mirena IUD

Mirena Users Have a Right to Complete Information

Target:
US Food and Drug Administration
Sponsored by:

Women are reporting numerous, often debilitating healthcare problems after receiving the Mirena implant.  Most were totally unaware of these potential complications until after the Mirena was inserted and they became sick. Many others are suffering, and have no idea that Mirena is the cause.

Mirena is an IUD used to prevent pregnancy.  Its active ingredient is Levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin (hormone).  Side effect to this hormone are numerous and well documented.

The manufactures of Mirena, Bayer Healthcare, includes most of these side effect only in the physician insert (many adverse reactions are yet to be reported even there).  The patient insert, however, contains only the most life threatening complications.  Physicians are not providing patients with this information and too often, women are told that there are no side effects.  Clearly, this is not the case.

The intention of this petition is to ensure all Mirena users, both potential and current, receive a full list of the adverse reactions associated with the use of Mirena.  Not only do they have a right to make informed choices about their birth control, but they also require this information, so that when side effects arise, they are able to be properly diagnosed.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request the U.S. Food and Drug administration do the following in regard to the Mirena IUD birth control:

1) Require the manufacturer of the Mirena UID, (Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals), to revise the patient information for this device to include all potential Mirena side effects currently listed only in the physician information portion of the label.

2) Require all medical practitioners inserting the Mirena to provide the patient with this information BEFORE the Mirena is inserted.

3) Require all medical practitioners to forward this updated information, along with an explanation of the changes, to all Patients for which they have prescribed/inserted the Mirena.

4) Recommend investigation into the additional temporary and long term side effects being reported (as outlined here) that are not currently mentioned in either the doctor or patient information for the Mirena device.

Many women are reporting numerous, often debilitating healthcare problems after receiving the Mirena implant.  Most are unaware of the potential for complications before the Mirena is inserted and have no idea that Mirena is the cause when they become sick.

The patient information for the device contains warnings for the following side effects ONLY:

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infection, embedment, perforation, discomfort during placement, expulsion, missed menstrual periods, changes in bleeding, ovarian cysts.

This is the only "adverse reaction" information the patient will typically receive.

The following adverse reactions appear ONLY on the physician information for the Mirena (per the official physician information):

abdominal/pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, nausea, headache, nervousness, vulvovaginitis, dysmerorrhea (cramps), back pain, weight increase, breast pain/tenderness, acne, decreased libido, depressed mood, cervicitis (vaginal infection), hypertension, migraine, vomiting, anemia, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), alopecia (hair loss), eczema, pruritus (itchiness), rash, urticaria (hives), abdominal distension, altered mood, hirsutism (abnormal hair growth), edema (swelling).

Although doctors are instructed to share this information with the patient, they often do not.  In many cases, even when specifically asked, doctors are denying a possible link between Mirena and these symptoms. Patients are consistently told there are "no side effects," and that the synthetic hormone (levonorgestrel) contained in the mirena cannot be harmful because the hormone release is localized to the uterus.

The reluctance of doctors to acknowledge the many possible adverse reactions to the Mirena, including the ones documented by the manufacturer, suggests that they are alarmingly ill-informed or purposely obtuse--resulting in prolonged patient suffering and extensive medical expenses while seeking diagnosis/treatment of Mirena-related issues.

In addition, Mirena users are reporting additional common side effects that are not documented in any of the Mirena information provided by the manufacturer.

These include, but are not limited to:

anxiety, mental fog, double-vision, tinnitus, appetite increase, constipation, flatulence, polyuria (frequent urination),chest pain/heart palpitations, shortness of breath, bronchitis, fatigue/drowsiness, fainting, loss of nerve sensation/tingling in extremities, tremor, weight loss, insomnia,  cold intolerance, thyroid dysfunction, nonpuerperal lactation.

Patients have the right to make informed decisions regarding the use of the Mirena device. To do so, they are reliant on their doctors for full disclosure of potential risks/side effects as provided by the manufacturer.  Doctors are responsible for understanding these risks, and properly diagnosing and treating side effects when they occur.

