National Firefighter's Day

Target:
To establish an official National Firefighter's Day
On Behalf of Connor Geraghty I am starting this formal petition.  On November 15, 2001, Andrea Peyser, journalist for the NY Post, wrote the following article.

WORLDWIDE movements have started with less.

This one began with a computer, a boy, and his powerful desire to honor the father he loved.

Connor Geraghty was searching for a way to channel his grief. His father Edward, 45, a battalion chief for the New York City Fire Department, died while saving lives on Sept. 11.

Connor, 14, who possesses powers of persuasion you could bottle and sell, sat at a friend's computer on Long Island last month, and typed an e-mail.

"Hello, I am Connor Geraghty of Rockville Centre, N.Y.," he began. "I lost my Dad on September 11th.

"Many firefighters lost their lives to save someone else's. They truly are heroes."

Then, Connor made his pitch:

"In honor of the bravery, courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a day in our nation to celebrate and appreciate their hard work and never-ending passion for saving lives."

Connor proposed establishing a National Firefighters Day, to pay tribute to the men and women who give selflessly each day.

He asked readers to place their names at the bottom of his e-mail petition, and forward the list to friends.

He signed it, "I Love u Dad." Then he hit the send key.

"I didn't expect any response," Connor, a freshman at Kellenberg Memorial Catholic HS, told me.

But the interest was so vast, so intense, it caught Connor off-guard.

"I got responses from Japan, France, from all over Europe and Asia," he said.

More than 4,000 people have signed the petition so far. The best part was "I met people from my dad's firehouse" - Battalion 9, Engine 54 in Manhattan.

Connor's mom, Mary, 41, soon got into the act.

She forwarded the petition to Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose son, Kevin, she used to baby-sit.

Yesterday, McCarthy read a tribute to Connor and his father into the Congressional Record.

With national magazines now calling, Connor hopes news of his petition reaches President Bush.

Connor initially wanted Firefighters Day to be held on Sept. 11, but now he thinks that date should be reserved for all sorts of heroes. Firefighters, he firmly believes, deserve another day all their own.

At a memorial service on Oct. 25, Connor's father was promoted to deputy chief. Now Connor, who had wanted to become a doctor, strives to fight fires. Like his dad.

Said his mom, "Those two had such a special relationship.

It has been six years and we still don't have a National Firefighter's Day.  Please help change this.  Below is the original email.

Hello, I lost my Dad on September 11th; he was Chief Edward Geraghty, Battalion 9, New York City Fire Department. He lost his life with many other heroes that day, victims of the terrorists. Firefighters from all over have come to the aid and rescue of the tragedy in NewYork and Washington , D.C.

Many firefighters lost their lives to save someone else's. The truth of the matter is, they do this every single day. They truly are heroes.

I know many people feel helpless, especially those who live far from NYC and D.C. We all want to do something to show our appreciation,
our support! I think we can... In honor of the bravery, courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a day in our nation to celebrate and appreciate their hard-work and never-ending passion for saving lives. I think we should honor all those other heroes  who still live today.

I'm starting a petition for a National Firefighters Day. Will you help make every September 11th  "National Firefighters Day"? Please join me!

Thank you,
Connor Geraghty, age 14,

I am a widow of a Fallen Firefighter. My husband was a volunteer firefighter and responded with his fire department to a house fire. When they arrived it was fully involved and very smokey. My husband had to go inside to make sure no one was inside and to assess the house fire. When he turned seeing fire to his left to spray water on it he fell into the basement of the house for the floor had been burned away and there was so much smoke he could not see anything. He died two days later in the hospital that they took him to by helicopter. Not many of us would walk into burning buildings but the firefighters who do have the courage, and training to help anyone in need. They need to have a day to honor them. I just came back from the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial where 110 firefighters were remembered and honored - one was my husband. The honor he was given and the respcet my sons and I were given will always be treasured! At times we think my husband and we have been forgotten.

My husband, who just passed away this past May, was a volunteer Fireman for 45 years and served as an office including Fire Chief for many years. All firemen deserve a special day in their honor.

Seven years later I remember thinking of the firefighters and other rescue workers who ran into the towers, climbing the stairs, going unselfishly upward to rescue strangers. It brings tears to this day. Greater love no man hath than that he lay down his life for his friends. How much more love to lay down one's life for total strangers. There is no honor great enough for such a sacrifice. Let us have a National Heroes Day to remember them all. WE WILL NEVER FORGET!!

My husband is a firefighter and his bravery and courage does not get recognized enough. I am all in favor of setting aside a day that would recognize all of these brave men and women.

Connor,First of all I am sorry for the loss of your hero and Father and best friend. Also, I am behind you all the way on this petition. And so you know, I am a Firefighter in Anamosa,IA and your father has a personal meaning to us at the Anamosa Fire Department. You see some of the men from FDNY Battalion 9, Engine Co. 54, and Ladder 4, 'Pride of Midtown', stayed at our firehouse one year they all rode bicycles in RAGBRAI, pior to the attacks of 9-11. We here feel as if they are close family more so than the beloved brotherhood that applies to us all in the industry. I, and all of us, truly hope that this will be passed into law as a legal holiday, and stand behind you all of the way!!! I hope to here from you, would like to talk to people from the firehouse again soon!!!

An annual National Fireman's Day seems most appropriate. It would be one small way to honor them. Many other professions have their annual national day. Certainly there is no reason not to.

We have national day for everything else and I was shocked to learn that we do not have a National Firefighters Day. We as a nation should honor those that give up their lives to protect our lives and our property.

I was a fire fighter in college. My heart goes out to all fellow fire fighters and the families of those who lost their lives in 9/11. The act of this son to make a REAL difference in the way his father and our brothers are respected for what they do is truly humbling. For those who do so much for all of us in this great land, this seems like the very least we can do! God Bless America!

The firemen were running into an unsafe building when everyone else was running out, for their lives. These men need to be honored more and more everyday so that they are never forgotten. This seem like another great way to accomplish a never ending honor. We have Veteran's Day, for the men who give their lives for our freedom and to keep our country safe. What's one more holiday, for a very, very, good cause. I feel that this is one major way of showing our support to all of the families that lossed a loved one through such a horrific show of hate.

I can't believe it has taken so long to honor those that sacrificed everything for people they didn't know and would have probably never met. Firefighters are TRUE HEROS. Not made up in a comic book or TV show - these are real life people doing a real life - life risking - job. I thought after the 9/11 tragedy a holiday honoring firefighters was a no brainer and I am still in disbelief that it has taken so long. It just goes to show, out of sight out of mind. How often do you think about the men and women that go into a building knowing that it could come crashing down around them. How many others have left us doing that job in less tragic events? Lets remember them too because whether it be one life saved or hundreds all firefighters are heroes and deserve the respect and honor they would never ask for!!!!
