No trucks on Waite Street Bridge!

No to a Highway Bridge on Waite Street!

Target:
Town of Hamden, CT
Sponsored by:
Town of Hamden proposes to replace a small and aging bridge with a 40-ton capacity highway "Jersey barrier" type bridge. The bridge is on a minor, residential road, crossing a fragile and beautiful inland wetland area with rich wildlife.

We demand that city hall immediately halt any progress on this project and convene a town hall meeting that will bring together citizens and town officials to discuss concerns and explore more environmentally sound and community friendly alternatives.

We, the undersigned writing to express our concern about plans for replacement of the Waite Street bridge over Lake Whitney.

We know that this bridge project has been in the works for the past ten years, and understand that completion of the bridge has become a
priority on the town and state level and is suddenly moving forward
quickly.

We are very surprised that a project of such magnitude with the potential
for irreversible impact on the environment, the immediate neighborhood,
and the community at large is being moved forward without sufficient
opportunity for public comment. The last public hearing on this project
was over two years ago, and in the interim the community was informed
that the project had been halted due to loss of funding.

We strongly oppose construction of a bridge of this scale over
Lake Whitney on Waite Street. The current design will open the
Waite Street area to heavy trucks, thus transforming Waite Street
into a major through street inevitably leading to increased traffic.
The Waite Street corridor along Lake Whitney is a unique and
vulnerable environment offering peaceful natural beauty which is
enjoyed by the whole community. The increased traffic and
heavy trucks will surely have irreversible negative consequences,
endangering the wildlife and the quality of life in Hamden and
neighboring communities.

We demand that city hall immediately halt any progress on this project and convene a town hall meeting. A public forum will create a platform
for citizens and town officials to come together to discuss concerns and
explore more environmentally sound and community friendly alternatives.

URGENT! URGENT! URGENT! Do not destroy the beauty of Waite Street and Whitney Lake. Everytime we pass through that area my four year old daughter looks for the "Swan Lake Princess" - don't chase her away!

Hamden is lovely place to live. I'd like to see it remain a safe neighborhood where being outdoors is a pleasant experience. I oppose increasing the bridge's capacity to 40 tons, and would prefer opening the bridge up to bikers and pedestrians. Turtle crossing, not truck crossing!

We believe this is an urgent appeal. According to our information the project's funding is about to be finalized, locking in the current design, thus practically closing the door on any alternative plans. This is yet another attempt of our town government to negate their obligations to the taxpayers of Hamden, to overlook the quality of life issues of taxpayers, and to see residents of Hamden as merely revenue generating sources for the town government's personal agendae.

We believe this is an urgent appeal. My husband and I have lived in Hamden for eight years now and have enjoyed many nature walks along this road. The beauty of this area is a big reason as to why we chose to live here in the first place. I do not know who came up with the idea that this particular road would be perfect to convert to a 40 ton bridge in this particular area but I beleive this is a GROSS mistake. You will be taking away everything that it has taken years to accomplish with the wildlife here that everyone has to come to know and love. I for one, and completely against this and will provide whatever support I can to keep this from happening.

Instead of building a Jersey barrier type bridge to accommodate more cars and heavier vehicles, consider building a bridge that can accommodate a sidewalk so pedestrians can walk through that area and enjoy the beauty of the lake.

This plan is outrageous! Mather St. and Servoss St. are in need of repairs and apparently there are not funds available for that. To expand Waite St. and redesign the bridge for heavier traffic thereby changing the nature of the lake and surrounding area will be a travesty. Obviously, it is in the interests of a special unnamed group. Whitneyville has been changed enough with CT. transit buses roaring through formerly quiet neighborhoods on streets never designed for such traffic. There are already three main streets to carry traffic from Dixwell to Whitney in this immediate area.

There are plenty of roads connecting dixwell and whitney but only one real public access to Lake Whitney. Hamden's future is tied to enhancing its natural beauty and I am not alone in thinking that Waite Street should be closed to all traffic and open to bikers and pedestrians. The history of transportation projects has shown that increasing capacity through additional lanes or wider thoroughfares only ends up increasing traffic and congestion. The wider bridge will undoubtedly lead to increased traffic thus decreasing the safety of the road for motorists, pedestrians, not to mention the local wildlife. The town should make use of the funds within the limits of the federal grant. But the focus should be to provide a safe route that takes advantage of the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
