Damage to Bute Park already before planning permission

No2 Articulated Lorry bridge/road into Bute Park

Target:

Sponsored by:
We demand the Heritage Lottery Fund reconsider their view that "a new bridge over the docks feeder to provide access into the park from North Road is as an essential element of the Bute Park Restoration Project" and that they do NOT make the road a condition for a grant for the Bute Park Restoration Project.
Bute Park is one of the largest city centre parks in the UK, providing the setting for Cardiff Castle, and listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales as grade I.

We ask the Heritage Lottery fund  to keep articulated lorries out of the park all together. The nursery can be moved and large events held elsewhere.  We believe Cardiff's heritage isn't safe with the Heritage Lottery Fund. We ask that they reconsider their position and support the public to oppose and halt the bridge and road being built through this tranquil area of the park with memorial trees.

A number of memorial trees will require CROWN management! Besides trees already felled and more to go, about 43 trees in all are to be pruned ...chopped back to let articulated lorries pass in what was a tranquil part of the park designated for memorial trees!!! 43 lollipop trees!!! This and the bridge/road and articulated lories will totally destroy the integrity of the park.  More info

emember that nowadays the key document protecting anything listed is its Conservation Plan, which relies on identifying the unique or at least special characteristics of the place, & focuses on protecting them; in this case the calm in the city, relations between open & wooded areas, the quality of the trees, etc. would be included. I would point out the following:

1) the scale & situation of the road servicing the nursery is disproportionate & inappropriate for a Grade 1 listed landscape, as it will destroy the qualities that give it those characteristics responsible for getting it that listing. Why on earth is the National Heritage Fund wanting to provide for articulated lorries to service a nursery? Councillors have assured us that they do not intend having more/commercial events, as it's not cost-effective to provide security, given the permeable borders to the park but we don't believe that.

2) it's still a concrete bridge (out of keeping, etc.).

3) although comparatively few trees are shown as being entirely removed the positioning of the roads means that MANY trees would have to have lower branched lopped off, etc. - to almost equally deleterious aesthetic effect. This is not immediately apparent on the plans, but would be the case. Also, once artic lorries are allowed in there is bound to be further damage.

4) the nature of such a big, tarmac (?) (check) road, which will stand out against the lawns, etc.

As a regular visitor to Cardiff from England (and an RHS member) I was astounded to hear about the plans to build an access road through Bute Park. I wish you every success in your fight to stop this terrible devastation.

I can't believe the plans. this council is shocking. They'd rather help destroy cardiff than listen to the needs of residents. It looks awful there now with the devastation they have caused and a road there would make things even worse!

Have been to Bute Park many times on my visits to the great city of Cardiff. Please don`t destroy this green lung with yet more roads and traffic pollution.

This is one of the worst crimes of the council! Stealing away out heritage...their dirty hands are soiled from this unthoughtful, environmentally unfriendly act.

Cardiff is my home town and I love Bute Park. It sounds as though this development will not be an improvement. How does increasing vehicular access and felling and lopping trees improve on it?

The wanton destruction of one of Cardiff's few oases would be unforgiveable. This park was given to the people of Cardiff and not to any political party to play with. Don't betray our trust.

Rodney Berman has done the same to the people residing in Rumney / Llanrumney, he is stealing our ONLY playing fields to build a new school, just so he can sell off the existing Rumney High School site (Channel views) for development. We had a recent referendum with a 93% NO to building on this public land, but BERMAN is totally disreguarding this. WE ALL NEED TO STOP THIS DICTATOR. 'RODNEY BERMAN IS NOT A WELSHMAN, FOR WELSHMEN VALUE THE GREENERY THAT IS WALES, AND NO TRUE WELSHMAN WOULD DENY THE CHILDREN OF WALES TO WALK AND FREELY PLAY UPON THE LAND OF THEIR FATHERS, Help us too, we all need to stick together.

Just because the rest of the UK has gone "road building" crazy, it does not follow that Cardiff should tear out the heart of its City, by adding to the chaos. I am only a visitor to the City, but any plans to devastate this beautiful park would be criminal. It is such an important amenity for residents and visitors. Already scores of trees have been cut down throughout the City - this Council is obviously not environmentally friendly. Shame on them.

Are they nuts? Green spaces for people to enjoy and wildlife to live in get rarer and rarer; they are shrinking out of existence because of cotton-wool-minded developers. This beautiful park is a prime example of an urban refuge where people can escape concrete for a while. It is not a luxury, it is an essential. It's not broken: don't fix it. And leave Cardiff's trees alone too. We're living in bloody stumpland.

Bute Park needs to be preserved for everyone, especially future generations of users. Children will not be safe with greater vehicle access to the park, the tranquility and beauty of the area will be damaged and the value of the park for Cardiff users and tourism will decrease. In today's climate, where environmental issues and global sustainability are key values for voter citizens - particularly for young people, the voters and world citizens of our future - it is abhorrent that the council and funding bodies dismiss these concerns and the people who will be using this supposedly public park.

There NEEDS to be a proper public consultation on this. Surely the developments should take into account the thoughts of those that actually use the park?

If Cardiff County Council's new 'Cardiff Health Challenge website seeks to promote the health and well being of its people, encouraging activities like swimming, walking, cycling, exercising in green spaces, Cardiff Council in contradiction to this and in breach of environmental conservation, sensitivity, respect or regard of public opinion shows its true face; underhand tactics and corporate greed.

There is no need for this road and bridge, as demonstrated by the events held in the park in 2008... With peak oil, and the another oil price spike looming the expected deliveries by lorry just might not happen... Building the road and bridge is "nuts"!

It seems ironic to be petitioning the a heritage fund to not provide funds in order to preserve the heritage of Cardiff. I consider myself privileged to live in a city with such fine green spaces and suspect this bridge and road is only a precursor to further development.

A park given to the people for the people.......the ideas of the cardiff council are not the views of the people of the area.

To keep OUR parks as pristine and as natural as possible means that building works should be kept to a minimum. The proposed road bridge is NOT necessary and therefore should NOT be built.

i regularly cycle through the park and enjoy the serene beauty and isolation from hurly burley of the city. was devastated to see the demolition of the trees - the rape of the park - and for what? Allowing lorries into one of Cardiff's finest amenities. SACRILEGE- Was not aware the council had planning permission yet to perpetrate such atrocities. Shame on you.

I think reducing the size of the gorgeous park is short-sighted and negligent of what residents of Cardiff want for THEIR city. As a resident of 10 years the park is THE main attraction of Cardiff for friends, family and myself. I sincerely hope that the council will back down on plans for a new road through the park.

In a climate where the emphasis is on helping get people fit, and doing more for the environment does it really make sense to spoil city centre parks for the sake of yet another road/bridge????? Surely the council should be FOR protecting the nicer parts of Cardiff!

The council are a disgrace when it comes to protecting Cardiff's Heritage. If they want to hold more events there is a jolly nice stadium just opposite. Make more use off that!
