NO FLUORIDATION FOR SOUTHAMPTON AREA

The area of Southampton, Hampshire, UK, is currently under threat from water fluoridation. The local health authority seem to be determined to impose this chemical on all of us with the intention of reducing caries rates in some children.

The scientific evidence for this being an effective measure is very thin. No studys in favour that claim reduction in tooth decay for fluoridated areas have ever compared those areas with unfluoridated, comparable control groups.

There are however many studies that have shown fluoride to have a large number of adverse health effects on the human body, such as undermining the function of the thyroid gland, causing certain forms of bone cancer, leading to osteoporosis to name but a few, especially as it accumulates in the body over life-time (50% of intake remain) and cannot be removed.

What is more, there is no way of regulating individuals' intake, as people might have very different habits (e.g. drink more water, tea high in fluorides etc.) leading to very different levels of exposure.

The South-Central Strategic Health Authority and Southampton City Primary Care Trust are currently running what is called a "consultation period" in which they are promoting fluoridation, mass-mailing consultation cards on which there is no option to say that you DON'T support fluoridation.

Their  drop-in sessions are a mere 8 over a period of 18 weeks and are all held on the outskirts of town in hard-to find venues.

There will be also three "question sessions" held, for which admission is by ticket only (limited seats) and you have to give all your personal details incl. name, address, phone and email, and are forced to indicate to them in advance if you intend to ask A (!) question at the event, and what that question will be.

The intention is clear: people with awkward questions will not be admitted and questions that have not been registered in advance will not be heard.

In their "consultation brochure" they state that "not drinking fluoridated water is a matter of individual preference" and that the inividual has to concede "for the common good of the majority".

This borders on the behaviours and statements of a totalitarian regime.

Many residents don't want Fluoridation because of the pressing scientific evidence that it is a bad idea (ignored and dismissed by the authority) and not effective at reducing tooth decay.

Fluoridation would have unpredictable consequences for the health of hundred's of thousands of local residents and the environment.

Please sign this petition to stop it, especially if you live in an affected area.

The "consultation" period ends 18th December.

We, the undersigned wish to oppose fluoridation for the Southampton area.

Please respect the local residents' human rights to object mass-medication! (medication being a substance intended to cure or prevent disease)

Read the research that opponents are quoting against fluoridation and reconsider. Efficacy of Fluoridation in reducing tooth decay is not proven!

Thanks for taking the time to read our concerns.