Since patients are NOT currently receiving appropriate counseling regarding the Mirena device/Levonorgestrel, or treatment and diagnosis for the resultant adverse effects, we ask that the FDA consider the above changes to prevent further debilitation, suffering and expense on the part of women using this device.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

I have had the Mirena for 13 months and since have gained 18 pounds, suffer from chronic yeast infection which have altered y marriage and major mood swings. At times I feel like I am going crazy and I can't even rely on the comfort of my husband's love to heel me as I can't bare the thought of having intimate relationship with him due to the pain and discomfort. I am due to have it removed this week and can't wait. I will post y post-removal symptoms at a later time.

I am a 44 year old single mother to three children, the oldest 15 and the youngest just 4 months. I had the Mirena IUD inserted and immediately had every symptom including severe hair loss and movement of the IUD into my uterine wall. I made several complaints to my Dr. regarding the hair loss and was informed that it was not associated with the IUD because of the information being omitted from the literature packet. I have made a name for myself my whole life for my thick beautiful hair. I have been asked to do commercials and billboards. That has all changed within the last two months and only 3 months of use. I have several bald patches on my head and hundreds more strands of hair coming out daily. My children are fearful of my having cancer and to be honest with all the other issues that I have had due to using the Mirena IUD, I would not be surprised. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE FOR ALL PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A CHOICE. YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT AS A COMPANY TO PLAY GOD WITH OUR LIVES. As you have read from other complaints from other users, depression is a big contributor and when you look in the sink every morning and it is filled with dozens of strands, it makes life difficult as I have always been an athletic healthy women that has never smoked, and drinking happens maybe once every few months. Sincerely, Mary Johnson

I got the mirena 6 weeks postpartum in July 2009. I have been experiencing hair loss, extreme bloating, severe headaches, insomnia and basically everything everyone else is experiencing. I feel worse than pregnant I took 2 preg tests and they cam out negative thats when I figured out it had to be Mirena. Its a government conspiracy to make money. I am soo pissed off and am calling in the morning to demand it be taken out!

I was completely unaware of the side effects of Mirena for 12 months and only became aware of them while doing a search on cause of headaches. Every symptom listed I have been experiencing such as extreme mood swings, blurred vision, headaches, nausea, hair loss, depression. I had attributed it to postpartum depression and am on meds for mood disorder, headaches, even weight gain. I am so angry that these side effects are not listed in the Mirena information brochure and the ones listed are listed as "rare side effects". My family has been through hell and I have been through hell because of this medication. I get it removed in 4 days and I am counting down the seconds. I want my life back.

Mirena has drastically effected my body, mind, and relationships. I have awful mental & physical side effects, and have ruined almost all relationships with close friends & family. I'm tired of being suicidal. I want my life back, my body back, my peace of mind back.

I had no idea of these side effects and never contributed my symptoms to the IUD. I suffer from severe anxiety, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, and depression. I have had the Mirena for about 4 years and have been miserable. I have gone to see doctors and counselors and no one put the symptoms together with the IUD. I am scheduled to have it out soon and am hopeful to return to my old self.

I had the Mirena for 5 years and that is when all of my health problems began. My OB said my Mirena has nothing to do w/ my symptoms. I've been to countless doctors and specialists and HUNDREDS of dollars in co-pays! I had it removed and never knew others had side effects like my own until I googled "side effect of Mirena." I can't believe what I have read. I'm convinced it can only get better from here. I feel like I've been robbed of 5 years of my life. It's only been a month since removal but I have already had some changes w/ my health for the better. I think Mirena should be taken off of the market! I'm so disapointed w/ my OB for lying to me when I would go w/ the worst pain and he would just brush it off like no big deal. My OB was also trying to push a new Mirena on me b/c I was having it removed after 5 years and he wanted me to get it again as a form of birth control. I told him no way, I want my body to go back to normal. Hopefully this will happen.

