Nominate Chris Bauer for Staten Island Pride 2009 Grand Marshal

Some of Chris Bauer's accomplishments:

  • In 1990 he was appointed to Mayor Dinkins' Gay and Lesbian Police Council. We were tasked to meet every six weeks and worked with the Chief of Department and then the Police Commissioner to improve relations between the lgbt community and the NYPD. Among other things he helped to develop the lesson plan on the lgbt community in the Police Academy curriculum;
  • From 1993 - 1994 he was the president of Lambda Asociates of Staten Island and basically extended the life of the organization by 8 years, since the then board was ready to shut it down in 1992;
  • Chris wrote the column Out and About in the Lambda newsletter in the late 90's;
  • Chris helped organize the Alice Austen - Gertrude Tate Juried Photography contest;
  • Chris helped organize the following demonstrations:

    • the 5-Boro Demonstration to Protest and Document Anti-Lesbian/Gay Violence in March 1991;
    • the protest against Cardinal O'Connor at the Staten Island St. Patrick's Parade in 1993 with Brendan Fay;
    • the March through Rossville in July 1993 to protest the beating of Michael Zappalorti ;
    • the October 1994 protest at the 10k run against Guy Molinari because of his homophobic remarks against Attorney General candidate Karen Burstein;
    • the February 1995 protest against Dennis Vacco at the Staten Island Republican Lincoln Day Dinner;
    • the March 2000 protest against the homophobic billboard in St. George.

  • In politics:

    • Chris spoke out in favor of the Children of the Rainbow curriculum in a June 1992 at a Staten Island school board meeting;
    • in November 1992 he spoke out again in favor of the Children of the Rainbow curriculum at a school board meeting that was on the verge of seeming like a lynch mob
    • out of that experience he became one of the founders of the group the Staten Island Alliance for Responsible Education (SIARE) that had as its goal the  election of progressive people to the Staten Island School Board (District 31);
    • Chris worked in the 1993 campaign and helped elect 3 SIARE members to the school board;
    • in 1996 and again in 1999 he ran as an openly gay candidate for school board on the SIARE ticket. 
    • As an out gay man, he was honored by the Staten Island Democratic Party at their annual Ball in 1997;



for many years he did the annual Empire State Pride agenda lobbying day in Albany for lgbt rights, met with local politicians, and saw to it that it got mentioned in the Advance;




    • Chris organized candidate forums with Lambda;
    • He was one of the co-founders (along with you and Rosemary and Marianne) of Staten Island Stonewall;

  • in the fight against H.I.V./AIDS:

    • Chris helped with the formulation of and became the first director in 1995 of the lgbt prevention education program (later known as EAGLE) of the Staten Island AIDS Task Force;
    • Chris trained over 100 volunteer peer workers in education and outreach;



    • Chris started the EAGLE Update, a monthly newsletter for the EAGLE program, which was published from 1996 through 2000;
    • Chris was the lead developer of an anti-homophobia curriculum and taught the course at different agencies, schools, organizations, and even the NYPD;
    • one summer Chris did an anti-homophobia at each shift of each police precinct on Staten Island, and thereafter did the presentation for each incoming class of NYPD rookies on Staten Island;
    • He did the ant-homophobia curriculum with continuing education for NYC school teachers;

I have known Chris since we were in graduate school together at Princeton University, and I have always been impressed by his commitment to justice and equal rights.
