Ontario Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act

Ontario Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act

Target:
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty
Sponsored by:
There are cheaper alternatives to nuclear energy, and they also are much better for the environment.

Ontario coal plants will be phased out within a decade, and the current nuclear plants will also be out of commission.  It is an exciting time to be in as we have a chance to implement better ways of generating electricity.

The plan on this website http://www.ontariosgreenfuture.ca/index.php has been compiled with the input of many scientists and researchers from all levels of government and the private sector.

Nuclear energy is highly subsidized, and the companies deliberately low-ball estimated costs when presenting them to the government.  This Act aims to ensure that taxpayers will not have to foot the bill when these projects go over.  Nuclear companies will then have to present their true costs, and the government will have no choice but to acknowledge that there are more cost-effective ways to generate electricity.

Whereas the Government of Ontario is planning to spend upwards of $26.5 billion on new nuclear generating stations and;

Whereas every nuclear construction and retrofit project undertaken in Ontario in the past 20 years has resulted in massive cost overruns; and
Whereas Ontario%u2019s nuclear generating units have routinely performed below expectations, requiring extensive repairs due to premature aging and unexpected breakdowns and producing energy at levels well below those promised by builders; and

Whereas the people of Ontario have been left with a massive $20 billion public debt from past nuclear cost overruns and have been subject to the harmful effects of an increase in the use of dirty coal power to compensate for poor nuclear performance,

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to pass a Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act requiring that all contracts for new nuclear construction or retrofits include a strict prohibition on passing on capital cost overruns to taxpayers or ratepayers and include significant financial penalties for failing to have units ready on time. We understand that such conditions are already mandatory in contracts for renewable and natural gas-fired generating projects and believe that it is only fair and reasonable that nuclear projects be subject to the same conditions.

I think the Ontario Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act is one of the most sensible ideas I've seen in a long time. I completely agree with it. Let's level the energy playing field by making all costs more transparent.

If nuclear is the way to go, which to my mind is debatable, and the gov't should facilatate that debate, then a the very least let us ensure stict cost over run controls!! Steve Rush

Also, Nuclear Industries should be pay their own private insurance costs instead of being given "guarantees" from government in the event of an accident or mishap of any kind. All other industries need to do so.

Enough is enough. Let's stop catering the nuclear lobby with public money and guarantees.

Nuclear waste will be with us for thousands of years because the industry has no safe solution for disposing of the waste. LEAVE THAT 'RESOURCE" IN THE GROUND!

Nuclear is not the answer until health risks caused by radiation are addessed. How many people suffer and possibly die of cancer in Kingston, in Ontario, in Canada every year. And we want to increase the amount of non-disposal nuclear waste. Lets conserve. Lets use greener alternative energy.

Enough of overexpenditures; balooning costs; medical and ecological hazards, nuclear is not the answer there are greener alternatives.
