MN Against the St Paul Sugar Glider Ban

Bill Stephenson, St. Paul's animal control supervisor has asked City Council to consider banning Sugar Gliders in the city of St Paul. He stated he was unsure about what danger they would cause to people or the environment and this is not the climate for sugar gliders. Correct, this is not the correct environment, but last time I checked, it was not correct for snakes, lizzards, arachnids that are not native to the state, hedgehogs, ferrets and basically all other animals that we owners keep confined to their caged domains inside of our own warm loving homes.

Sugar Gliders will not be out wandering around harming the environment and people because first off, they can not live, thrive and survive the drastic MN weather. Neither the heat nor cold would suit them here. We owners keep our homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter to suit a healthy lifestyle for them. Being as they are caged inside our own homes, they are not causing a threat to people. They are not running loose...and are confined. Owners of gliders know how precious they are, and we make sure to keep them safe and sound...and in thier cage. There has been no cases of a snared sugar glider, so it should be pretty obvious that we are doing our jobs in keeping them within thier confines.

There are some wonderful vetrinarians in St Paul...the ban would surely hurt their business as they work with and deal with gliders.  The ban would also hurt those who are in St Paul and do own gliders. There would several animals rehomed...which is stressful to the animals and can cause death. Also, those who could not be rehomed may be euthanized. These animals never did anything but play in their cage and love their owners. They are not posing a threat to anything or anyone by simply being in their home and just being what they are. The only harm being done is that if this ban is passed, several innocent animals will suffer as a result to this. It definietely is not necessary and defintely inhumane to inflict the suffering that will take place...with both the animals and the owners as they both bond very closely together. A bond that should never be broken.

If there is issues with gliders being sold at trade shows and/ or conventions... focus the issue on ending that problem... not the entire ownership, small breeders and responsible pet shops. I would also like to note that this quote was made by Bill Stephenson and taken from the Star Tribune article on the ban issues: "I don't know if it's fear of the unknown, but you know what, I've got enough to do,". If he took the job, he should be ready to handle all aspects of it. It is not my responsibility as a pet owner to give up my pets...loving members of my family...because he claims it may make him work harder. What do I pay taxes for? To put people who do a mediocre attempt at best at their job. I think not. Leave the gliders be!
We the undersigned are concerned with the possibility of the banning of Sugar Gliders in St Paul MN.

Bill Stephenson, St. Paul's animal control supervisor has asked City Council to consider banning Sugar Gliders in the city of St Paul. We do not feel that this ban should be made as it would just hurt the animals and the people who own these animals. Please reconsider for the sake of these animals. It would cause them more harm to ban them to leave them safe and loved in their homes.

Thank you for your time, and I hope that this petition has some valuable knowledge for you to gain on why it would be against the good of the sugar glider to ban them.
