Protest Obama "Curious George" T-Shirt

We were outraged to hear the news about the tavern owner in Georgia selling T-shirts showing Curious George with the words "Obama in '08." This is a crucial year in the history of America and is hard to believe some people are still using offensive images depicting the old Jim Crow stereotypes.

Mike Norman, the owner of Mulligan's a tavern in Marietta, GA insists the T-shirts are not meant to be racist, describes them as "cute" and has gone as far as saying Obama and the character "look so much alike." We think he's just being disingenuous.

Sadly, this isn't the first time the image of Curious George has been misused in the context of the presidential race. Right-wing talk radio host Rush Limbaugh apologized on air for laughing at a caller's comment that her daughter thought Obama resembled the cartoon character.

It's time to put an end to this. If not stopped, offensive and demeaning images can only open the doors to violence and abuses. Senator Obama is proposing a message of hope. Don't let hateful messages get in the way of positive change. Sign this petition urging the Curious George publishers and producers to take action to stop extremists like Mike Norman from using this beloved children's character as part of their destructive speech.

I was outraged to hear the news about Mike Norman, the tavern owner in Georgia who's been selling T-shirts showing Curious George peeling a banana with the words "Obama in '08." This is a crucial year in the history of America and is hard to believe some people are still using offensive images depicting the old Jim Crow stereotypes.

Sadly, this isn't the first time the image of Curious George has been misused in the context of the presidential race. Right-wing talk radio host Rush Limbaugh apologized on air for laughing at a caller's comment that her daughter thought Obama resembled the cartoon character.

If not stopped, offensive and demeaning images can only open the doors to violence and abuses.  Senator Obama is proposing a message of hope; we can't let hateful messages get in the way of positive change.

I appreciate your recent statements saying you find the T-shirt offensive and out of keeping with the values Curious George represents. Now we urge you to pursue immediate legal action to ensure Mike Norman can't continue to misuse the image of this beloved character to propagate his hateful speech.

Thank you for speaking out.
