mirena IUD

Mirena Users Have a Right to Complete Information

Target:
US Food and Drug Administration
Sponsored by:

Women are reporting numerous, often debilitating healthcare problems after receiving the Mirena implant.  Most were totally unaware of these potential complications until after the Mirena was inserted and they became sick. Many others are suffering, and have no idea that Mirena is the cause.

Mirena is an IUD used to prevent pregnancy.  Its active ingredient is Levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin (hormone).  Side effect to this hormone are numerous and well documented.

The manufactures of Mirena, Bayer Healthcare, includes most of these side effect only in the physician insert (many adverse reactions are yet to be reported even there).  The patient insert, however, contains only the most life threatening complications.  Physicians are not providing patients with this information and too often, women are told that there are no side effects.  Clearly, this is not the case.

The intention of this petition is to ensure all Mirena users, both potential and current, receive a full list of the adverse reactions associated with the use of Mirena.  Not only do they have a right to make informed choices about their birth control, but they also require this information, so that when side effects arise, they are able to be properly diagnosed.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request the U.S. Food and Drug administration do the following in regard to the Mirena IUD birth control:

1) Require the manufacturer of the Mirena UID, (Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals), to revise the patient information for this device to include all potential Mirena side effects currently listed only in the physician information portion of the label.

2) Require all medical practitioners inserting the Mirena to provide the patient with this information BEFORE the Mirena is inserted.

3) Require all medical practitioners to forward this updated information, along with an explanation of the changes, to all Patients for which they have prescribed/inserted the Mirena.

4) Recommend investigation into the additional temporary and long term side effects being reported (as outlined here) that are not currently mentioned in either the doctor or patient information for the Mirena device.

Many women are reporting numerous, often debilitating healthcare problems after receiving the Mirena implant.  Most are unaware of the potential for complications before the Mirena is inserted and have no idea that Mirena is the cause when they become sick.

The patient information for the device contains warnings for the following side effects ONLY:

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infection, embedment, perforation, discomfort during placement, expulsion, missed menstrual periods, changes in bleeding, ovarian cysts.

This is the only "adverse reaction" information the patient will typically receive.

The following adverse reactions appear ONLY on the physician information for the Mirena (per the official physician information):

abdominal/pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, nausea, headache, nervousness, vulvovaginitis, dysmerorrhea (cramps), back pain, weight increase, breast pain/tenderness, acne, decreased libido, depressed mood, cervicitis (vaginal infection), hypertension, migraine, vomiting, anemia, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), alopecia (hair loss), eczema, pruritus (itchiness), rash, urticaria (hives), abdominal distension, altered mood, hirsutism (abnormal hair growth), edema (swelling).

Although doctors are instructed to share this information with the patient, they often do not.  In many cases, even when specifically asked, doctors are denying a possible link between Mirena and these symptoms. Patients are consistently told there are "no side effects," and that the synthetic hormone (levonorgestrel) contained in the mirena cannot be harmful because the hormone release is localized to the uterus.

The reluctance of doctors to acknowledge the many possible adverse reactions to the Mirena, including the ones documented by the manufacturer, suggests that they are alarmingly ill-informed or purposely obtuse--resulting in prolonged patient suffering and extensive medical expenses while seeking diagnosis/treatment of Mirena-related issues.

In addition, Mirena users are reporting additional common side effects that are not documented in any of the Mirena information provided by the manufacturer.

These include, but are not limited to:

anxiety, mental fog, double-vision, tinnitus, appetite increase, constipation, flatulence, polyuria (frequent urination),chest pain/heart palpitations, shortness of breath, bronchitis, fatigue/drowsiness, fainting, loss of nerve sensation/tingling in extremities, tremor, weight loss, insomnia,  cold intolerance, thyroid dysfunction, nonpuerperal lactation.

Patients have the right to make informed decisions regarding the use of the Mirena device. To do so, they are reliant on their doctors for full disclosure of potential risks/side effects as provided by the manufacturer.  Doctors are responsible for understanding these risks, and properly diagnosing and treating side effects when they occur.

