The Producers at Walden Media have mangled the storyline of the novel - The Dark Is Rising - so much so, that the title of the film should be changed. Although the rights were purchased the very heart of the books and story have been removed. Taking the story OUT of the UK, taking the mythology - Arthurian, Welsh, Pagan, and English OUT of the story has stripped The Dark Is Rising of it's essential elements. The story is not about some uber-wunderkind boy who is shy of girls and rich in magical know-how. The story is about the age-old battle of good versus evil told through the lens of Celtic, Pagan and Welsh mythology. Until these things are restored, the title of the movie should reflect the changes.

I read the books when I was 8 years and they remain to this day among my favourite books of all time.
I was a bit sceptical when I heard there was to be a movie and when I finally saw the trailer I nearly cried. How could they butcher these lovely books like that? It's got nothing to do with the book I love so much, so please: change the name!

The Dark Is Rising, and the series of books it is part of, are essentially about the loss of innocence and growth of wisdom, and of the power of words over the power of violence. It is fundamentally *not* an "action" story, as the current film frames it. From everything I have seen so far, the film being made bears no real resemblance to these uniquely brilliant novels and the filmmakers should acknowledge that they are telling a completely different story.

Dear Moronic Excuses for Filmmakers,
There is absolutely no excuse for not READING THE BOOKS. They're very short, and I understood them when I was seven years old. I'm sure they won't fly over your heads.
... Maybe they will.
Sincerely,
Abby

I was heartbroken when I saw the trailer two days ago and I'm still furious that Walden has mangled beyond belief the wonderful Dark is Rising. I'm disgusted that most of the cast and crew appear to not have read the books (wtf?) and that they can justify this apology of an adaptation (Shame on you Mr Eccleston!). I included this series in my dissertation for my English degree and so it is an important part of my life. I want to see the name 'Dark is Rising' removed and I shall be telling everyone I know to avoid the film like the plague.

I love The Dark is Rising series and have reread them a number of times. After seeing how many changes have been made to the essence of the story, I have no interest in going to the movie (despite the presence of the excellent Christopher Eccleston).

This film shouldn't be connected in any way to my favourite books of all time. I've decided not to watch it since I'd like to keep the images in my head as they are - not because I dislike adaptations in general, but because what they did to the characters, the settings and the mythology of the books is simply hideous.

I refuse to go see this movie or take my boys, ages 9 & 11, because they are real children who like to read books and see those books made into movies, not rip-offs that insult their intelligence by only sharing character names. I don't care what you call it, we won't watch.

What they've done to this beloved story is criminal and invasive, and their casual attitude toward the original work is insulting. The idea that they've improved on TDiR in this adaptation is downright offensive. I won't pay to see this, and I'll tell everyone I know who loves these books what's been done to them.

I didn't even realize this really was the dark is rising until I checked imdb and saw Cooper's name. I read these books at least 10 times as a kid and know this in not the story. Cooper must be upset and so am I. No one should see this movie!

Next to The Lord of the Rings, The Dark is Rising Sequence is my favourite book/series. I have read them about 12 times now, in about 5 years. It is preposterous to change these books so much in the movie - they were great books, and the only thing they have in common are the characters' names. If you're going to do a movie, show some consideration for the author of the book that worked so hard to make it what it was. Don't twist it beyond recognition and then slap the same name on it. Be honest and fair. Change the name of this movie.

I absolutely love movies but nobody wants to see their favorite stories butchered by Hollywood. Stop trying to make what was already great into what you think is better. Let us spend our money on quality adaptations of the stories we already love! Please reconsider the script or change the name of this film to better suit its changes.

The movie you are making is something entirely other than the work that Susan Cooper produced. If you are not going to respect her creation, you forfeit the right to the draw that the name of her book will lend to your movie. Call it something else and change the names; the rest is so different that no one will recognize any similarity between the two.

Although it is perfectly acceptable to take liberties when adapting a novel to film, this is outrageous. Such major changes in (or absence of) plot, themes, and magical feel of the original story turn it into an entirely different, unfamiliar story which will drive away disappointed fans of the book.

Brilliant idea! Make a magical-coming-of-age movie if you want, but don't sully a perfectly good book by destroying it onscreen. They did the same thing to Ella Enchanted, and while the movie could have been amsuing diverting of it's own right, as an interpretation of the book it sucked doorknobs and I hated it for it.

Based on the trailers of the movie, it is very different from the book that we love and know. It's one thing to change a story to make it more suitable for the big screen; it's another to change it so that the movie can earn more money. This movie does not deserve the honor to be named after the brilliant book

The blatant disrespect for Susan Cooper and her work displayed by the people involved in this film is disgusting. It is one thing to alter material to make it suitable for the screen--it's another to destroy it. I intend to boycott Walden Media and any films that this director and these script writers participate in--they've clearly demonstrated their inability to produce anything worthwhile, even when given the best material to work with.

