No Torture Lawyers on the Federal Bench--Impeach Jay Bybee!

  • by: George Work
  • recipient: Attorney General Eric Holder
Jay Bybee, Bush era head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, was the author of the first of the  four "torture memos" published by the Obama administration on Thursday, April 16, and the direct supervisor of John Yoo. He is currently sitting on the bench of the  9th  U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, having been confirmed before news of the Bush administration's torture policies broke. It is intolerable that one of the architects of this shameful episode should be in a position of power in the judiciary. He should be impeached, and others complicit in the torture should be barred from positions of power in the U. S. government.
We the undersigned applaud and thank you and President Obama for your courageous action in making public four Bush administration "torture memos" on April 16, 2009. The author of the first of the four memos, Jay Bybee, is currently serving on as a judge on the 9th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, having been confirmed before the abusive policies he helped enable were widely known. We feel strongly that one of the architects of this "dark and painful chapter in our history," as President Obama aptly described it, should not occupy a position of power and influence in the U. S. judiciary. We respectfully request that you initiate impeachment proceedings against Judge Bybee, and take measures to ensure that others complicit in the abuse of detainees do not attain positions that might lead to similar abuses in the future. Thank you for your consideration.
