The Producers at Walden Media have mangled the storyline of the novel - The Dark Is Rising - so much so, that the title of the film should be changed. Although the rights were purchased the very heart of the books and story have been removed. I read the books when I was 8 years and they remain to this day among my favourite books of all time. I was a bit sceptical when I heard there was to be a movie and when I finally saw the trailer I nearly cried. How could they butcher these lovely books like that? This film shouldn't be connected in any way to my favourite books of all time. I've decided not to watch it since I'd like to keep the images in my head as they are - not because I dislike adaptations in general, but because what they did to the characters, the settings and the mythology of the books is simply hideous.

What they've done to this beloved story is criminal and invasive, and their casual attitude toward the original work is insulting. I didn't even realize this really was the dark is rising until I checked imdb and saw Cooper's name. I read these books at least 10 times as a kid and know this in not the story. Cooper must be upset and so am I. No one should see this movie!

Next to The Lord of the Rings, The Dark is Rising Sequence is my favourite book/series. I have read them about 12 times now, in about 5 years. It is preposterous to change these books so much in the movie - they were great books, and the only thing they have in common are the characters' names. Although it is perfectly acceptable to take liberties when adapting a novel to film, this is outrageous. Such major changes in (or absence of) plot, themes, and magical feel of the original story turn it into an entirely different, unfamiliar story which will drive away disappointed fans of the book.

Brilliant idea! Make a magical-coming-of-age movie if you want, but don't sully a perfectly good book by destroying it onscreen. They did the same thing to Ella Enchanted, and while the movie could have been amsuing diverting of it's own right, as an interpretation of the book it sucked doorknobs and I hated it for it.

If the people making the film are not interested in the books and find all those pesky layers of plot and symbolism boring, I think it's better that the name of the film be changed to reflect the producers' vision. What that film might be called, I don't know. But imagine how happy millions of people for whom The Dark Is Rising is an important part of their childhood and adult lives will feel when the name of a film that has nothing to do with The Dark Is Rising is changed to something more appropriate, and one day, someone with a real vision and love for the books, like Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings or Chris Columbus with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will come along and do real justice to the story, thereby pleasing existing fans and creating new ones.

The readers who have read the books won't want to see it (as the trailer looks bad) and new viewers won't want to see the movie or read the books. I love this series of books. My kids love the series. Some of the most eloquent descriptions of fantasy are written in these books. That it has had its cultural heart ripped out and replaced by something much less is a travesty and I'll be telling my friends not to take their kids along.

Seriously. What's the point of making the book into a movie if you change the whole point of it? It disgusts me sometimes what some cheap directors will do to make a quick buck.

I am a fan of the Dark is Rising sequence. I am one of the people that Walden Media should be wooing, not alienating. If you ignore us, the fans, and produce a substandard adaptation, you will lose revenue and tarnish your reputation. We are the ones who will make or break this picture's success, and so far, things are not looking good.

I'm so outraged by Walden Media and everyone involved with the film's complete disrespect for this beloved classic from my childhood. It makes me really hesitant to support any other works produced by them!

It's a violation of everything the book stands for. Pure and simple. This is not the Dark is Rising, and anyone who believes so is a fool. There are too many reasons to list why this movie should be hung, drawn and quartered but let's just say that Walden Media and any of those involved with the movie have managed to destroy so many people's childhoods in their zealous race to keep up with Hollywood fantasy epics they keep vomiting out. I will not watch a movie which postures itself as something it isn't.

If you call this the dark is rising and say it is a film version of the book I will not see it and specifically I will not buy the dvd (this is where the big bucks are) this is not the book so don't call it that - name it something else and then find a writer who loves the story in the way anyone who grew up with it would love the story and make a film adaptation of the book. Not some hollywood piece of crap that does nothing for the sublties of a book I still enjoy reading and I will also not take my nephews or nieces to see it and encourage them not to see it if you try and say that you are filming the book

While the above incorrectly states that the movie no longer takes place in the UK, the general jist that the story has been warped all out of recognition is correct. Further, numerous interviews by those involved have clearly indicated a complete disdain for the book and its fans. I therefore recommend the name change to "My Gorge is Rising."
