While we are grateful as a country for the service/personal sacrifice of John McCain as a veteran and former POW, our concern is for the welfare of all veterans who so honorably served and those who will serve going forward.
That's why we are doing everything we can to make sure the American people are informed w/respect to Senator McCain's appalling failure to support our troops w/legislation in the United States Senate.

We, the undersigned Veterans for Obama and Military Families in Central Minnesota, are concerned for the immediate future of our extraordinary country.

We are concerned about the security interests of this nation.

We are concerned about the low esteem this nation has amongst our allies.

We are concerned about the current use of our military personnel in unnecessary warfare.

We are concerned about the care of our veterans and providing them the medical help they need, both physical and psychological, when they return home.

We are concerned because we believe that our military has been misused in the war on Al-Quaida and deterred from seeking out Osama Bin Laden.

While we honor the military service of John McCain and his role as a POW in the Vietnam conflict, we do not believe that this gives him entitlement to become the commander-in-chief of this nation's military.  We question McCain's judgment on a number of international issues, both past and present.  At the end of the first presidential debate, we were surprised to hear Senator John McCain describe his relationship with this country's veterans.

John McCain's words were: "I know the veterans.  I know them well, and I know that they know that I take care of them, and I have been proud of their support and their recognition of my service to the veterans, and I love them, and I'll take care of them, and they know that I'll take care of them."

But the facts do not sustain these claims: McCain's actions as a U.S. senator have been to deny funding over the past five years, or not vote at all, on every bill regarding veteran's issue.

Whereas Senator Obama has promised to fully fund veteran's medical care, Senator McCain has repeatedly voted to cut, eliminate or cut veteran's health care 29 times since 1990.  Additionally, Senator McCain advocates the privatization of the veteran's healthcare services and intends to restrict veteran's healthcare to those with combat injuries only.

Since coming to the Senate, Obama has led a bi-partisan effort to focus the military and veteran's health care systems on:

1)      suicide prevention for veterans

2)      treatment for brain injured veterans

3)      relieving homelessness among veterans and

4)      accessing mental health care for veterans returning home with PTSD/Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Senator Obama consistently supports millions of dollars for troop safety equipment and vehicles, while Senator McCain has opposed additional funding for these items.

Little known truth: Organizations such as Disabled American Veterans and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America overwhelmingly rate Senator Obama more favorably than they do Senator McCain.

That's because we believe that Senator Obama has the right grasp on international issues that will lead to expeditious use of our military forces worldwide.  We find McCain erratic in his views and out of touch with the current and impending dangers we face in the years ahead.

Thus we, as do many other veterans and family members nationwide, find Senator Obama the better leader--ideally suited in temperament, grounded in reality, and living in authenticity--to guide us through the difficult times ahead that this great nation will face.

We justly take this weighty election conscientiously and want to make known our steadfast support for our leader of choice, Senator Barack Obama; as such we hold his commitment to veterans and to our beloved country in highest regard.

Tell us why veterans issues are important to you.

How can American citizens better support our troops?

I'm a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, grand & great-grand daughter of men in my family who have fought in every war that America has been engaged in. I know what support of our troops and military truly look like and John McCain is not it. One of the main reasons for giving my support to Barack Obama early on is his devotion to our military families and his call to end the war in Iraq. I've researched Barack's voting record on military issues versus that of John McCain and decided to put my support behind Barack. There is no way that I would vote for a veteran that has voted against the troops and veterans enough times to EARN a "D" Grade from major military associations.

Americans can better support our troops and veterans by choosing a president that will truly respect and honor their missions, duties and sacrifices by only using a military option when America is threatened. Americans should sacrifice by doing all we can to support the troops and veterans including holding the president to his promises to the troops and by digging deep to help our military families, and keeping the promises made concerning the health and medical needs of our troops and veterans.

Withour veterans, obviously none of us would be free to sing anything. I am proud to have served for 5 years, and now have a son on active duty with the Army.

American citizens need a better appreciation our place in the world order. The Iraq war is an example of what America should not be. Had we had the value of worldwide respect - we could have gotten rid of Saddam withour a war.

I spent 16 years 10 months and 28 days as a medical officer in the Air Force. I have seen first hand the damage done to individuals and families due to the wars. The VA is overworked and underfunded and people cannot get the help they need. The fact that the largest growing segment of homeless is young veterans in their 20's is an American tragedy.

Thank them for their service and better still join the military and give them a break. Also support leaders who appreciate the weighty responsibility of sending young men and women into harm's way and will not squander lives and treasure in efforts unworthy of their sacrifice.

My father, brothers, uncles, friends all served in the service. It is very important for everyone to recognize how much is given to us with their sacrifices.

It is common sense: Veterans have done honorable duty for the citizens of the country and deserve fairness in return.

Replace the lying Republican administration and their control of government.

American Sacrifice of life, liberty, and property is take for granted.

Only go to war in defense of the U.S.A., and stop sacrificing human life for the self-serving-higher-causes of government officials.
