Nuclear Power is not the Answer

Nuclear Free Alberta

Target:

Sponsored by:
Please help us support sustainable energy options and keep Alberta Nuclear free!

Energy Alberta Corporation, an upstart nuclear company, has submitted a
license application to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to build two
2,000 MW ACR1000 CANDU reactors in Alberta. The ACR-1000 is a 3rd generation nuclear plant design that can produce up to 1200MWe each (the proposed plant would be twinned for approx 2400MWe total output). Although the design draws on original CANDU technology, the ACR-1000 larger than any plant built to date.

EAC's business plan states that they want to bring up to 13 nuclear power plants to Alberta, the primary purpose being to generate power to extract oil from the Alberta tar sands. The company may also sell nuclear energy to the Alberta grid and export it to the USA.

Municipal councils in Peace River, Whitecourt, and Woodlands County have all submitted letter of support for nuclear power plants in their communities. There has been no open debate on the issue.

Please help us send our Federal elected officials a clear message, "Nuclear is not a solution for greenhouse gases. Nuclear is not clean, green, safe or economical! We want to keep Alberta nuclear free!"

We, and future generations, thank you for your support!

We, the undersigned hereby declare that we are opposed to all new nuclear power plant development in Alberta and Canada.

Please help us support sustainable energy options and keep Alberta Nuclear free!

Doesn't Alberta have enough problems already without adding nuclear power to the mix?

I grew up in Peace River. I've done a lot of personal research into nuclear power and I can't seem to find a limit on the number of reasons that it would be a horrible route to go in Alberta.

Humanity is now on the verge or reaping the consequences of our own arrogance. Many will continue to deny that this is happening until the worst of this consequence becomes manifest. We have played with nuclear power before with this sense of confidence, only to have it fail.

Nuclear energy is destructive to all life, and bad for our home-Earth. We have better options we should be exploring rather than listening to the corporate companys that have a financial interest in promoting such noise as nuclear toxic, destructive , insaine- energy!

Alberta's Boreal Forests are already being damaged by current and planned porojects for energy and gas industries. The areas affected by both the oilsands and nuclear plant facilities are some of the most beautiful forested areas within this province, and are natural habitats to much of the wildlife in northern Alberta. We must see that the damage that will be done from the development and continued use of these facilities will irreperably damage the environment, animals, and lives of all those in the immediate and surrounding areas. We must do what we can to preserve this provinces resources and seek alternatives to ensure that this province can be as proud of its beauty, conservation, and sustanability for many years and future generations.

Nuclear produced energy might be clean for the air and for decresing carbon but pollution on the earth is still serious. Anything that doesn't biodegrade for 25, 0000 is not green to me.

Nuclear Wasted? -NO THANKS- The Nuclear Industry is too secretive to be trusted. Did you know that even the United Nations cannot release the results of any health studies without approval from the International Nuclear Regulators Association. If nuclear is a safe option why are they hiding behind governments? Human error is responsible for over 75% of all nuclear industry incidents. I have yet to meet a human being who has never made a mistake. %u201CSince Adam and Eve ate the apple, man has never refrained from any folly of which he was capable.%u201D Quote from Bertrand Russell

It is important for us to keep the planet as green as possible. Further technology, if constructed properly to induce a better environment, is fine; however, nuclear plants just don't seem to be that environmentally friendly to me. Statistically, they are a source of unnecessary radiation. Therefore, I petition against it.

I value the health of this planet. I believe that myself, as well as future generations, have a right to live in clean uncontaminated surroundings. Nuclear power is merely a bandaid solution to our energy needs and not a real answer!

I Want to keep Alberta Nuclear free, Because there are so many other sources for clean energy; Wind power, look at Dawson Creek, B.C. just as windy as Grande Prairie where are our wind mills?? Solar Farms.... we recieve 2,109 hours of sunlight annually in Peace Region and almost 16-17 hrs p/day in the early summer...I believe if it is in the ground, Nature put it there because it is to unstable for the world. lets play what if... What if a solar panel broke?? replace it, what if a wind mill crashed?? stand a new one, what if a nuclear plant melts down??? Ummm wait oh what couple hundred years for the land to be usable again and what about water shed of the Peace River... sorry for the rambling it just makes me made that People can actually think that Nuclear is the way to go... we Canadians are smarter than that

Nucular power is not a bad thing if it was only going to effect us,but it could before generations. The power could be made other ways, for example Grimshaw has a high rate of wind why not use windmills???

We have already been told we are going to be facing a water shortage in this country and we already complain that the oil company are using to much water also Nuclear is not clean it comes with it's own problems, there is other things out there, we don't need to go Nuclear. You just have to look at the places that have it and what the people that live around them have for health problems and you know it not a safe option. I don't think we need to make this a choice that our kids will have to live with and deal with later on.

Creating vast amounts of energy is only going to leave the 'conservation mind set' behind. The consumer for all of this energy will more than likely not be Albertan, or even Canadian. The storage of the nuclear waste has not been a time-proven science. If nuclear power were so safe, why aren't the proposed sites for nuclear plants closer to where the energy drains are? Because the 'safety' of the plants cannot be convinced to the many millions of people in larger centers. AEUB is taking us rural albertans for back-woods hicks, who will believe whatever made up statistics they feed us. From an economical stance, why not fund a research center out here to promote growth? There is another way. There is a better way. Why not, with the proposed budget for a nuclear plant, give each rural alberta home new, energy-efficient, appliances? Or fund solar panels and hot-water heating for residents? With all of the trees that have been cut down for farming, there is also more wind power potential... There are countless ways to produce energy that wouldn't take out the country's most beautiful, lucrative province, should something go wrong.

The big issue that is never completely addressed is what happens to the waste? With weather patterns more volatile than ever, large natural disasters can occur at any location on the planet; there is no safe place to store this waste. Here in Fort Nelson the last thing I ever expected to experience was an earthquake, yet in the 1980's we felt two that originated, I believe, in the Northwest Territories; the first was strong enough to swing our trailer back and forth like a cradle for several minutes, and the whole street heaved like a rolling ocean wave. Any storage facility is at risk. In addition to storage, there is the issue of transporting waste from point A to point B, not to mention the ever-present danger of accident or leakage at the plant itself, all events that could contaminate the whole of western Canada. I think we have not spent nearly enough time/energy/money exploring alternative methods of generating power. Kinetic energy, for example, looks quite promising, yet the people trying to introduce it are struggling for lack of funds and interest from communities and government. Our thoughts and plans are too much inside the box of already-existing technology; we are not looking outward enough at totally new and innovative solutions.

If a firm wants to build a nucluear plant, make them pay the full cost! DO NOT USE MY tax dollars to subsidize nuclear energy. If the gov wants to spend tax dollars on this hold a pebecite.

Neuclear plant in Canada, you've got to be kidding! We spend thousands of dollars to bring Chernobyl children here, to Barrhead each year to give them a chance to breath clean fresh air, because their country was destroyed by a neuclear melt down! The air is poision! Neclear power in Alberta, we still have to clean up from all the pollution we are putting into the air as it is, but it's still a beautiful country. Neclear Power in Alberta? No, Not here, not anywhere!