This is very important to me because the side effect of Mirena that were not made public knowledge have impacted my life in a very negative way. From being on Prozac to control mood swings to using Rogaine to stop the hair loss, Mirena has wreaked havoc on my life and my family.

My midwife suggested Mirena because I was breastfeeding. She told me there were no side effects. Within a month I noticed the hair loss I asked my midwife and she said it couldn't be the mirena. I began to have mood swings,Headaches, face and chest hair, weight gain, blurred vision, acne, bloating, abdominal pain, and back ache. I lost a year of my life, my only child's first year of life, because my midwife, and my doctor believed there were no side effects. The hair loss, depression, and headaches alone made me think I was going crazy! These people not only need to inform people of the possible side effects but they should be made to find out why these side effects occur and how to help the people who are still being effected by them. My hair hasn't grown back, the body hair hasn't went away. I've been to their web site numerous times and a few times and it was down because they were updating it but the physicians information listed possible effects that the patient information did not. Someone needs to be held responsible, someone should be accountable to all the woman whose lives have been changed, whose side effects remain.

i have been on mirena for about 7 months now. i have had alot of hair loss, mood swings, weight gain, numbness in my hands, and for the past month i feel like i'm going to have a heart attack. i also have very bad shortness of breath. i am so happy i found this site. i thought all my symptoms may have been from mirena but now that i read that many women are having the same symptoms as me, i am for sure mirena is the cause. i'm going to have it removed as soon as possible.

For me I wanted to get my tubes tied after I had my second child because I knew I only wanted two kids have always and will always. I had the papers signed and ready to go for surgery to have them tied and my doctor refused she told me I had to try the mirena and if I didn't like it she would tie my tubes well in the beginning it was fine no problems at all then all of a sudden everything hit from cysts, depression, hai loss, weight gain, fatique and so on. Of course my Insurance got changed and I can't see the doctor that put it in so I can't confront her about all the problems that I have that she didn't inform me of. The mirena is horrible and I would not suggest getting it.

Until recently I thought that I was crazy. I've had Mirena for 2yrs now and since a few weeks after it was inserted I have suffered from depression, hair loss, severe abdominal pain, mood swings, weight gain without diet or routine change and joint pain. All of which I was made to believe were side effects of my depression. I thought this for 2yrs until a friend of mine did some research and we started talking to other women with Mirena and found out most all have the same symptoms. I was never told any of these things were side effects. I am getting my Mirena removed ASAP and hope that this will help get the word out about how horrible Mirena is. If I was told about these side effects and still chose to get Mirena that would be different but I wasn't even told. 2yrs of thinking I was crazy and for what? Let's get the word out for women everywhere.

I BELIEVE THAT MIRENA HAS CAUSED IRREVERSABLE AND VERY PAINFUL COMPLEX OVARIAN CYSTS. I ALSO HAD WEIGHT GAIN WITH NO DIET CHANGE, I HAD LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT AFTER PREGNANCY AND I GAINED IT ALL BACK WITHIN 2 MONTHS OF HAVING MIRENA IN. I HAVE NOW HAD IT FOR 3 YEARS AND WILL HAVE IT REMOVED TOMORROW DUE TO FEAR OF NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN DEPENDANT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE COMPLEX CYSTS THAT HAVE DEVELOPED. THIS FORM OF IUD SHOULD BE BANNED IN MY OPINION. I COULD NOT EVEN COMPLETE THE COURSE OF THE TREATMENT WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS, COMPLICATIONS THAT WERE NEVER EXPLAINED TO ME, COMPLICATIONS THAT MY DOCTORS IGNORE. I AM TRUSTING MY INSTINCTS. BEFORE MIRENA I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH OVARIAN CYSTS, WEIGHT, FLATULANCE, BREAST TENDERNESS, MOOD SWINGS, OR SIGNS OF DEPRESSION. I DO NOT FEEL THAT I NEED TO HAVE MEDICATIONS FOR EACH OF THESE SYMPTOMS...I JUST NEED TO REMOVE WHAT IS CAUSING IT...PLEASE EDUCATE OUR DOCTORS AND LET THEM HEAR THIER PATIENTS. WE NEED THE TRUTH UP FRONT.