Since patients are NOT currently receiving appropriate counseling regarding the Mirena device/Levonorgestrel, or treatment and diagnosis for the resultant adverse effects, we ask that the FDA consider the above changes to prevent further debilitation, suffering and expense on the part of women using this device.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

I think it is very important that ALL side effects are disclosed to women who are considering using the Mirena. I have had the Mirena for 10 months and have been having hair loss for months now. I didn't realize that my hair loss was related to the Mirena since I was not told that hair loss was a possible side effect. By chance, I happened to do a search on the internet to see if any other women were having hair loss who had the Mirena. I was surprised to see how many women have gone through the same thing, yet I was not told about this side effect. I have made an appointment to get the Mirena removed.

I had severe postpartum depression depression following my pregnancy. I was recovering and beginning to enjoy motherhood for the first time and after recommendations from my doctor decided to get a Mirena. From then on my recovery spiralled downward. Not only did I experience severe acne, cramping, fatigue, constant bleeding but my mood swings and emotional deteriorated. Instead of enjoying my daughter, I was unable to stabalize and my depression worsened. After much therapy, multiple doctor's visits and many prescriptions that caused havic on my body and family life, I had the Mirena removed an almost instantly felt better. My OB GYN consistently maintained that the Mirena had nothing to do with my symptons as it is not "systemically absorbed.

I have mirena almost two years and had a lot of problems at first and still have them now I have pain a lot and can't really have sex with my husband because he gets poked and it hurts too bad. I bleed a lot sometimes and other times not much. I'm very sick before, during and after my period. I've been thinking about getting it removed but don't want another baby right now and I can't take pills or shots.

This is important to me because i got the marina in October 2003. and i have been on several depression medications, i'v had mood swings, I have also have several hot spells that involve dizziness and i end up fainting. all of these symptoms plus many more have effected my job, my social life, my relationship with my children, husband, and other family members. and now that i'm trying to get it removed the doctors say they can't find the strings to take it out and i have to have surgury and since i have no insurance i have to pay for all of this out of pocket which just causes more undue stress.

I had the Mirena inserted 2 years ago. I immediately gained 20 lbs in 6 months. I am eating less and working out more with no weight loss. I have night sweats and migraines for the first time ever. I'm not sure about getting the Mirena removed, as I'm terrified of getting pregnant again (3 kids in 4 years) by using other forms of BC but disappointed that I didn't know about these side effects before making my choice.

I have had the mirina for 5 months and already lost 40%-50% of my hair. I thought I had a thyroid problem. I wish hair loss would have been listed in the side effects, so I could have known what the hair loss was sooner.

I had the Mirena IUD place in April of 2008, a few weeks ago I was suffering from severe pain in my right lower abdomen. I went to the doctor and after several tests, an ultrasound, x-ray, and an exam, I was informed that my IUD had completely preforated through my uterus and was sitting on my lower intestine. I went in for surgery and had the IUD removed, but this has been a huge upset in my life and I feel that Mirena is responsible for this.

I had the Mirena put in when my son was 8 weeks old. I felt wonderful after my son was born before having the Mirena put in. Afterwards I began to get extremely depressed, had severe fatigue and dizzy spells, the worse migraines and headaches that I have ever suffered in my life, and began to lose all of my hair. I had no idea and was never told of these possible risks. Had I been warned that it was possible even at the slightest percentage I would have never had it put in to begin with. This has taken a toll on my self esteem as well as my mental state. What woman wouldnt feel this way after losing hair by the handfuls. Not being able to enjoy my new baby or feeling burdened by my other two children due to the depression it has caused. I feel that Women everywhere should always be told the risks no matter how small or large they may be. It could save alot of headaches literally and heartache in the long run.

I had my Mirena removed earlier this year after 2.5 years with it in. Over the time I had my Mirena in, I developed a skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa and among several other common side effects ended up with the worst mood swings ever as well as terrible lumps on my face that have scarred really badly. When I went back to my dermatologist after having the Mirena removed she asked me why I had it put in in the first place as she believed it could do more harm than good. Unfortunately I was only using it for contraception - so I basically gave myself new health problems for the sake of not needing to use condoms with my partner. My dermatologist and gynaecologist work in the same place and whilst they do work together on cases, this sort of thing doesn't seem to have come up. I'm so glad that I had it removed and I really wish they would be a little more honest with the side effects!

