Nourishing Our Children Campaign

Nourishing Our Children Campaign

Target:
Anne Arundel County Schools
Sponsored by:

As breakfast is the foundation for a healthy diet and an essential component to achieving peak performance academically, physically and behaviorally, I support the improvement in the nutritional quality of the school breakfast program in Anne Arundel County. Additionally, I encourage the schools to implement higher nutritional standards for all food served through the integration of nutritionally dense, fresh, whole foods, free from trans fat/partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial ingredients and "empty calories".

It would be wonderful if all the food choices presented to children were nourishing and beneficial to their wellbeing and development. I ask "Why not"?

The schools supplying fresh, whole foods will serve as a foundation for a life long practice of healthy eating. I completely support this measure!

I am a teacher and I see first hand the effects of a poor diet on the way that students learn. The school lunches usually contain too much sugar and food prepared with hydrogenated oils. The school has a responsibility to teach children what healthy food looks like and tastes like. Many children who are eating these unhealthy lunches and breakfasts have no energy and are not able to focus on the challenging work they must do. If changes in the school food programs are to be made the parents need to speak up because it is the parents who can demand that change happen.

This is a no-brainer, and even will probably *save* the County money in the long run, as kids stay healthier, display fewer behavioral problems, and are more successful in school.

Our kids deserve the very best! As we learn the lifelong detrimental effects of eating processed foods, we should make sure we teach our children from the start to enjoy fresh and whole foods. Our schools are a good place to start. Thank you.