Books should never be destroyed through film. Film instead should illuminate to those who have not read the book how good the book is without straying too far from the original written word.

If you're going to make a movie - write a screenplay, direct it, act in it - then at least have a little respect for the source material. Go back to the drawing board or change the name completely - What you have created IS NOT "THe Dark is Rising".

As one who was born and brought up in England, holidayed in Cornwall and Wales and was thrilled by the Arthurian and Celtic legends, I am dismayed at the tasteless pastiche that has been made of Ms Cooper's story. Do not make it worse by using her book's title for the film.

I have been waiting for years for someone to get a clue about how awesome the dark is rising is and make a movie out of it but this is a travesty. They should change the name or stick to the original plot because so much has gone wrong with this movie. I can't believe Susan Cooper would actually allow something like this to happen.

The core of the books have been brutalized. Make a movie if you want to, but take out the mythology and you take out the real essence of the story.
If the title stays, the books will always be associated with the movie.

Like many people who genuinely love books and mythology, I grew up with The Dark Is Rising. It was the fabric of my childhood. While I understand that books change when they are made into films, that some books change quite a lot, and that the producers are not making this film for me, I'm disappointed and disheartened by the attitudes displayed by folks involved with this film toward the books and people who have read and enjoyed the books. If the people making the film are not interested in the books and find all those pesky layers of plot and symbolism boring, I think it's better that the name of the film be changed to reflect the producers' vision. What that film might be called, I don't know. But imagine how happy millions of people for whom The Dark Is Rising is an important part of their childhood and adult lives will feel when the name of a film that has nothing to do with The Dark Is Rising is changed to something more appropriate, and one day, someone with a real vision and love for the books, like Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings or Chris Columbus with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will come along and do real justice to the story, thereby pleasing existing fans and creating new ones.

The Dark is rising was one of my absolute favorite series' as a child. It was revered above Lord of the Rings, and I still hold it to be a better series than Harry Potter. The absolute trashing of this award winning classic book is a travesty. By reworking it in the way the movie seems to be, you took out anything which would make it interesting (or good) to new viewers. The readers who have read the books won't want to see it (as the trailer looks bad) and new viewers won't want to see the movie or read the books. Those making the movie have stated repeatedly that they have shown disdain for the book series (only one person associated with the movie has read beyond The Dark is Rising and onto the rest of the series) and those who like it. The way to help promote a movie associated with a book is to encourage the fans of the series, to get them involved and honor the things which they liked about the series, not alienate them so that they drive away other viewers. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have honored the key elements of each series while making changes for the movie screen and managed to keep (and add to) their fans.

I love this series of books. My kids love the series. Some of the most eloquent descriptions of fantasy are written in these books. That it has had its cultural heart ripped out and replaced by something much less is a travesty and I'll be telling my friends not to take their kids along.
# 11:

Seriously. What's the point of making the book into a movie if you change the whole point of it? It disgusts me sometimes what some cheap directors will do to make a quick buck.

It is so sad that my favorite series of books as a child is being so horribly portrayed in this movie. It has been stripped it of its Arthurian legend roots and made into an action-packed, generic fantasy flick.

I am a fan of the Dark is Rising sequence. I am one of the people that Walden Media should be wooing, not alienating. If you ignore us, the fans, and produce a substandard adaptation, you will lose revenue and tarnish your reputation. We are the ones who will make or break this picture's success, and so far, things are not looking good.

It's a violation of everything the book stands for. Pure and simple. This is not the Dark is Rising, and anyone who believes so is a fool. There are too many reasons to list why this movie should be hung, drawn and quartered but let's just say that Walden Media and any of those involved with the movie have managed to destroy so many people's childhoods in their zealous race to keep up with Hollywood fantasy epics they keep vomiting out. I will not watch a movie which postures itself as something it isn't.

If you call this the dark is rising and say it is a film version of the book I will not see it and specifically I will not buy the dvd (this is where the big bucks are) this is not the book so don't call it that - name it something else and then find a writer who loves the story in the way anyone who grew up with it would love the story and make a film adaptation of the book. Not some hollywood piece of crap that does nothing for the sublties of a book I still enjoy reading and I will also not take my nephews or nieces to see it and encourage them not to see it if you try and say that you are filming the book

While the above incorrectly states that the movie no longer takes place in the UK, the general jist that the story has been warped all out of recognition is correct. Further, numerous interviews by those involved have clearly indicated a complete disdain for the book and its fans. I therefore recommend the name change to "My Gorge is Rising."