- I had my mirena removed Friday, November 6th, after 3 years and nearly 3 months. My side effects included headaches, sore breasts, weight gain, nausea, severe hair loss, depression, severe pitting edema of my right foot, cramping, hip pain, exhaustion, severe mood swings, and acne. During the first six months I had constant bleeding, which I had been told to expect. I took regular pills everyday and the bleeding stopped. Then the hair loss started. My hair came out in clumps and was EVERYWHERE. I lost about 15 inches of my hair in spots. I went to the salon and got a fantastic hair cut, I attributed my hair loss to stress. Now I'm not too sure. I also didn't feel like I was myself with the odor that I developed. No matter how many times I showered I felt irregular. Slowly but surely over the past three years I have gained 30 lbs. I worked out to try to get the weight off, I lost nothing and in fact gained weight! In the winter of 07-08 I also developed a severe bout of depression for which I was prescribed Lexipro. I had always been moody, but never suicidal, Mirena made me suicidal and enraged by the smallest occurence. The pitting edema of my left foot started in July of 08. I have been tested for everything including diabetes, heart problems, clotting disorders, pregnancy, high blood pressure, kidney problems, and the list goes on to the tune of $6,000+. I went to my OB back in the spring and was told if they could find nothing else then they would remove the IUD. In the interim I lost my job and subsequently my insurance. I luckily was able to get coverage again and immediately set an appointment for the removal. Insertion hurt like nothing I have ever experience, removal was quick and almost painless. I also ended up with BV (bacterial vaginosis). I feel and look as though I am about 6 or 7 months pregnant. My belly is actually the same size as it was when my son was born. I weight about 15 lbs more. My breasts were extremely swollen and sore. I am now dealing with the effects of the removal. My foot is so swollen you cannot see my ankles. My breasts are the size of small mellons and are extremely sore, but I have no back pain! I have more energy and mental clarity than I have had in years. I am 5 days post-removal and look forward to regaining my normal happy, peppy self!! I have chosen to go on to a natural family planning method and leave all hormones behind.

I've been suffering with the mirena for months, doctors act strange after i got it, wasn't told of reactions that they were "rare". have carpel tunnel, calcium deficiency, bloating n very fast weight gain minus started being very active as soon as i got it fitted. very life changing for the worse its very shocking, the doctor who pu it in didn't want to see me for a follow up and kept telling me i had to be forced to keep it in over a year n not change my mind. very unprofessional, this was very worrisome after the fact. I just want it gone, no woman should suffer as much as we have, ever.

I started loosing my hair. could not find the reason. the docs blame stress. I didnt buy it. I suspected Mirena, looked in the net, and the next day went to have it removed. it's a week now and I hope the hair issue will stop! I blame the doc for not asking / looking for the side effects. good luck to us all!

After having my daughter in December 2008, my doctor suggested I get the Mirena IUD. Everything looked great. Side effects were a slight chance of cysts on the ovaries and a few others. No period, Birth control for 5 years. I had it put in at 8 weeks pp. I was exclusively breastfeeding my daughter, with even an over supply of breastmilk. Within a week of having the Mirena put in, my milk completely dried up. My doctor said it would not do this, and it was my main concern. So I had a few bags of frozen milk that I used while supplementing with formula, then moved completely over to formula. It wasn't the end of the world, but I wasn't told that this would happen. From there on out until I had it removed in October of 09, was hell. After losing the 40 pounds I had gained with my daughter, within 6 weeks I gained 10 pounds, with a regular healthy diet and exercise. By November I gained 20 in total. Also, horrible mood swings, and extreme irritability. Periods were heavy for 4 days straight, and light for the next 3. After having it for two months depression came. It hit hard. Never wanting to leave my bed. Thankfully, I have an exceptional husband who stood by it all. I am happy to say that I am starting to feel better. I have lost 13 pounds so far. Hopefully will lose the rest that this horrible 'birth control' has given me.

