Merit Pay for Politicians

  • by: Concerned Constituents
  • recipient: Federal and State elected officials serving in the legislative and executive branches
Because only good public servants deserve taxpayer dollars, it is time for state and federal legislators as well as governors and the president to be accountable to their constituents.   Furthermore, merit pay measured through data will lessen the unabated power of lobbyists, interest groups, and big business. Elected officials need to be accountable to the people.

These elected officials shall receive bonuses/salary supplements based on their performance as measured on an annual, independently administered survey. Only those deemed highly effective by at least 51% of at least 90% of constituent responses will receive any bonus/supplement.

Initial base pay for every legislator would be decreased by 40% to fund the proposal. No politician's pay would be tied to the time in office, advanced degrees, district population, additional monies spent on travel or materials, and/or additional service on committees. Each politician would be required to contribute a minimum of 5% to their retirement and would only earn retirement benefits that were no more than 48% of the five highest years.

Additionally,  an legislator or executive that fails to receive highly effective surveys within the first two terms are no longer eligible to run for any political office at any time.