I had mine placed 4 weeks ago at my 6 week post partum appointment. It has been a horrendou 6 weeks since...I have had several UTI's, a chronic yeast infection (neither Diflucan or daily Monistat will help), horrible cramping and migraines that would knock over a horse. I am a hormonal migraine sufferer and was told "this will not effect your headaches" and that "its the best birthcontrol for migraines." WHAT??? I can NOT believe we were not informed. I hope there is a class action suit at some point, because me and my psychotic mood swings, acne and non-existant libido will be the first to sign up. Good luck ladies! We deserve better and should have been better informed!

I was not aware of all the side effects that are caused by Mirena. My life as a result of Mirena has been a nightmare. I'm losing my hair by the handful, it's caused dizzyness, weight gain, inflamation, infections, and low lobido. Please, if nothing else please demand full disclosure of side effects to patients.

As someone in the medical industry, who works closely with the FDA, and more importantly, who is a Mirena SURVIVOR I want to help prevent other women from going through what I did. Pharma companies are required to make information related to side affects, adverse events, etc. available to physicians as well as patients, even if obtained post-market release.

Hair loss or alopecia is a possible side effect, and yet most medical professionals don't know about it, and it is not widely reported. If it is mentioned they tend to use the words : not serious, but as a young woman, losing half your hair, is any but not serious, it is a major emotional trauma. I have lost half my hair, and have only had the Mirena for 5 months, and am having it removed this week.

I had the Mirena put in in june of 07 when my second son was 8 months old. Getting it put it was not easy like I had been told but very painful and I bled and cramped for about a week afterwards. I have had a bloated uncomfortable feeling in my lower stomach for months now and the occasional sharp pain, chest pain, backache etc. I have gained about 25lbs since having it put in and have acne like never before. I didn't associate the weight gain or acne with it until reading this, I was never told about the side effects, I was told there were none except for it coming out of place. I have been debating having it taken out for awhile now, but I am terrified after the pain of having it inserted. I think that it may be just fine for some people, but I think that everyone should be told of all the possible side effects.

In September 2008, 4 months after the birth of my third child, I had Mirena implanted on the advice of my doctor. I was told there was no side effects except for the loss of my period (My doctor read from the advertising pamphlet). I was never informed nor had access to a full list of side-effects. Over the past year I have had serious health issues from debilitating cramps that were similar to labour pain, loss of periods but with intermittant blood clots at irregular intervals, bowel and stomach issues particularly bloating, I put on 25kg in one month and despite changing to eat healthier and exercise the weight kept on packing on, I have had NO SEX DRIVE, an inability to orgasm, and I have had SEVERE DEPRESSION, and MORE. For months and months my doctors have ignored my suggestion that Mirena might be the problem as they all beleive the bullshit PR put out by the company producing Mirena. This needs to change! The information about these side-effects needs to become public knowledge so everyone can make a more informed choice rather than being bullied into a form of contraception that does not suit everyone.

I have suffered from several side effects of the IUD such as cystic acne, weight gain, hair loss, depression, anxiety, heart palpatations, extreme pain in my abdomen similar to contractions, and hot flashes. I was not told about any of these side effects and have lost 3 years of my life that I can never get back. I had my IUD removed 11 months ago and although I have experienced a drastic improvement, I have still not fully recovered.