Okay, I have never done this before, but I have nothing else that i know to do. I had mirena put in just after my 6-week check from having my daughter. I never had any complications with my female region before the Mirena. I am beginning that Mirena may be the cause of all my female problems that are occuring right now. While I had the Mirena in i began to have cysts on my ovaries. Eventually, my doctor and I decided to take the Mirena out. I continued to have pelvic pain, and tried to overlook it. My doctors said I was either ovulating or had more cysts. Everytime I went had had a ultrasound there was nothing. The mirena was taken out in January of 2008. My problems keep getting worse. In june of 2009 I received my first ever abnormal pap smear. They did a biopsy and luckily everything came back negative, but the pain just kept getting worse. I have been in the emergency room at least one to three times a week for the past few months and the doctors can't find anything. The even resorted to bladder testing, which of course came back negative. Along with the pain, I have been treated to PID twice in the past two months, I am having recurrent cervix and uterine infections which call for extreme antibiotics. I have never had any type of STD, I have never had any problems with my menstral cycles, they can't find anything wrong with me. My cervix is literally turned inside out. My physician has repeatedly told me that my cervix looks like "raw meat", this was very disturbing to me. I am also bleeding between my menstral cycle and part of the time its not exactly blood occasionally it come out dark black and there is no bloodieness to it.I also had to be placed on anxiety medication and depression medication after the mirena had been in for a while. I had migrains that were very bothersome.I am not the same person I was before the Mirena. I don't know what to do, all I know is I want my life back.I haven't been able to actually have sex with my husband in months because it hurts so bad. My obgyn has even tested my for every std possible and of course, nothing. I want my life back. My daughter will be three soon and its not fair to her. I am at the doctor constantly...PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE!!

I had Mirena for about 6 months in 2008 and knew that something was wrong the moment it was placed. My GYN urged me to give it a fair trial, so I did. I immediately gained 15lbs within 2months. I bled for 4 months. I eventually had no energy and my body would just ache and ache. I felt like my bones were deteriorating. My hair shed to the point that you could see through my scalp. I had acne all over my chest, face, and back. I was very emotional and had crazy mood swings. I felt like I was trapped in someone else's body. After reporting this to my GYN, she said that I must be sensitive to Mirena b/c she has not had any other reports from her patients of these symptoms. I urged her to remove it and regret not having done so sooner. I immediately lost 5lbs the week it was removed. My energy level came back and I do not suffer from the full body aches that would leave me in bed all day! I hair is still pretty thin, but I am working on that. It continued to shed about 8 months after removal. I occasionally get acne, but it's definately much better from before. I urge women to be open about your experiences so that we can prevent this from happening to others! Mirena does not belong on the market.

I have lost about 1/3 of my hair in the last 4 months, since I have had the IUD inserted. I have gained weight (10lbs), acne, hip pain, headaches, and bad cramping. After reading all of the the stories on the web, I have decided to get this thing removed before I am bald and extremely over weight. If I knew I was going to loose all of this hair, I would never have had this put in.

I just sent my fiance out at 8pm to get me some Tylenol. I was thinking about going to the Emergency Room, but I fear that they will not help me any. I have uncomfortable upper right abdominal pain, and I am going through my menstural cycle. Usually, I never get a period but sometimes I have a light one. This time it is painful, and accompanied by diarrea, sweats and this abdominal pain. I am very scared and worried about Mirena being the cause of this. I dont know what I am going to do. :(

I had mirena inserted in August of 2008 and had to get it removed in April 2009 because it wasn't inserted correctly. I am now 19 and even after 7 months I am still having strange symptoms. I have gained 30lbs in a year, I am growing hair on my chin, my hair is shedding, I got PID from it and now have a blocked fallopian tube and a large ovarian cyst. I may never be able to have children again because of mirena.

