MORE VEGAN OPTIONS FOR LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL!

Dear Cafeteria Administration,

There are many choices to choose from at lunch. However, there aren't nearly enough for vegetarians and vegans. I was hoping that it was possible for you to make it mandatory to have at least 3-5 options for vegetarians and vegans for school lunches.

One reason you should add more vegetarian and vegan items to the lunch menu are the people who eat free lunch. Both vegans and vegetarians attend public schools, believe it or not. People who get a free lunch are forced at my school to get a milk. You probably already know this, but vegans do not consume milk or any other dairy products. If they cannot get free lunch because of this, they might not be able to get lunch at all depending on their economical situation. Perhaps you should offer non-dairy milks (e.g. soy, rice, almond, etc.) and make them available for the free lunch. You may or may not support veganism because of the lack of dairy products, but would you rather vegans to not be able to eat lunch at all? Last year, I stopped eating lunch, because the lunch ladies made me get a milk. I kept throwing it away. After a while, I decided not to waste the milk, so I quit eating lunch. Also, if vegans who don't get free lunch purchase lunch at school, the school will make more profit by offering vegan alternatives.

There are also health reasons to add more vegetarian and vegan options to the school menu. One of them is obesity. Vegetables contain way less calories than meat, of course. For example, one cup of broccoli contains thirty calories, but one patty of beef contains one hundred forty calories. In a Tyson's chicken patty, there are one hundred eighty calories in each patty.

Another health benefit of offering vegetarian options is lower cholesterol. There is way more cholesterol in meat than there is in fruits and vegetables. For example, there is absolutely no cholesterol in broccoli, but there is sixty-five milligrams of cholesterol in one beef patty.

It is possible for vegetarians to get the nutrition they need. First off, there is protein in beans, peas, lentils, peanuts, peanut butter, tofu, soy milk, and fake meat. Second, there is iron in broccoli, cashews, sunflower seeds, cereals, tomato juice, raisins, and more. Vegans often have to worry about consuming enough calcium. Calcium can be obtained from almonds, kale, calcium-fortified orange juice, and calcium-fortified soy milk.

Often, people want to consume more omega-3 fatty acids. Often people think that these acids can only be found in fish. They can actually also be found in flax seed, which can be obtained from health-food stores.

There are not nearly enough vegetarian and vegan choices at lunch. I am hoping you would consider making it mandatory to offer more vegetarian and vegan options to the school lunch.