Hello, I received the Mirena in March of 2009, It was 9 weeks after the birth of my 3rd child. Well everything seemed to be fine at first and then a few weeks later i started to experience some really scary stuff. i would have unbelievable cramping, i would be sitting and experience Vertigo, I started to get chest tightening and the feeling that my heart was beating in my Through. Then i would start to see white flash of light and white spots in my line of vision, along wit blurry vision. Now i am also getting the worst headache i have ever had... along with tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. Before the IUD i was completely healthy, and now they dont know what is wrong with me. I have tried to talk to my OB, to see if the Hormones are causing adverse effects... But i dont get anywhere with him. I do believe they should make it more public, about how badly hormones can mess with every aspect of your body. It has gotten so bad that i am scared to drive, because the dizzy spells hit with out warning. it would just be nice to KNOW ALL possible side effect

I have spent the last two years in and out of the doctors office. Chest pain, tired all the time, emotional, depressed, weight gain despite spending over $2000 on a personal trainer and dietician. Headaches that make me fall asleep for hours (not good when you have little kids) itchy skin, muscle weakness, NO sex drive, the list goes on. I finally saw a doctor while on vacation who suggested I remove the IUD. 3 days later I started to feel better. Heres hoping to a recovery. I never would have gotten the IUD in the first place had I known of these possible side effects.

I suffered from irritability, anger, depression, extreme mood swings, gained 30 pounds, constant lower back aches and cramping. Worst of all I developed thyroid problems leading to a diagnosis of multi-nodular goiter. I would have NEVER gotten the device knowing there is potential risks for women with a predisposition to thyroid problems. IT IS WRONG to keep that information from people.

I have had a miserable time in life for the past couple years having the Mirena in. I have had tests done by a doctor, I have had my husband want to leave me, and I have been hurting emotionally and physically. I never even thought of my IUD being the cause until I came across the mirena awareness site and the curezone site. Only after reading all of the other women's stories did I realize the Mirena has been the problem. I am having it removed in 4 days and will be keeping a log of how I feel after so I can responsibly post after the removal!!!

Many mothers are using this as their preferred method & it is zapping them of energy & happiness. Depression is a major side effect. Doctors wont tell you that though!

I have migrane headaches now and have no energy at all. I can sleep 9 hours and still feel tired when I wake up. I know have acne on my chin and often times i am irritable and snap at my husband for no reason at all.I also have felt weird movements in my stomach, even to the point that I thought I was pregnant again.I am now diagnosed as prediabetic to top it all off.

I had Mirena inserted in March 2009, I loved Mirena until May 2009. In May I began to experience constant breast tenderness, mood swings, cramps, increased vaginal discharge (mucus like), decreased libido, depression, acne, and weight gain. In September 2009, I developed a sharp stabbing pain in pelvis at that point I was curled in bed with tears welling in my eyes due to the severe pain. I called my OBGYN and went in for an appointment requesting the Mirena be taken out. After doing a pelvic examination, I was informed that the Mirena could not be located and my OBGYN sent to radiology for ultrasounds. It was concluded that the Mirena was partially embedded in my uterine wall and I have a very large cyst on my left ovary. On September 24th 2009, I had my Mirena surgically removed and I have felt so much better since. The cyst remains for the time being but I hope it will subside within a few months. I would never recommend Mirena to anyone!

I had vision problems after having this put in and had no idea what it was from until after speaking with a doctor I work with .............I had been to the ER with vision loss in one eye and they did not have a clue because it is not in the patient information that I actually read........Mirena would not reimburse any of my expenses incurred as a result and the OB doc took out the device after I brought it to his attention that vision loss in one eye is an indication for removal.............this is absurd that you have to tell your doctor what the problem is

i've had the merina for about 3 months now and i've gained to date about 8 kilos. my skin is breaking out, i'm irritable and bloated. Went to hospital last week with serious period pains- was told after a sonar that i had a syst on my left ovary- another side effect they dont tell you about. Then my doctor told me he couldn't remove it because the gp that inserted it cut the cords too short now i've gotta go for a DNC to get it removed. Do yourself a favour. Do not get it! BAD BAD BAD EXPERIENCE. Oh ya, i gain weight every week!!!!!