I read in the pamphlet the conditions (PID, history of ectopic pregnancy) to consider when deciding whether or not the Mirena was a good choice. As there were some considerations that pertained to me, I asked my OB then if it was a safe choice, and he told me it shouldn't be a problem. Two years after getting the device, I went to a Planned Parenthood to have it removed, and the practitioner told me she could not see the screen and that I would need an ultrasound to confirm its presence. I know, personally, it's there because I've checked, as recently as this morning. I don't and have not had regular periods since getting the device, so any type of spotting, etc seems the norm right now. However, almost out of the blue 2 weeks ago I began having pregnancy symptoms. I have 3 children, so I'm pretty sure this is what's going on, not to mention these symptoms have not occurred the entire time I've had the device, until now. I've been to the emergency room twice and explained the situation but was made to wait hours, even after I told them yesterday that I'd begun to bleed, so I left. Now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what to do if in fact I am pregnant while the device is in place and what's going to happen if I'm having a miscarriage, which I suspect began yesterday. Honestly, since the doctors don't seem to care what happen to us, are so protective, and sometimes refuse to even remove the device upon our request, I think it should be taken off the market. Too many women, including myself, are at high risk for serious health problems, most importantly infertility.

I am interested in any information on a class action lawsuit against Mirena. I had this IUD placed two months after my son was born. The first two months with my son were wonderful. I was a little tired, but it was definitely manageable, and I loved bonding with my son and being a mom. My son is now 3 and 1/2 months old and the last six weeks have been hell on earth. I've been so depressed that I've gone to Community Mental Health Emergency Services twice because I was afraid I was going to hurt myself or my son. The second time I was ready to be committed because I just didn't think I could go on; I wanted to die so badly. I have a history of depression, but I've never had suicidal ideation like this. At first, I just thought it was postpartum depression, but this can't all just be coincidence, especially when so many other women are going through the exact same thing. I want Mirena to make it clear on their labeling that this IUD can have SEVERE side effects!

I have had the Mirena for 13 months and since have gained 18 pounds, suffer from chronic yeast infection which have altered y marriage and major mood swings. At times I feel like I am going crazy and I can't even rely on the comfort of my husband's love to heel me as I can't bare the thought of having intimate relationship with him due to the pain and discomfort. I am due to have it removed this week and can't wait. I will post y post-removal symptoms at a later time.

I am a 44 year old single mother to three children, the oldest 15 and the youngest just 4 months. I had the Mirena IUD inserted and immediately had every symptom including severe hair loss and movement of the IUD into my uterine wall. I made several complaints to my Dr. regarding the hair loss and was informed that it was not associated with the IUD because of the information being omitted from the literature packet. I have made a name for myself my whole life for my thick beautiful hair. I have been asked to do commercials and billboards. That has all changed within the last two months and only 3 months of use. I have several bald patches on my head and hundreds more strands of hair coming out daily. My children are fearful of my having cancer and to be honest with all the other issues that I have had due to using the Mirena IUD, I would not be surprised. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE FOR ALL PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A CHOICE. YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT AS A COMPANY TO PLAY GOD WITH OUR LIVES. As you have read from other complaints from other users, depression is a big contributor and when you look in the sink every morning and it is filled with dozens of strands, it makes life difficult as I have always been an athletic healthy women that has never smoked, and drinking happens maybe once every few months. Sincerely, Mary Johnson

I got the mirena 6 weeks postpartum in July 2009. I have been experiencing hair loss, extreme bloating, severe headaches, insomnia and basically everything everyone else is experiencing. I feel worse than pregnant I took 2 preg tests and they cam out negative thats when I figured out it had to be Mirena. Its a government conspiracy to make money. I am soo pissed off and am calling in the morning to demand it be taken out!

I was completely unaware of the side effects of Mirena for 12 months and only became aware of them while doing a search on cause of headaches. Every symptom listed I have been experiencing such as extreme mood swings, blurred vision, headaches, nausea, hair loss, depression. I had attributed it to postpartum depression and am on meds for mood disorder, headaches, even weight gain. I am so angry that these side effects are not listed in the Mirena information brochure and the ones listed are listed as "rare side effects". My family has been through hell and I have been through hell because of this medication. I get it removed in 4 days and I am counting down the seconds. I want my life back.

Mirena has drastically effected my body, mind, and relationships. I have awful mental & physical side effects, and have ruined almost all relationships with close friends & family. I'm tired of being suicidal. I want my life back, my body back, my peace of mind back.

Frauen müssen umfassend aufgeklärt werden. Das herunterspielen von Nebenwirkungen sollte strafbar sein.
