We the undersigned.

To the Honourable Members of the National NAIDOC Committee

This petition of Facebook Users, Friends and Family in both Australia and the rest of the World,

Draws to your attention that there is still no Australian NAIDOC National Public Holiday to celebrate and recognise the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples of Australia.

I am of Aboriginal descent and feel that a day that celebrates ATSI culture, a national day, would be a wonderful thing. Australia celebrates the landing of Captain Cook, which, to me, is a sad day for Aboriginal people and not one to constantly remember. Lets have a day, as well, that's recognised by all of Australia's people, that celebrates our age old beingness and belonging to this land.

I realy feel we need to start to acknowledge and respect the Indigenous people of australia, and have some compassion for what they have endured under colonisation. Surely achieving an Indigenous public holiday would be a further step towards reconconciliation and healing.

Are banks and horse races more important than acknowledging Australia's first people?

I hope that this day will help to reduce the divisions in our society and provide a platform for respect for our Indigenous people.

Australia has 11? public holidays per year. I would support at least one of these could honour indigenous people and help to create awareness and understanding among all the people of Australia.

Australia, U celebrate Australia Day which is a sad day in aboriginal history! Shame on U! How about celebrating the true traditional owners of the country in which we stand for their courage, persistence n survival! Hence the reason why so many of us celebrate SURVIVAL DAY!

What a great way for all Australians to annually demonstrate their ongoing care and support for our indigenous co-citizens and our appreciation of the culture and understanding of our beautiful land which they possess. While I respect Her Majesty and mean no discourtesy, perhaps we could forfeit the Queen's Birthday hol.to allow for an Indigenous Peoples one.

Maybe as a replacement for the "Queens birthday" holiday when we become a republic? However, even BEFORE we become a republic, this is a good idea. Each holiday in our calendar helps us to focus -- just a little -- upon what it stands for: Australia Day (European settlement in 1788); ANZAC Day ("Lest we forget"); Easter & Xmas (Xtian heritage); etc, etc. These are all "mainstream" cultural markers that will rightfully remain. However Indigenous culture needs to be better recognised and affirmed -- by EVERYONE. I could see this becoming a far more deeply spiritual day than just a "holiday". Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander People of Australia have been custodians of this land for many thousands of years. We ALL have much to learn (spiritually, economically, philosophically, etc.) from this culture. I pray it will come to pass that we have an Australian National Public Holiday that celebrates and recognises the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander People of Australia soon.

To celebrate Australia is an important part of building our pride and sense of community and really does deserve the public holiday we know as 'Australia Day'. However, without acknowledging traditional nations and their stories and the stories of European invasion and suppression, australia day feels shameful and hollow to many australians. A new holiday to celebrate the true custodians of this land will strengthen our nation's spirit and help us overcome many issues we still face as a scarred country.

In the spirit of Reconciliation a National NAIDOC Public Holiday should be available to everyone not just ATSIs. And the name should be called NATIONAL ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PUBLIC HOLIDAY!

For to long Australia has been ashamed of its history. Now is a time to reach out and give a little back. 1 day a year will never heal the hurt but it will be enough to show all Australians that Aboriginal history and culture is as important as Australia Day!!!
