986. American Airlines flight 191 should have a monument. It doesn't need to be at the sight of the crash, but it should be nearby.

Even though I was only 9 years old when this happened I do remember it. The picture of Flight 191 taken right before it went down is an image that has stayed in my mind ever since. It's an image that has always haunted me. I think the families and friends of the victims deserve a memorial for their loved ones.
