Conscientious Consumer Pledge

Target:
Ohioans who want to end global poverty with their everyday shopping
This petition asks citizens/consumers to go on the record in support of the Fair Trade movement and to state their intent to be more conscientious about their shopping habits. Sign the pledge!

Conscientious Consumer Pledge

I pledge to stop engaging in zombie-like consumerism that is more reflexive than reflective.

I pledge to minimize harm with my purchasing practices.

I pledge to ask myself these qualifying questions before committing to a retail exchange:

How did the production and sale of this item harm or help my local community?

How did the production and sale of this item harm or help my global community?

I pledge to ask retailers how, where, and with what raw materials their products were made.

I pledge to see VALUE in a cleaner environment, universal human rights, and citizen-directed community development.

I pledge to tally the COSTS associated with blind hyper-consumerism.

I pledge to make my perspective known through the power of the purse.

I pledge to request fair trade and sustainable products where none exist.
I pledge to support those those businesses that already sell fair trade and sustainable products.

I have been aiming to support the fair trade movement for years. Having traveled in countries in the Global South I've seen firsthand how lives can be greatly improved if the Global NOrth pays a price fair price for coffee, tea, bananas, sugar, etc. - a price that takes into account labor standards, environmental standards, etc.

I also see the importance of being a conscientious consumer and the impact it has on our community and state economies. I support their efforts to make others more aware.

As a member of Simply Living, and a Board member of our local Food Co-op, I know that we can all do our part to improve the environment and the livelihood of people and families all over the world who deserve a fair price for the goods and services they trade. Shop Co-op and the Global Gallery stores in Columbus and make sure your faith communities serve fair trade coffee.

I don't want or buy what I don't need. I don't watch commercial television because I think the ads are degrading to the human spirit.

The typical American consumerist lifestyle is unsustainable. The earth's systems don't work on ever-expanding consumer bases--there is a finite limit to resources and our disposable goods for "convenience" and "cleanliness" are destroying the global ecosystem's ability to support life. Everyone needs to be more conscious of the product lifecycle when they are making purchases and keep in mind the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Quality of life isn't determined by possession of the hottest new item or by the square footage of our homes. By foregoing some of the baggage that our culture identifies with "success," we can help improve the quality of life of others in our local communities and around the world.

The desire to acquire more and more things drives us to live without giving thought to our impact on the world's resources. Council Fellows - good initiative!

Because I really believe that "no man is an island" (I'd update it to "no person") and what we do affects others, which in turn affects our lives and environment.

Our future on this planet is determined by the decisions we make every day. We should strive to make our consuption habits and the decisions on what we buy to help protect our planet and promote an end to poverty and the exploitation of the poor.

Being a conscientious consumer is an awesome and empowering way to live Life consciously! The group that came up with this while being surrounded by a humanity-depriving, environment-destroying, consumerism-driven culture (and government) is truly inspiring! Way to go!

This movement is powerful because it harnesses consumer power and has potential to make a difference to ensure that a whole range of goals are achieved: protecting human rights and universal workers rights, ensuring that developing communities can lift themselves from poverty and build schools and invest in infrastructure, and ending forced immigration by individuals who feel they have no other choice. I support these students' work toward these goals!
