Michigan Needs An Animal Abuser Registry

New York's Suffolk County recently became the first county in America to create an animal abuser registry. People convicted of animal abuse now have to submit their name, address and photograph to the registry for five years as well as pay an annual fee that will maintain the registry on a public website.

Unfortunately, animal abuse is a worldwide problem and there need to be more measures to protect those who need us to be their voice. More often than not, animal abuse is just the tip of the iceberg and leads to other violent crimes. A study by The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence showed that 85.4 percent of women and 63.0 percent of children reported incidents of pet abuse after arriving at domestic violence shelters.

Animals are living, breathing creatures who deserve the same amount of respect as any human. Urge Michigan legislators to initiate an animal abuse registry for the entire state of Michigan.
We The Undersigned,

Urge you to consider our position on the matter of Animal Abusers

Suffolk County in New York recently became the first county in America to create an animal abuser registry. People convicted of animal abuse must now submit their name, address and photograph to the registry for five years as well as pay an annual fee that will maintain the registry on a public website.

Animal abuse is a serious offense linked to other violent crimes, such as domestic abuse. A study by The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence showed that 85.4 percent of women and 63.0 percent of children reported incidents of pet abuse after arriving at domestic violence shelters, and the Chicago Police Department's Domestic Violence Program found that out of the criminal histories of animal fighting and animal abuse arrestees for 2000-2001, approximately 30 percent also had domestic violence charges on their records.

Day after day, we see on the television and in the newspapers stories of animals who have suffered and/or died at the hands of a callous and uncaring individual. And for what? Animals feel the same pain and suffer the same as any human. It is time we step up and doing more than what is being done for the animals we share our lives with.

For the safety of Michigan communities along with the innocent animals that depend on us to be their voice, I urge you to support the creation and enforcement of an animal abuser registry for the state of Michigan.

Thank You for your time and consideration of this matter.
